Reaction to Nude Year’s Resolutions

Three of our readers are willing to share their responses to the
challenge to take a small step out of the clothes closet.
=======================
With regard to your New Year’s Resolution suggestion:

Although people tend to resist change, they gradually adapt to changes
in the prevailing customs. A century ago, one could be arrested for
indecency for wearing a form-fitting one-piece bathing costume. After
WWII, two-piece swim suits gradually became more popular and more
abbreviated, and now Victoria’s Secret can put runway shows on
television with a minimum amount of fabric. However, in a retrograde
move, even Victoria’s Secret costumes show not the least suggestion of a
nipple, whereas 40 years ago soft bras were popular and nipples were not
obscene.

Since Oregon has no laws against non-sexual public nudity (although
cities may impose their own restrictions), it may be possible for clubs
to advertise with appropriate pictures, such as on a billboard near
their facilities, or other suitable locations.

The more people see of nudism, the less they will consider it a weird
fringe movement.

Nude regards,

Desmond Armstrong

=======================
Karen, that was a very interesting article on your Toastmaster’s experience.

On the theme of “packing” for anything nudist related. Everytime Mona
and I head for SMR we go through this routine of finding the right
clothes to take. We then laugh and ask ourselves what in the world are
we thinking. We need no clothes! We then make sure we have our robes,
towels, flip flops, and sun screen. But the interesting thing that
boggles our minds is… why do we have SO MUCH laundry after a
weekend?!? I don’t think I could handle a textile weekend of camping
again. The laundry would swamp us!

=======================
When I retired ,the employees had a small party for me . One of my co-
workers made a plaque for me with my working years on it . At the base
of the plaque it also had inscribed that I belonged to TNS.There were
Questions… I stood up and told about 50 people that TNS was a Naturist
organization. Everyone thought that I was also a Biologist as well as a
Maintenance Worker . I cleared it up for them . A few blushed and a few
whistled, mostly laughter.I thought it was good for all of them.

Need an Idea for a Nude Year’s Resolution?

Here’s a suggestion for a Nude Year’s Resolution that can increase
acceptance of nudism. Let some of the textiles that you live and work
with know you are a nudist. By doing this, nudists are no longer
‘others’. It puts a non threatening face on nudism.
Each of us has our own individual comfort level about who knows we
participate in social nudism. I propose that each of us takes a small
step out of the clothes closet. This will be different for each of us.
I am very open about being a nudist. Last year, it was a stretch when
I agreed to enter a Toastmasters Humorous Speech contest with a speech
titled “How to pack for a nude cruise”. But I did it. It was well
received. Afterwards, I was asked questions and was able to to talk
about the various nudist venues in the area. I also added that I wrote
the AANRMobile app for Android to my professional resume. Now, I have
to figure out what to do in the coming year.
My challenge to you is “Are you willing to take a small step out of your
comfort zone?” Not only will it help nudist acceptance, but it can be
very freeing to conquer a personal fear. Send me your ideas
(president@aanr-nw.org) president@aanr-nw.org> and we will share
them (anonymously if you prefer) .

Naturally,
Karen Lahey

The Ethical Nudist

According to
the Cambridge
American English Dictionary, a nudist is “a person who believes that not
wearing clothes is healthy and who is often part of a group of people
who meet to practice their belief.”

feel about nude access to public lands, Read the article and take the

Nothing to Hide: West Michigan should open market for nude beach

We encourage readers to send us pointers to interesting articles. Here
is a blog forwarded by a reader from earlier this year. The author
makes interesting points.

This article is quoted in whole from
http://www.battlecreekenquirer.com/article/20130420/OPINION02/304200035/

Written by Bill Schroer — Nothing to Hide

Image

From earlier columns the alert reader will recall the author is a
naturist … someone who believes non-sexual nudity is a positive, healthy
approach to living and brings us closer to nature and an appreciation of
the world around us.

One of the ways even many non-naturists enjoy occasional public nudity
is via skinny dipping. In a 2006 Roper poll over 25 percent of adults in
a national sampling have skinny dipped in mixed company at some point.

While many of these occurrences take place at private homes with
swimming pools, at one of the thousands of obscure lakes or ponds around
the country or at naturist resorts, there are a number of public nude
beaches around the country.

From Florida to New Jersey to California … these legal nude beaches
provide an opportunity to work on your tan without tan lines or simply
swim as nature intended … without wearing wet, clammy bathing suits.

But why does Michigan need a nude beach?

Image

I imagine many readers have their own reasons for the answer to that
question but here are my top selections:

1. It’s cool. Nude beaches exist all over Europe … particularly Spain,
Germany, France, Denmark and Sweden.

The most progressive and forward thinking countries are also the most
open about public nudity. Here in the U.S., Florida, California and New
York/New Jersey lead the way as trend setters in other areas of society
as well as nude beaches. We could be right up there with them.

