Jim Smock, Executive Director of AANR, Resigns

AANR President, Susan Weaver, has reported that our Executive Director,
Jim Smock, has tendered his resignation from his position with AANR.
His family situation demands that he spend more time with his sons and
wife in Michigan. Until a replacement is found, Susan will fill the
role of Executive Director, per our ruling documents.

Spokane Valley Ordinance

The all-male city council in Spokane Valley (AANR NW) is trying to
quickly push through an anti-public nudity law that carries a stiff penalty.

The council is rushing it through for a second reading and vote this
Tuesday.

Originally, it was designed because baristas at one coffee house were
scantily clad. Now it has taken on significant implications for nudists.
It bans all nudism, body paint, liquid latex, etc. and carries a $1,000
fine and up to 90 days in jail.

This ordinance should be about food safety and not nudism.

It is interesting to note, the law would not impact the city’s thriving
and all important adult entertainment industry.

Here is a link to the Spokane Valley City Council with their email
addresses. http://www.spokanevalley.org/council

Write them and tell them this is about food safety and NOT nudism.
(from Karen president@aanr-nw.org>, I would also mention that
nudism is not harmful to children, as the ordinance claims,).

Thanks!

Scott Withers swithers@aanr.com>

Roger Duncan

Roger Duncan, a long time AANR-NW director from Fraternity Snoqualmie
,
died last Monday night at about 7:30pm. His wife, Kat,//would like to
have all of Roger’s fellow members and friends come up to FS on Sunday,
Dec 8 at 2:00PM, to share their memories of Roger. This will be a
potluck, so please bring a dish, snack or dessert and your favorite
stories to share. (Kat says you can cry…but don’t let her see it.
Please know that you are welcome.

Nudity in the City of Spokane Valley

In response to scantily clad baristas, the Spokane Valley City Council
is considering an ordinance
that
would dictate a dress code in public places while in the city of Spokane
Valley. The dress code requires private body parts to be covered.
Violations would be considered a misdemeanor and could incur a fine up
to $1000 or 90 days imprisonment.

On November 12th, the city council voted in favor of this ordinance (the
unlawful public exposure ordinance). It will be read again for further
approval on November 26.

See news reports from

* The Spokesman Review

* KTVB

* KXLY

* KHQ

* KREM

Within this ordinance it states –
public nudity and semi-nudity can have a negative impact on the
community, including exposure to minors; and

The definitions in the ordinance are interesting.
8.55.010 – Definitions.
Unless the context clearly requires otherwise, the definitions used in
this chapter shall have the following meanings:
“*Expose or exposure*” means to reveal or otherwise render open to view
in a public place.
“*Full and opaque covering*” means material which is securely attached
over or around the shoulders, neck or back, and which is not transparent
or translucent. Body paint, body dye, tattoos, liquid latex whether wet
or dried, or any similar substance applied to the skin surface shall not
be considered opaque covering. Any substance which can be washed off the
skin is not full and opaque covering as required by this chapter.
“*Prohibited body parts*” for purposes of this chapter means exposure of:
– any part of the male or female genitals, or anus; or
– more than one-half of the female breast by area; or
– any part of the areola or nipple of the female breast.
“*Public place*” means an area visible to public view, including any
place in which the general public has a right to be present or view,
whether or not conditioned upon payment of a fee.

This ordinance does exempt “Adult Entertainment”.

Solve Volunteer Appreciation

AANR-NW Government Affairs Team (GAT): AANR-NW had five representatives
at the SOLVE Volunteer Appreciation event on Thursday, November 7. The
region is in partnership with SOLVE

to do the twice yearly nude beach clean-ups at Rooster Rock and Sauvie
Island nude beaches. Attendees spoke to the new SOLVE executive director
and made contact with the person putting the next SOLVE volunteer
appreciation t-shirt design together to see if they are doing a
co-sponsor program on producing the shirts as well to see if we can
afford to be a sponsor of the shirt with our logo on it also.

Guiness Record Set at Haulover Beach

Last Sunday, 804 Nudists broke the previous record of 729 simultaneous
skinny dippers at a single beach. AANR was at skinny dip record event
at Haulover Beach

near Miami, Florida. Haulover is a public nude beach sanctioned by the
city that draws thousands of beach goers, many from foreign countries.
The beach is a major source of revenue for the city and for businesses
in the area.
AANR and AANR-Florida will be actively lobbying for two or more new nude
beaches in the coming year and are considering seeking the designation
of a nude hiking trail in one of the National forests.

“Naked & Scared Challenge” – Too scary for PA??

