AANR-NW at Northwest Folklife

This weekend AANR-NW Is at Northwest Folklife.  Our goal is to meet as many of the quarter of a million visitors to Northwest Folklife as we can.  We believe that if people meet a nudist they will be less likely to allow laws that will outlaw nudism.  While we’re doing this, we can tell people about the nine beautiful parks in the Northwest and our six friendly travel clubs.  So, if you’re in Seattle Center this Memorial Day Weekend, stop by our booth and say hello.  We’re between the fountain and Key Arena.

        AANR-NW Beach Celebration Cleanups

AANR-NW Government Affairs Team celebrates a 15 year partnership with the Oregon State Parks Department.  Adoptions include Rooster Rock State Park through the Oregon Adopt-A-Park program.  Sauvie Island-Collins Beach and Rooster Rock State Park adoptions are also contracted through the SOLV adoption program.  Our partnerships with officials have been successful because of dues paying AANR members and dedicated volunteers who complete the required four beach cleanups every summer.  AANR-NW volunteers have completed over 50 beach cleanups.  Now that is something to celebrate!

The Willamettans Family Nudist resort www.willamettans.com is gifting all registered beach volunteers with a two-day pass to their resort in Marcola, Oregon.  You must register day of event to receive this generous gift.

AANR membership is not required to participate.  All volunteers welcome and appreciated.  Just show up with water in a refillable container, shoes, gloves, hat, lots of sunscreen and a big smile!  Parking fees are waived for volunteers at Rooster Rock.  We are working to get parking passes for volunteers at Collins Beach.   Do not leave any valuables in your car.

AANR-NW will be supplying the ever popular AANR dogs (hot dogs) at beach cleanups again this year.

July 8-Rooster Rock State Park hosted by Mike Parker AANR-NW Public Lands starting at 10 am and ending at 1 pm.  Volunteers will be rewarded with the ever popular AANR dog (hot dog) barbecue and potluck.  AANR-NW will supply the hot dogs, buns, condiments and napkins.  Contact publiclands@aanr-nw.org  for further details

July 9-Sauvie Island-Collins Beach hosted by Mike Parker starting at 1 pm.  We are working to acquire parking passes from SOLV for the cleanup.  Cleanup efforts will concentrate on the gravel road parking area and litter sweep of the beach.  Clothes are required in the parking area.   A hot dog barbecue and potluck on the beach will start at 3:30 pm.  Contact publiclands@aanr-nw.org  for more detailed information.

August 26-Rooster Rock State Park hosted by AANR-NW Government Affairs Chair (GAT) Shirley Gauthier.  We meet at the East end of the parking area by the nude beach entrance.  A group photo at 9 am to be submitted to the Bulletin so don’t show up late! Photo participants must sign an AANR photo release.  AANR Dog barbecue at noon.  Contact sherbog@msn.com for more details or information.

August 26-Mountaindale Sun Resort beach volunteer appreciation dinner starting at 6 pm.  Mountaindale is providing a free dinner and free day pass for all volunteers.  Those that choose to spend the night will be charged a small overnight site fee.  Huge thanks to Mountaindale Sun Resort!

August 27-Sauvie Island-Collins Beach starting at 9 am.  Our efforts will concentrate on the gravel road parking area.  Clothes are required in the parking area.  An AANR Dog barbecue on the beach following the cleanup.  Group photo once we hit the beach!  Contact sherbog@msn.com for further information or details.

Stay tuned-Raffle prizes are starting to come in from resorts and members who can’t participate.  If you can’t participate and want to contribute it’s easy.  Simply contact Shirley Gauthier at sherog@msn.com

            Windy Willies

The Willamettans club was hit by a huge wind storm April 7th.  This wind storm woke up residents at 4:30 am with a large boom that was the first tree to fall; it caused considerable damage to two members’ sites, with one member’s truck totaled.  The wind was howling and large tree limbs were falling.  At 5:00 am, an even larger boom occurred when a tree hit the out buildings next to The Fireside which contain the laundromat, showers, restrooms, and storage area.  When the insurance agent showed up a few days later and assessed the damage, he said one word, “Catastrophic!” Everyone was so lucky that no one was hurt.

The Willamettans have just two clean up weekends during the year.  The first one was April 15.  It was a great turn out, showing what great members the Willies have and even attracting non-members who showed up to help.  They got a lot done but it will take much longer to get the buildings back in shape.

