What do AANR-NW nudists do in the winter?  Some are fortunate to follow the sun while others are busy planning nudist activities for the summer.  AANR-NW GAT has for over fifteen years hosted four beach cleanups every summer.  Two at Rooster Rock State Park and two at Sauvie Island clothing optional nude beach area.  Four beach cleanups are required to maintain the AANR beach adoptions through the Oregon State Park Adopt-A-Park program and SOLVE adoption program.
Volunteers are seldom paid; not because they are worthless but because they are priceless. (Author unknown) AANR-NW GAT is seeking priceless volunteers to host beach cleanups.  
You might be asking yourself what it involves.  Basically it involves committing to be at the park on a date you previously set date.  AANR-NW GAT Chair Shirley Gauthier and AANR-NW Public Lands Chair Mike Parker have lots of experience at beach cleanups and more than happy to guide you through the process.  
Sauvie Island cleanups have been directed at the gravel parking area and can be held most any time.  Rooster Rock cleanups are coordinated with the park rangers.  Beach events can be as simple as posting the date and time and requesting everyone bring their own water, sunscreen, and gloves.  Shirley and Mike would be very helpful writing and posting the events.  
Authur Ash once said “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”  If your one of our priceless beach volunteers please consider stepping up to hosting one of the beach cleanups.   
Qualifications to host a beach cleanup are simple.  Commit to show up on a specific date on time.  Welcome the cleanup volunteers and lend a bit of leadership.  AANR-NW beach volunteers are so experienced they will guide and mentor you!  

 

INTERNATIONAL SKINNY DIP DAY.

THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR NUDE RECREATION HAS OFFICIALLY DESIGNATED THE SECOND SATURDAY IN JULY AS INTERNATIONAL SKINNY DIP DAY

Skinny-dipping, a wholesome tradition as old as mankind and frequently honored in art and movies, celebrates the natural joy of plunging into water without the hindrance of clothing. To celebrate this rite of summer, the American Association for Nude Recreation (www.aanr.com) has officially designated the second Saturday in July as International Skinny Dip Day.  For 2018, International Skinny Dip Day will be observed on July 14th.
On International Skinny Dip Day, the textile world can join with naturists and free themselves of their clothes and inhibitions by taking a dip au natural in their backyard pool, a secluded spot on a river or lake, at a sanctioned nude beach or at one of AANR’s 200 clubs and resorts throughout the U.S., Canada and internationally.

International Skinny Dip Day (ISDD) serves as the culminating event during National Nude Recreation Week. This annual celebration is an opportunity for individuals and families to visit clothing-optional clubs affiliated with AANR or The Naturist Society (TNS), and experience firsthand one of the fastest growing trends in both travel and recreation – the Nakation™. Many AANR-affiliated clubs have activities and events planned throughout the week – such as open houses, dance parties, sports tournaments, chili cook-offs, “bare buns fun runs,” health screenings, art shows, and more.

A small step out of the clothes closet

Here is an idea that I published four years ago.  Let’s try it again.

Need an Idea for a Nude Year’s Resolution?

Here’s a suggestion for a Nude Year’s Resolution that can increase acceptance of nudism. Let some of the textiles that you live and work with know you are a nudist. By doing this, nudists are no longer ‘others’. It puts a non threatening face on nudism. Each of us has our own individual comfort level about who knows we participate in social nudism. I propose that each of us takes a small step out of the clothes closet. This will be different for each of us. I am very open about being a nudist. Last year, it was a stretch when I agreed to enter a Toastmasters Humorous Speech contest with a speech titled “How to pack for a nude cruise”. But I did it. It was well received. Afterwards, I was asked questions and was able to to talk about the various nudist venues in the area. I also added that I wrote the AANRMobile app for Android to my professional resume. Now, I have to figure out what to do in the coming year. My challenge to you is “Are you willing to take a small step out of your comfort zone?” Not only will it help nudist acceptance, but it can be very freeing to conquer a personal fear. Line in the Sand at Rooster Rock State Park