2. It’s good business. The nude beach in Miami (Haulover Beach)
represents only 1/3 mile of beachfront in South Miami, but is
responsible for more than twice the parking and user fees of a
comparable non-naturist beach nearby.

From the time Haulover Beach was identified as clothing optional in
1991, revenues have increased 126 percent while revenues for the nearby
“textile” Crandon Beach have declined.

3. Its good for tourism. There are naturists all over the world seeking
positive, safe, beautiful nude beaches.

Isn’t Michigan’s tourist industry one of the leading generators of
revenue in the state? If Florida’s Pasco County commission can authorize
thousands of dollars to be spent in German naturist magazines attracting
German naturists to Florida’s naturist resorts, why would we doubt Pure
Michigan’s pristine beaches couldn’t be equally (or more) compelling to
European naturists?

4. It’s fair. It doesn’t often occur to non-naturists … but naturists
are taxpayers too. We fund the state and national parks and seashores as
much as any other dedicated user group (think snowmobilers, horseback
riders, bicyclists, hikers and campers).

These user groups have dedicated trails, riding paths, campgrounds or
other parts of state and national parks dedicated for their use … why
not a clothing optional beach for naturists?

Citing the same Roper poll from 2006, 74 percent of respondents to the
poll “believe that people who enjoy nude sunbathing should be able to do
so … as long as they do so at a beach that is accepted for that purpose.”

5. And, lastly, and importantly for me, it gives us all a chance to get
comfortable with our own bodies. I wrote earlier about the body image
issues so many Americans have. Too many of us are embarrassed by our
bodies. And, we are even more intolerant of others. You don’t see that
in Europe.

None of us have perfect bodies … but too often I hear people say “I
don’t want to see that “fat”, “old”, “wrinkled” or whatever hurtful
descriptor comes to mind.

Really? I don’t want to see pigeons either but somehow I’m mature enough
to deal with it. That lack of acceptance of our own bodies and others is
debilitating, hurts our self-esteem and our ability to accept and
connect with others.

As a final thought … to those who think a clothing optional or nude
beach means an abandonment of the fabric of society and/or the advent of
a new debauchery: One cannot do anything on a nude beach one can’t do on
a “textile” beach (i.e public sex, gawk at women, etc.)

The only difference in standards is that one doesn’t have clothes on. It
doesn’t mean you can behave like a jackass.

Now, how about carving out a section of Willard Beach to be clothing
optional?

Nudist Rights

There are a variety of ways that AANR and AANR-NW use to communicate
with our members about our nudist rights. AANR publishes “The
Bulletin”, our monthly newspaper/magazine which goes to all AANR
members. It always has reporting by our Government Affairs Team, and by
AANR’s president and Executive Director. AANR also sends out via the
internet, the “eBulletin”, which often contains articles related to
nudist rights. You can sign up to receive the eBulletin by visiting the
AANR website, www.aanr.com

AANR-NW publishes the “Northwest Nudescene” four times per year, an
insert to The Bulletin sent to all AANR-NW members. However, the best
way to keep up with events and what is happening related to nudist
rights is this eNews that you are reading. Please encourage your nudist

John Salvin

On October 11, John Salvin, a member of Fraternity Snoqualmie, passed
away. See his obituary at
http://edline-yahn.com/memsol.cgi?user_id=1128437

John was an ASA (AANR forerunner) trustee from 1969-1975. He was
awarded the first Hall of Fame award from the NSA (AANR-NW forerunner)
in 1988, Because of his leadership, at the fall AANR-NW board meeting,
we set aside funds to record a video interview with him. Unfortunately,
we were too late to get that interview.
Stan and Gretchen Nanevicz from FS have written a heartfelt obituary
about him and we would like to share that below with you.