May 20-21 is the next clean up weekend.  The Willies are asking for our help and are hoping to see a fantastic turn out.  You will be able to get breakfast, the Snack Shack will be open at lunch, and dinner is available on Saturday evening.  Volunteers eat for free at lunch.  Saturday evening entertainment will be “The Cowboy Cadillac Band”.

The Willies really need our help to get ready for our regional convention in July.

Sun Meadow Resort Community Gathers to Celebrate Easter

             by Margie Cantlon

The 15th annual Easter celebration at Sun Meadow resort was a joyful gathering of the Sun Meadow community, led by Margie Cantlon and Terri Capshaw.  Those gathered shared songs and inspirational messages, accompanied by AANR-NW President Dave Smith on guitar and autoharp, and Kathy Smith, AANR Member Trustee for the Northwest Region, on piano.

Messages of grace resonated, and it was especially poignant for the nudist community.  Grace means letting go of what doesn’t matter and focusing on what does, and when nudists shed their clothes, status falls away, and the community gets down to what is important: how we serve one another and make each other’s lives more meaningful.   It takes grace for different people to live together, and the nudist community is a place where all people can find acceptance.

Guests visiting Sun Meadow resort for the first time often remark that what stands out for them is the sense of community they feel.  This is what most people at nudist communities experience.  It takes community to make it work.  Political leaning, sexual preference, religious affiliation, profession, etc. become immaterial in the nudist environment.

Kathy Smith tells of her first nudist experience at Kaniksu Ranch, where she had a tour, and then took off her clothes.  The breeze on her skin and the friendly people at the pool made her feel so comfortable and welcome that she has been an active member of the nudist community ever since that day.  This is not an unusual experience.

The bottom line is that nudists are nice people, and it takes nice people to build a meaningful community.

Ranch as our base camp.  We have been running a nude hiking Meetup group for the past couple of years (http://www.meetup.com/Siskiyou-Hiking-Bares/), described in N magazine issue 35.2.  An article about the Nude European Walking Tour 2016, which this event is modeled on is reviewed in a recent issue of the AANR Bulletin.

We are a GO for this meet up! I have arranged with Squaw Mt. Ranch just east of Estacada, OR to host this meetup by providing a place for us to camp. They have also agreed to provide food service of supper and possibly breakfast as well. Camping and food, including grounds use for $30- $35 per day, with the exact amount determined after we have a final head count. I think this is a great deal. The lodge will also be available for our group, with a few rooms available for sleeping, some floor space and kitchen facilities.
The Hiking Tour will consist of five day hikes, using Squaw Mountain Ranch Nude Resort as our base of the tour.  This hiking tour is patterned after the Nude European Walking Tour which takes place each summer in Germany or Austria.
I still have details to work out with Squaw Ranch about meals, but we are definitely going to do this!  There are some great hikes in the area, as well as a hike in to Bagby Hot Springs on one of the days.  This will be a bucket list vacation you will want to do at least once.  On the NEWT in Austria, most of the participants were returning from previous years, the experience is that great.
I will need to hear from participants as soon as possible.  I’m running this event mostly at cost, with $10.00 of the fees going to support the meetup site.  All the rest of the fees are for food and camping / lodging at Squaw Ranch.  Folks can bring food for lunches and keep it in the lodge refrigerator, or arrange for box lunches made by Squaw Ranch.  This would be additional cost, but wouldn’t amount to much.  Total for the week, from Sun. evening to Sat. morning should be no more than $205.00.  To hold a spot on the list of participants, I will need to get a payment via check or paypal for $100.00.  I will accept payment until our roster of 30 participants is full or up to June 25th.   Refunds will be offered up to June 25th.  Those wishing to join the tour after June 25th will be considered on a space available basis and will be up to Squaw Mt. Ranch.  Contact me through the meetup site (you will need to join the site) and we will communicate via email for payment arrangements.  The balance of $105.00 will be due on site the day of arrival.
If you are coming from another state by plane and need space in the lodge, let me know ahead of time so we can reserve your space.   Squaw Mt. Ranch has generously offered the use of the lodge, which is included in the per day fee paid by participants.  There are three bedrooms in the lodge, one with 1 double bed and 2 with 2 double beds.  First come, first served on reserving space in the lodge. Estacada is only about an hour from Portland, maybe hour and a half from PDX, so it is possible to fly out to Portland and rent a car to the event.   I would encourage networking to share rides and cost.
I am very excited about this first annual Hiking Oregon Naturally Annual Tour and hope this is the start of many more annual tours.

