Why AANR?

Why should you join AANR or TNS?  What value does it provide to you?  I could always point out the discounts that you get when you visit various nudist clubs, or the publications that let you know where there are safe places to go.  But the real reason that we need AANR is for insurance.  Our privilege to be able to practice social nudism is constantly being challenged.  Regularly in this publication we see stories that point out examples of such threats.  Without the network of watchdogs that we/AANR/TNS are, we will lose the progress that has been made by those that have gone before us.  As it is, we win some and we lose some.  But we need to keep up this fight.

We can only do this by continuing to grow.  And this means you.  We need you to continue to be vigilant, letting others know when you see a threat and to join so that we have the membership numbers and dollars to be effective in this struggle.

There are various ways to join AANR.  You can join AANR as an associate through AANR.com. This means that you are an AANR member without a club.   Or you can join AANR at a discounted rate by joining through a club.  There are several event clubs in the region that are actively looking for AANR members.  You can contact them at.

If you are an associate member and would like to transfer your membership to one of these clubs, download the transfer form from https://aanr-nw.org/Transfer.pdf and send it to the club of your choice.

      AANR-NW July Rooster Rock/Sauvie Island Beach Clean-ups

AANR-NW has continued to be beach adopters for the two legal nude beaches in Oregon as well as Rooster Rock State Park.  As such, two beach litter clean-ups must be scheduled each year to fulfill the agreement.  For a few years, the water was extremely high for the first one, to the point that even the trails were under water.  This year, the events have been scheduled later in the summer so that there is absolutely no chance of that happening.
The first beach clean-up will be on Saturday, July 30 at 10:00 a.m. at Rooster Rock State Park.  This is a clothing optional event, if you are cleaning in the nude area. It is highly suggested that you wear shoes and sun screen. Hats are also recommended if it is very bright.  Bring work gloves if you have them.  All tools and clean-up bags will be furnished.  We will be working with the Rooster Rock park staff. The Park Ranger Supervisor will have a list of projects that includes light to heavy work. Volunteers do not have to pay the day use fee.  Tell the person in the registration booth that you are there for the clean-up. When registering, you will receive a card to put in your window.  Meet at the east end of the parking lot near the restrooms.   This should not last longer than around three hours, and will be followed by a hot dog barbeque.  AANR-NW will provide cold water, sugar free lemonade, hot dogs, buns and trimmings and some dessert snacks.   Please do not  leave any items visible in your car. The only restrooms accessible from the nude beach are located near the parking area.
Sunday, July 31 – Sauvie Island-Collins Beach – clean-up at 1:00 p.m. – A parking pass is usually required and can be purchased at the store or deli after crossing the bridge to the island.  SOLVE may again be able to get us some free day-of-event passes for those that volunteer. Restrooms are close and located in the parking area. We will concentrate our efforts on the gravel road parking area and litter sweeps of the beach area. Meet on the beach near the second nude beach opening.   A hot dog barbeque and potluck will be held at around 3:30 p.m.  Contact gat@aanr-nw.org for further details on these events and on how to get a Collins Beach parking pass.
There will be a repeat of the clean-ups on September 24 and 25 to fulfill the agreement for the year.

Come to the AANR Convention at the Willamettans

For the first time in the history of AANR, the national convention will be held in the same region two years in a row.  After a great convention at Sun Meadow last year, AANR members will return to the Northwest again at the Willies.

AANR Northwest is unique in that member clubs work together to make the convention a success both in the number of attendees and in having fun.  An example is the reception called AANR NORTHWEST WELCOMES AANR to be held on Tuesday, August 16.  Each club is asked to bring hors d’oeuvre to share with our guests.  The theme that day is “Western Days”.

The Willamettans are planning a fun week of parades, sports, bands, great food and drink, and friendly folks.  Bring your club banner and show the country that you are proud to be part of this region.

The convention runs from August 8 – August 14.

More information can be found at http://willamettans.com.

                Summer is finally here

It’s finally here.  Time to come out of our shells and enjoy being out in the all together.  There are so many activities to choose from.  There are music festivals, runs and just sitting on the beach or lawn taking a good air bath.  .There are a couple of things not to forget.  Don’t forget sun screen.  It is important.   Don’t forget to be kind to your fellow nudists.  It is so easy to forget.  And lastly, don’t forget to stay vigilant.  Watch out for threats to  nudism.  In just this last week, two issues have crossed our desks.  Please, when you hear about troubling issues, please let someone know.  If it an emergency situation, call 9-1-1.  Otherwise, contact president@aanr-nw.org and gat@aanr-nw.org.