Last week, a haunted house operator in Pennsylvania planned, as part of
this year’s scary offerings, to offer the “Naked & Scared Challenge”. In
this option, patrons could go through the haunted house nude. This
seemed like a great idea and would be a lot of fun. AANR contacted the
operator to offer its support. Unfortunately, the owner informed AANR
that the naked challenge was cancelled due to local government pressure
and concern that law enforcement could shut down his entire operation.

A vocal minority has imposed its will on so many others. Close minded
individuals have made a decision for everyone else. AANR will be
commenting in the various media outlets that are covering this story.
This event reinforces the need for AANR to get beyond the “walls and
fences” and educate the general public about social nudism.

Nudism and Science Fiction – by Mike Parker

Reprinted from the WellSpring

In the early 1960’s, the late Forrest J (Forry) Ackerman
,
nudist and penultimate science fiction fan (he won a HUGO award in 1953
for #1 Fan Personality), wrote an article in a nudist magazine with the
above title. Ackerman was the editor of Famous Monsters of Filmland and
coiner of the abbreviated term “sci-fi”.
Some years back, your editor met Ackerman as well as famed authorRobert
L. Heinlein,

writer of far more than one book where nudity was featured. A rumor was
going around for years that Heinlein had been an early member of the
club now known as Mountain Air Ranch, which is the second oldest club in
the west. Subsequent to his death, we sent a query to his widow and
his estate agent asking if this was true. We received no answer. The
answer did come out recently in Heinlein’s posthumous biography,
published after the death of his widow, Virginia Heinlein, not long
ago. It acknowledged, in print, that Heinlein was indeed an early
member of that club. Did our request prompt this posthumous admission?
Perhaps.
Other major science fiction authors also have been nudists and some of
them were (and are) also members of our organization. Privacy concerns
prevent the release of their names.
Nudity was prominently featured in the late Phillip Jose Farmer
’s
Riverworld

series, where each reincarnated person from Earth awoke as a young adult
and nude along the classic book series’ seemingly endless winding
river. Each time they died, they awoke in the same state, nude again,
still farther down the river.
Here is an on-line location where classic science fiction books are
reviewed by nudists:
http://io9.com/5889724/classic-science-fiction-novels-reviewed-by-nudists
. Another such location is: http://www.naturistplace.com/nudesf.htm

In space, no one can hear you scream and it definitely is too cold to
undress, but, inside the fictional literary space ships, perhaps they
truly were going where no one had gone before. And with nothing to wear!

Serious Landslide at Wreck Beach

On Sunday, October 13th just after 2:00pm PDT, a serious landslide
turned Trail 5 from Northwest Marine Drive to Wreck beach into a sheer
cliff dropping 180m to the beach. Luckily, no one is known to be hurt.
The trail is closed because it is still an active slide area. This
trail has been closed for over 10 years, is not on trail maps, and is
not the main access to the beach.

Nudist Rights

At the AANR-NW fall board meeting (9/28-29/2013), the board decided to
explore means to better inform our members and the public on the efforts
that AANR and AANR-NW make on behalf of nudist rights. The preliminary
focus will be on providing short articles on significant nudist rights
issues in the weekly eNews and other AANR-NW publications. These
articles may include news items, links to other publications or
websites, and pending legislation at federal, state or local levels.
Assistance would be appreciated. If you see any related news items

event at the east end of the parking lot that morning, meet instead at
the office near the entrance. The clean-up should not last longer than
around three hours, and will be followed by a hamburger/hot dog barbeque
out on the beach where the main trail comes through the vegetation.
AANR-NW will provide table, barbeque, plates, tableware, napkins, cold
water, sugar free lemonade, burgers, hot dogs and trimmings and some
dessert snacks. The only restrooms accessible from the nude beach are
located near the parking area.
Sunday, October 6 -Sauvie Island-Collins Beach

– clean-up at noon. A parking pass is usually required and can be
purchased at the store or deli after crossing the bridge to the island
but SOLVE again is providing free day-of-event passes for those that
volunteer. Restrooms are portable toilets located in the parking area
near the beach trail openings. We will concentrate our efforts on the
gravel road parking area and litter sweeps of the beach area from nude
beach opening one (number two marked opening) to the opening marked
number six. Meet on the beach near the second nude beach opening (number
3 opening). A potluck will be held at around 2:00 p.m. AANR-NW

will supply a barbeque, hamburgers, hot dogs and fixings, water, sugar
free lemonade, plates, tableware, napkins as well as a table and
covering canopy. Bring a folding chair/towel to sit on and dry off with
as well as a potluck item and your favorite beverage.
For your security, please do not leave any items visible in your vehicle.
We need additional volunteers at these events so that we can retain our
beach sponsorship. These legal nude beaches are unique to Oregon and we
want to continue to keep our beaches bare!!