A GIANT HAS FALLEN

With the passing of long time member John Salvin, Fraternity Snoqualmie
has lost one of the most dedicated and influential figures in the nudist
world. John, along with his wife Ethel and daughter Becky first came to
Forestia (FS) in the early 1960’s. It didn’t take long for them to
accept nudism as a way of life that would continue for more than half a
century.
Right from the start, John, a man of vision, could foresee that the
survival of the club and of nudism would require some serious public
relations efforts. He took it upon himself to actively pursue this goal.
John was not at all reluctant to tell people that he was a nudist. He
was proud of the fact. In interviews with the press or other public
media, he used his full name and not simply his first name or a
nickname. He gave truthful answers to all questions that were asked,
always portraying nudism as a wholesome activity, suitable for people of
all ages and all walks of life. He encouraged participation not only by
entire families, but also by single men and women, regardless of race or
creed.
John’s PR efforts took many forms including the chairmanship of
“Visitors’ Days” events, the design of floats for the Issaquah Salmon
Days Parade, the preparation of newspaper ads, speeches before civic
groups, and the invitation of members of the press to our park. He even
went so far as to speak to groups of high school students, being very
careful to avoid saying anything that would likely be considered
offensive. John believed that nudism should be practiced at nudist
parks, resorts, nude beaches, or other places that had been officially
set aside as nudist areas. He never appeared nude in public places
where nudity had not been officially sanctioned.
John’s profession was the manufacture and installation of draperies. He
owned a shop in Seattle’s south end, and he served a large number of
customers. (He made some beautiful drapes for us. They still grace our
home.) Among his customers was the Alaska Marine Highway which had a
fleet of ferries that travelled between Seattle and Haines, Alaska.
Another big customer was the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in
Minneapolis, Minnesota.
A Fraternity Snoqualmie intra-organizational group with which John and
Ethel were involved was the Forestian Camera Club. This club, also
affiliated with the Northwest Council of Camera Clubs, consisted of FS
members whose amateur photographic skills were devoted mainly to
Kodachrome slides (no digital in those days). We would gather at a
restaurant in Seattle and then, after dinner, we would proceed to John’s
shop where there was a large room, quite suitable for slide viewing.
Often we drove to the restaurant, taking our son, Tom ( a pre-teen in
those days) with us. After dinner, Tom liked to ride to the shop with
John and Ethel. John had a way with kids. He knew a few “magic”
tricks, mostly with cards or coins and Tom was fascinated with this. He
once told us, “John Salvin is a Magician!” One day, we were outside our
house and Tom was indoors. The phone rang and he answered it. He stuck
his head outside and yelled, “Telephone!” We asked who it was and Tom
replied, “Hocus Pocus!” This was our private nickname for John for
umpteen years.
John served on the FS Executive Board for many years, but never chose to
seek election as club president. He believed that he could do more for
the club as chairman of various committees, especially Public Relations.
Eventually, he decided not to run again for the executive board. He
was selected to be a Board Member Emeritus, whereby the Board relied
heavily on his words of advice, based on knowledge gained through years
of service.
After John retired from the drapery business, he and Ethel became
“snowbirds”. Every autumn, they would drive to Southern California.
While there, they would make frequent trips to Mexico. These trips
were, in part, for sightseeing, but mainly they were “booze runs”. They
would bring back, across the border, the legal limits so that, in the
Spring, when they returned to the “Gray Northwet”, they could bring
home a few bottles of Kahlua and a few bottles of Bombay Sapphire.
And, so we say a final “Good bye” to John. Our sympathies are with
Ethel, Becky, and the grandkids. Truly, we share the loss. John could
tell a joke and make us laugh. Or his words could take a more serious
tone, but when he spoke, people would listen. In physical stature, he
was about average, but in his accomplishments, in the impact he had on
our lives, John Salvin was a giant among men.

Spokane Valley Ordinance

The all-male city council in Spokane Valley (AANR NW) is trying to
quickly push through an anti-public nudity law that carries a stiff penalty.

The council is rushing it through for a second reading and vote this
Tuesday.

Originally, it was designed because baristas at one coffee house were
scantily clad. Now it has taken on significant implications for nudists.
It bans all nudism, body paint, liquid latex, etc. and carries a $1,000
fine and up to 90 days in jail.

This ordinance should be about food safety and not nudism.

It is interesting to note, the law would not impact the city’s thriving
and all important adult entertainment industry.

Here is a link to the Spokane Valley City Council with their email
addresses. http://www.spokanevalley.org/council

Write them and tell them this is about food safety and NOT nudism.
(from Karen president@aanr-nw.org>, I would also mention that
nudism is not harmful to children, as the ordinance claims,).

Thanks!

Nudity in the City of Spokane Valley

In response to scantily clad baristas, the Spokane Valley City Council
is considering an ordinance
that
would dictate a dress code in public places while in the city of Spokane
Valley. The dress code requires private body parts to be covered.
Violations would be considered a misdemeanor and could incur a fine up
to $1000 or 90 days imprisonment.

On November 12th, the city council voted in favor of this ordinance (the
unlawful public exposure ordinance). It will be read again for further
approval on November 26.

See news reports from

* The Spokesman Review

* KTVB

* KXLY

* KHQ

* KREM

Within this ordinance it states –
public nudity and semi-nudity can have a negative impact on the
community, including exposure to minors; and

The definitions in the ordinance are interesting.
8.55.010 – Definitions.
Unless the context clearly requires otherwise, the definitions used in
this chapter shall have the following meanings:
“*Expose or exposure*” means to reveal or otherwise render open to view
in a public place.

over or around the shoulders, neck or back, and which is not transparent
or translucent. Body paint, body dye, tattoos, liquid latex whether wet
or dried, or any similar substance applied to the skin surface shall not
be considered opaque covering. Any substance which can be washed off the
skin is not full and opaque covering as required by this chapter.
“*Prohibited body parts*” for purposes of this chapter means exposure of:
– any part of the male or female genitals, or anus; or
– more than one-half of the female breast by area; or
– any part of the areola or nipple of the female breast.
“*Public place*” means an area visible to public view, including any
place in which the general public has a right to be present or view,
whether or not conditioned upon payment of a fee.

This ordinance does exempt “Adult Entertainment”.