Jason Farnham Piano Concert April 22 at Sun Meadow

This concert will be a fun one. Jason Farnham is not only an accomplished professional touring pianist, but he’s also a lot of fun! Jason Farnham of San Francisco Bay, CA is truly the “International Entertainer of Contemporary Piano Music”. Fans have affectionately dubbed him “Schroeder” from Peanuts because of his toy piano, his witty Victor Borge-style piano comedy antics and the clever way he interacts with the audience. The newest addition to his piano show has become his staple track: Fur Elise with a techno-rock beat: “Fur Crying Out Loud Elise, Let’s Dance!” And Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca has now become “Rondo Alla Techno”. Fans of Mannheim Steamroller and rich piano instrumentals will find much to love here. Jason Farnham is a first-class entertainer, and his show is sure to leave the audience smiling. Here are a few photos to give an idea of what to expect: Kathy Parsons of MainlyPiano.com says, “Think Schroeder from Peanuts meets George Winston meets Victor Borge meets a guy who makes techno remixes out of classical tunes.

Deadlines for the AANR-NW Honor Awards Extended to May 1st.

The AANR-NW Board has voted unanimously to change the deadline for the Man/Woman of the Year and the Hall of Fame Awards to May 1st. This change has been made retroactively, so that it takes effect immediately, even though the forms on the AANR-NW website have not yet been changed.  So please go to https://aanr-nw.org/for-members-only/awards/hall-of-fame/  and  https://aanr-nw.org/for-members-only/awards/man-and-woman-of-the-year/. to nominate those volunteers that have gone beyond the norm during the past year.  But do it now, there is still less than a month to get the forms completed.  The Man of the Year and Woman of the Year have also been renamed Member of the Year, with up to two awards each year.

                Reasons to Sleep Nude

As nudists, we all know that it feels good to sleep nude.  But there are other advantages to sleeping in the buff according to an article last September on Forbes.com, 4 Reasons Sleeping Naked Makes You Healthier And Wealthier

                1. You Sleep Better Naked
According to the University of Amsterdam, by lowering your skin temperature, your sleep is of much better quality.  This type of sleep removes toxic proteins from the brain and improves your thought processes.
                2. Sleeping Naked Reduces Stress
This better quality sleep, as described by the above study, reduces cortisol levels which will reduce your stress levels, thus, improving your immune system and decreasing your risk of heart disease, depression and obesity.
                3. Sleeping Naked Is Healthier
US National Institutes of Health has found that by keeping cool by sleeping in the buff, your body speeds its metabolism not only while asleep, but throughout the day.  Sleeping nude also improves blood circulation which increases growth hormone and melatonin.
                4. Sleeping Naked Builds Confidence
Sleeping naked helps build self-confidence, which The University of Melbourne found leads to higher wages and better jobs.

Other articles mention other advantages. 10 Benefits of Sleeping Naked You Probably Didn’t Know lists some of them.

                1. It is easier
You don’t have to buy or wash pajamas.
                2. It forces you to be ready to go out more often.
You don’t put on your pajamas when you come home from work, so you are more likely to go out in the evenings.  Therefore it is easier to stay active.
                3. Skin-on-skin contact is the best
Sleeping naked means it is more likely that you will have skin-on-skin contact which can lead to a more active sex life.  This releases a lot of oxytocin which helps you feel good about your partner.
                4. It can help your skin
It gives all of the parts of your body a chance to air out and breathe, which lowers the risk of skin diseases.
                5. It can keep your sex organs happier
For men, it helps keep your sperm healthy.  For women, it can help prevent yeast infections.

                  AANR-NW Honor Awards

AANR-NW is a volunteer organization.  There are two honors that can be bestowed on these volunteers.  The deadlines for submitting nominations for these honor awards is March 15.  That is next week. In just five days.  Please put on your thinking cap and thnk about who deserves these awards.

The Hall of Fame Award is the highest honor the region can award a member. It is based on service of a magnitude above average to AANR, AANR Northwest and nudism. It is not intended to recognize club service unless such service was of direct benefit to AANR and AANR Northwest. Nominees must have ten years continuous membership in AANR, with a minimum of five years in AANR Northwest.   To nominate someone, see https://aanr-nw.org/for-members-only/awards/hall-of-fame/” target=”_blank” style=”color: #336699;font-weight: normal;text-decoration: underline;”>https://aanr-nw.org/for-members-only/awards/hall-of-fame/

The Man and Woman of the Year Awards are given to a man and to a woman for their contribution in promoting and/or furthering nudism at the regional level during the previous calendar year. Recipients will be presented with plaques at the AANR Northwest convention. Nominees must be AANR Northwest members but need not be members of the club that nominates them.