                You are invited…

You are encouraged to come to either or both the AANR-NW Convention at Sun Meadow (July 14-17) and the AANR Convention at the Willamettans (August 8-14). Fun activities are planned for both.  Your participation is welcomed.  Leadership wants to meet you and to find out what you think.  Your opinions count.  If you come, your presence will be noted and appreciated.

                Erratum

The dates for a few of the concerts at this year’s “Skin to the Wind” festival were misstated in last week’s edition.  Please check for the corrected dates in this copy.

The 2016 World Naked Bike Ride is scheduled for Saturday, June 25th.  It will start at Mt. Scott City Park, SE 74th Ave and SE Knight St,  in Portland.  The annual, world wide bike ride highlights the vulnerability of cyclists and protests our society’s dependence on pollution-based transportation.  Many thousands of riders are expected this year.  At about 8:55pm an announcement will be made that the ride is about to begin.  The route will be not disclosed until the ride begins.  The adrenaline of the ride makes the cold of the Portland night disappear.

Skin to the Wind — AANR-NW Carnival (aka convention)

The annual AANR-NW Regional convention this year is at Sun Meadow and immediately follows their Skin to the WInd Festival of Fun.   It all starts on July 7.

The musical line up has been announced and it is impressive.

“Skin to the WInd” Festival of Fun

                          Bryan Bowers – July 7
The Angela Marie Project – July 8
                          Buddy Mondlock – July 9
                          Contra Dance – July 10
Kray van Kirk – July 11
DJ Dance with John and Laurie – July 12
                          Halladay Quist – July 13

AANR-NW Regional Convention  follows immediately on July 14th.  Sun Meadow is planning a great carnival with games, sports, and entertainment, including more concerts with Flagship Romance and  with Scott Kirby and another DJ dance.  We are still planning the workshops.  What are you interested in learning about?  What are you interested in teaching?  Please send your ideas to president@aanr-nw.org

One workshop that we are planning will be where we will work on creating new brochures to explain nudism. We can bring together the people with the ideas with the people that like to write.   AANR has “From a woman’s perspective”.  We have a lot of knowledge about nudism.  Let’s work together and get some of our ideas down onto paper.  Perhaps we can write “From a man’s perspective”.  Another pamphlet might be about why nudism helps body acceptance.  Or one about how healthy nudism is for children.  These are just some examples.  It would be great to have this kind of information to put on https://aanr-nw.org and also to be able to hand out next year at Northwest Folkliife.

Don’t delay in making plans for ten days of fun in Northern Idaho.

                          Fremont Solstice Parade and Fair

The Fremont Solstice Fair, fremontsolstice.com, is coming up this weekend, June 17-19, in the Fremont neighborhood in Seattle.  It celebrates summertime with three full days of festivities, including arts and crafts booths, local entertainment, decorated cars and various street performers. The event draws more than 100,000 guests each year.  Two local nudists clubs, Tiger Mountain Club and Lake Bronson, are scheduled to have information booths in the non-profit section of the crafts market, so drop by and say hello, or join in to pitch nudism to the crowds.

One highlight of the fair is the Solstice Parade, Saturday at 3PM.  The parade is always preceded by a large group of body painted nude bicyclists, with well over a thousand cyclists last year.  If you want to join in the bike ride fun, there is a painting party or you can do your own preparation.  Learn more at www.solsticecyclist.org.  If you just want to watch the cyclists and parade, the cyclists should reach the parade route about 2:30, and you should plan to arrive early to land a viewing spot.

Protest Closure of Transit Stop Near Wreck Beach in British Columbia

Translink, which is Vancouver’s transportation system, removed Bus Stop c-20 (University Blvd. and Marine Drive) without consulting with the Wreck Beach Preservation Society.  Removing the bus stop makes it significantly more difficult to use public transportation when visiting Wreck Beach.  No ridership analysis was done before removing this stop.   It is possible to add your name in support of the Wreck Beach Preservation Society at https://wreckbeach.wordpress.com/.

Wreck Beach is an internationally-acclaimed 7.8 km long Nudist beach, located in Vancouver, BC, Canada, making it North America’s largest naturist beach. – See more at: http://www.wreckbeach.org/#sthash.9ACIqFES.dpuf

