How the Musicians View You

During the recent “Skin to the Wind” Festival at Sun Meadow, I sat down with the musicians to find out how they viewed us, the nudists in their audience.

The first of the artists was David G. Smith.  It was his first time visiting a nudist resort or performing at one.  He had not yet performed.  He seemed perfectly comfortable as a nudist.  He attributed it to work he had done in the medical community.  He often gives back and plays for Seniors.  He said everyone was super friendly and it was like an adventure.  He said it “Feels like Home”.  Giving back is important to him.

The other artist that I spoke with was James Lee Stanley.    He has frequently played at Sun Meadow, so he is definitely not a nudist newbie. He also was comfortable with nudism.   When asked what was different about playing at Sun Meadow, his answer was that he wasn’t supposed to be political.  During concerts, he tries to encourage people to think.  He knows it is important for his audience to like him.

I expected to find some differences in nudist audiences.  You don’t already find what you expect.

The following is a survey about what we would like to see in Oregon State Parks.  Let’s make our voices heard.  Maybe we can get more places to be nude.  This survey was forwarded by our Government Affairs Team Chair, Shirley Gauthier.

          AANR-NW Convention

This year’s convention is at the Willamettans, near Eugene, Oregon, on July 21-23.  There will be live music and dancing on Friday and Saturday. We plan on rolling out the red carpet with lots of activities, including a USA Pickleball Association pickleball tournament!  There will also be horseshoes, bocce ball, disc golf, swimming, tie dye, and other games and activities.  AANR-NW meeting times will be announced.  It’s a great time to come visit the Willies if you have never been here before.  Rest-ur-Rump, Full Moon Saloon, Snack Shack and Fireside will be open. The Pool will be inviting.  A convention registration form was in the May issue of the NudeScene.  Registration for the convention and for the pickleball tournament, plus more information, is also available on the Willamettans website, willamettans.wildapricot.org, or by contacting the office at 541-933-2809.

                    Author in our Midst

Mike Capshaw, one of the owners of Sun Meadow Family Nudist Resort, is a published author.  Mike’s Mind Bending Coloring Book, which can be purchased on Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/Mikes-Mind-Bending-Coloring-Book/dp/1544875215 is his first volume. Mike is currently working on volume 2 and we will let you know when it becomes available.  It’s considered an adult coloring book although it’s appropriate for all ages; however, the intricate design may be difficult for younger  children.  Adult coloring has become a very popular pastime over the last few years.  It is a way to relax and shows no sign of losing popularity.  Mike is sharing one of his creations with us.  So get out your crayons, pencils or markers and have some fun.  Or get your friends together to celebrate National Coloring Day on August 2.  Let us know if you want Mike to share more of his creations.

Reminder — AANR-NW July Rooster Rock/Sauvie Island Beach Celebration Clean-ups on July 8 and 9

AANR-NW celebrates a 15 year partnership with the Oregon State Parks Department as beach adopters for the two legal nude beaches in Oregon as well as Rooster Rock State Park itself.  As such, two beach litter clean-ups are scheduled each year to fulfill the agreement.  For a few years, the water was extremely high for the first one, to the point that even the trails were under water.  We hope the water is down some more by the weekend.  The weather for both Saturday and Sunday is expected to be in the mid to upper 80’s with lows around 60.

The Willamettans Family Nudist resort, www.willamettans.com, is gifting all registered beach volunteers with a two-day pass to their resort in Marcola, Oregon.  You must register day of event to receive this generous gift.  AANR-NW is also providing hot dogs and other snacks.  All volunteers are also entered into a drawing for a a nude watercolor by Henry Yuen.  AANR membership is not required to participate.  All volunteers are welcome and appreciated.  Stay afterward and enjoy the nude beach.  See below for more info!

Saturday, July 8 at 10:00 a.m. at Rooster Rock State Park.  This is a clothing optional event, if you are cleaning in the nude area. It is highly suggested that you wear shoes and sun screen. Hats are also recommended if it is very bright.  Bring work gloves if you have them.  All tools and clean-up bags will be furnished.  We will be working with the Rooster Rock park staff. The Park Ranger Supervisor will have a list of projects that includes light to heavy work.