Long gone are the days when the entire Rooster Rock State Park was nude friendly and legal.  On May 15, 1979 the Oregon Transportation Commission adopted a certificate and order filing with the Secretary of State that drew a line portioning off a section of the park for use by textiles.  This was effective on May 17, 1979.  The documents I have states that this came about because nudity was being challenged by a small group with religious ties

Many AANR-NW members may remember the days when we would freely walk from the beach to the parking, rest rooms and picnic areas.  We enjoyed nude recreation throughout the entire park clear down to the boat launch area on the West end of the park.

 When nude recreation was being challenged by a small group we can give credit to Regional Parks Supervisor Frank Stiles who favored designating an area for nude recreation over banning nudity altogether at Rooster Rock.

AANR-NW has for the past 15 years partnered with Oregon State Parks Dept. and holds the official adoption through the Adopt-A-Park program.  AANR-NW Government Affairs team volunteers were instrumental in working with Rooster Rock Park staff to create the verbage, and purchase the sign you see in the picture.  That sign has since faded, grown tired and worn.  

At the AANR-NW fall board meeting attendees were solicited to contribute to purchase additional signs at Rooster Rock.  As always members were generous in their financial support.  Rooster Rock Park Manager Glenn Littrell has ordered two of the rules signs and four additional boundary marker signs.  Glenn thanked AANR-NW for our funding and continued partnership with Oregon State Parks.

Winter Nude Swims

While not in AANR-NW, our neighbors to the north give us ample opportunities to continue to swim throughout the winter.  Almost every Saturday, one of the clubs near Vancouver, BC, hosts a nude swim. 

However, this next Saturday is somewhat special.  The Skinnydippers are hosting their monthly nude swim at the Newton Wave Pool in Surrey BC.  It’s special, because it starts and ends an hour early, which makes it easier for folks who want to travel home that evening.  The swim starts at 8:30pm, following a social dinner at Fay’s Family Restaurant at 6:00pm.  The Newton Wave Pool cycles through little waves, large waves and no waves.  The multiple story water slides are especially fun with no swimsuits.  Even the life guards have commented that they wish they could use the slides sans suits because we go so fast.  The site also has a large hot tub and a steam room.

Unwelcome Reception at Issaquah Salmon Days

For many years, my husband and I have manned an information booth for Tiger Mountain Family Nudist Park at the Issaquah Salmon Days Festival.   The park is a long time member of the Issaquah Chamber of Commerce. I have had many conversations with the ex mayor, who was very supportive of our participation in the fair.  However, this year, we had two separate incidents that pointed out that nudism still has a long way to go for acceptance. 

The first was when Brian Twiggs, the Festival DIrector, approached our booth and insisted that one of our volunteers put his sweatpants on.  He was wearing a swimsuit.  The comment was “This is a family friendly event.”  Apparently, there had been an unspecified number of complaints.  They refused to tell us the number.  We objected, pointing out that it was a swim suit, bought at a local sporting goods store.  However, the volunteer immediately put on his sweatpants.  After a further discussion, Mr. Twiggs relented, and also reimbursed the club for the entry fee.  However, Mr. Twiggs first response was that a swim suit was not family friendly and that we were not family friendly.

The second incident occurred when I was visiting another booth, signing up as a volunteer.  I overheard one of the women running the booth talking with a woman from another booth (she was able to leave her booth because one of our volunteers was giving her a break).  They were saying how happy they were to not be near our booth.  They didn’t want to be associated with us because we were about sex.  When questioned, the one woman said they knew we weren’t really about sex, but they didn’t want the public to think they might be associated, by just being down the street.  The other woman, who had accepted our volunteer spelling her, wouldn’t even talk to me.  These were two groups that have had to struggle for their own acceptance, and who should have been willing to accept us in the same way.

It is really easy to think that nudism is accepted, especially when you talk among your friends about it.  But I fear we still have a long way to go.