The text of the petition is
We, the undersigned users of Wreck Beach and Pacific Spirit Regional Park, draw TransLink Management’s attention to the following:
                                WHEREAS:
                                1. Our tax dollars fund TransLink (TL) which is for all public users. As major stakeholders on the Point Grey Peninsula, Wreck Beach Preservation Society (WBPS) members/ users deserve the same respect accorded residents, members of UNA and the Endowment Lands in Electoral District A, and UBC Staff, Faculty and students. Therefore, the WBPS should also have been directly contacted by TL regarding removal of Bus Stop C-20 as advised Fall 2015 by Krista Falkner of UBC Transportation. The WBPS was founded 47 years ago on the principles of having public input, before NOT after the fact regarding proposals of possible impact on Wreck Beach users and/or on the beach, foreshore and cliffs;
                                2. It is unacceptable that TransLink claims they are “responsible for safety of students,” made in the same context as references to “increased sexual assaults on Campus.” West Area Parks, stewards of Wreck Beach, and the UBC Detachment of the RCMP were also not consulted or asked about the importance of the C-20 Bus Stop to Wreck Beach users. No publicity appeared in The Vancouver Sun or Province and did not specify Stop C-20 or Wreck Beach. Groups were not approached unless they asked.
                                3. Persons with mobility problems or age-related problems or families with small children, find it arduous to go another 440 steps or 60 metres after climbing nearly 500 steps; many Bus drivers along Lower Mall have also complained about the number of speed bumps. We of the Wreck Beach Community and Stakeholders on the Point Grey Peninsula therefore respectfully request the permanent re-instatement of the C-20 TransLink Bus Stop Summer 2016!

                                Conventions are Coming

This week’s newsletter filled up.  So watch next week for information about the upcoming AANR-NW Regional Convention at Sun Meadow immediately following ‘Skin to the WInd’ for a Carnival of fun from July 7 – July 17.  And then from August 8 – August 15 put on a Happy Face at the WIllamettans at the AANR convention.

                                2016 Eastern Gathering

The Naturist Society’s 2016 Eastern Gathering is June 13-19 at Poyntelle, Pennsylvania. There will be plenty of workshops and activities of interest to naked folk, and it should be fun. I’ll be attending, so if there are any other nudists from the Pacific Northwest going, let’s get together there and compare notes on where to enjoy nude recreation in our rainy part of the States. For info on the gathering, see www.naturistsociety.com and click on “Events.” See you there?! — Kathy Blanchard

                                  Women in Naturism Weekend

The Women in Naturism Weekend #WINW is a global open house led by Naturist Women at Nudist Resorts & Clubs around the world encouraging women to experience body positive nudism.  The idea of the weekend came from British Naturism, and is being sponsored by AANR, The Naturist Society and Women in Nude Recreation.

Here in the Northwest, two clubs are actively participating in the weekend.

                                        AANR By-Law Amendments

                                        by Karen Lahey

There are four bylaw amendments.  These are my interpretations of them.

                                        1.   A “yes” vote on this motion would move the province of Ontario, Canada, to the Eastern Region.   A “no” vote would support leaving this Section of the Bylaws as it is currently.  This bylaw moves the clubs in the province of Ontario from AANR-Midwest to AANR-East.  The rationale for this bylaw is that the clubs are physically closer to AANR East.  The  PRO statement was written by the president of AANR East.  There is no CON statement.
                                        2. A “yes” vote on this motion would support specifying that only a plurality (as opposed to a majority) is required in selecting a convention site.  A “no” vote would support leaving this Section of the Bylaws as it is currently.  This bylaw will change how conventions will be voted on.  For example, suppose three clubs are bidding for an election,   Club A gets 45% of the votes, Club B gets  35% of the votes and Club C gets 20% of the votes.  Currently, there would have to be a revote until a compromise could be reached and one of the clubs received more than 50% of the vote.  This amendment would change it so that Club A would be awarded the convention after the first vote.
                                        3. A “yes” vote on this motion would support changing the existing wording regarding tie votes and when the president is allowed to vote.  A “no” vote would support leaving these sections as they are currently.  This change allows the president to cast a ballot when it would affect the result rather than just in the case of a tie.   For example, the president’s vote could force a tie.   This change in wording brings our ruling documents into accordance with Robert’s Rules or Order.
                                        4. A “yes” vote on this motion would support the appointment of an interim Executive Director in the event of a vacancy.  A “no” vote would support leaving this Section of the Bylaws as it is currently. This bylaw will allow a sitting president to appoint an interim executive director when necessary.  Currently, the president must take on the responsibilities of both the executive director and the president.

Staten Island High School Art Students Told to Clothe their Anti-Rape Artwork

Susan E. Wagner High School in Staten Island, NY, censored students’ art work that was speaking out against our rape culture simply because it included photographs of the nude female back.   In doing so, an online petition against this censorship was started that is still gathering support at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/spreading-feminism-in-wagner/ .

July Rooster Rock/Sauvie Island Beach Clean-ups

The weather for both Saturday and Sunday this week is expected to be warm.  Be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen and perhaps a water bottle.  We will have cold water and sugar free lemonade.  See below for more info!

– A parking pass is usually required.  SOLVE again was able to get us some free day-of-event passes for those that volunteer.  Contact GAT@aanr-nw.org to get one in a pdf format!