Volunteers do not have to pay the day use fee.  Tell the person in the registration booth that you are there for the clean-up. When registering, you will receive a card to put in your window.  Meet at the east end of the parking lot near the restrooms.   This should not last longer than around three hours, and will be followed by a hot dog barbeque.  AANR-NW will provide cold water, sugar free lemonade, hot dogs, buns and trimmings and some other snacks.   Please do not  leave any items visible in your car. The only restrooms accessible from the nude beach are located near the parking area.   On-line sign-up is available at: http://solveoregon.org/get-involved/events/rooster-rock-beach-cleanup-and-more  The Columbia Gorge Express bus ($5 round trip) goes from the Gateway Transit Center to Rooster Rock and on to Multnomah Falls,.  Details at:  http://columbiagorgeexpress.com/

Sunday, July 9 – Sauvie Island-Collins Beach – clean-up at 1:00 p.m. – A parking pass is usually required and can be purchased at the store or deli after crossing the bridge to the island.  SOLVE was able to get us some free day-of-event passes for those that volunteer. Restrooms are close and located in the parking area. We will concentrate our efforts on the gravel road parking area and litter sweeps of the beach area. Meet on the beach near the third beach opening.   Those cleaning the parking area must remain clothed.  A hot dog barbeque and potluck will be held at around 3:30 p.m.  Contact publiclands@aanr-nw.org  for further details on these events and on how to get a Collins Beach parking pass. On-line sign-up is available at:   http://solveoregon.org/get-involved/events/sauvie-island-collins-beach-cleanup

Be sure to bring gardening work gloves (if you have them), a hat and sunscreen and perhaps a water bottle.  As mentioned, we will have cold water and sugar free lemonade.

There will be a repeat of the clean-ups on August 26 and 27 to fulfill the agreement for the year.  Passes to The Willamettans nudist resort will be given out to those that help (one per person) at these events, and there will be a drawing for a nude watercolor by Henry Yuen after the final event.  Each time you assist gives you an additional entry.

Please consider coming out to assist.  Contact publiclands@aanr-nw.org for more info.

AANR-NW July Rooster Rock/Sauvie Island Beach Celebration Clean-ups on July 8 and 9

                                            Skin to the Wind

Every year on National Nude Weekend, Sun Meadow Resort hosts a festival called the Skin to the Wind Festival of Fun.  It’s a weekend packed with games, sports, food, live entertainment, some workshops, vendors, and a DJ dance.  Here is a rundown of the entertainment that will grace the Sun Meadow stage:

July 13: The Festival opens with David G. Smith.  No, not the guy who sells cars, and not the president of AANR-NW!  This Dave Smith really is a singer. “…one killer track after another that might not fit into the ever narrowing dictates of radio but fitting well into the space between your ears.” -Chris Spector/Midwest Record

July 14: James Lee Stanley returns to the Sun Meadow stage. “One of the best concerts to ever come to Sacramento. James Lee Stanley was a last minute substitute for Jimmy Webb. Like Garfunkel, Stanley sings melodic pop and the slightly risqué anecdotes he told put the crowd in a perfect mood for what was to come. A standing ovation followed his set and he will undoubtedly have fans to come back in Sacramento.”-Mick Martin, The  Sacramento Bee

July 15: The festival ends with a DJ Dance to cap off the weekend.

In addition, expect pickleball, bocce, horseshoes, shuffleboard, sand and water volleyball, a cardboard box regatta, aquacise, a snack bar for lunch and sit-down dinners, plus card games, dominoes, and any other game people decide to play among the choices on the mezzanine.

                                            Reminder – AANR Ballot Proposal

There is less than one week for you to cast your vote for the AANR ballot proposal.  Please make the effort to cast your ballot.  The new process is one that the office has found that will save thousands of dollars.  If you are having problems, please call the office for help.  Please keep the substance of the proposal separate from any frustrations that you have with the voting process.

If you are an AANR member, you have should have received information on a ballot proposal and instructions on how to cast your online vote for that proposal.  I sit on the adhoc committee that was instrumental in getting this proposal in the ballot. The goal of our committee is to find innovative ways to grow AANR membership.  Nearly three years ago, the presidents of all of the AANR regions presented proposals on ways to streamline the membership process, which would free up office time to work on membership recruitment.  However, to make these changes and other ideas that we have had since then, it would be necessary to hold membership ballots. The purpose of this ballot is to allow the leadership to make changes to improve the membership process in a timely manner.  We do not have the time or money to hold ballots for each of these decisions.

Please cast your YES vote for this ballot.  It is important.

AANR is important.  People ask what does AANR do for me. Yes, there are benefits.  However, someone said it a few months ago.  AANR is insurance.  AANR watches out for Nudist rights and works for the acceptance of nudity.  If you like to be nude, AANR is important.  And for AANR to succeed, we need membership to grow.  Help us to grow.  If you aren’t an AANR member, please join.  Talk to your club or go to www.aanr.com.  If you are a member, vote YES on your ballot.
