Women in Naturism Weekend

The Women in Naturism Weekend #WINW is a global open house led by Naturist Women at Nudist Resorts & Clubs around the world encouraging women to experience body positive nudism.  The idea of the weekend came from British Naturism, and is being sponsored by AANR, The Naturist Society and Women in Nude Recreation.

Here in the Northwest, two clubs are actively participating in the weekend.

In the Seattle area, the lady SLUGS are hosting a tea party at LARC on June 5.   Little sandwiches and pastries will accompany various types of tea.   Kathy Blanchard, a SLUG who is frequently featured in ‘N’ Magazine, will be demonstrating some of her professional expertise about Bonzai. There will be supplies for making fascinators, frilly hair decorations.   The day will include a walk in the park with the naturalist naturist, a  hypnotic relaxation exercise and an opportunity for the ladies to share how they feel about nudism and to ask and answer questions.    During this discussion, there will be an alternative activity available for the guys so they won’t feel too excluded.

In the Northern Idaho area, Sun Meadow is hosting several women’s tournaments over the weekend.  On Saturday morning, there will be a Women’s Frisbee Golf Scramble (a woman must captain the team).  In the afternoon, there will be a Women’s Boccie Tournament.  On Sunday, Sun Meadow will host a Hand and Foot Tournament .

At both events, grounds fees are waived for women.   Please come and please invite your friends, especially your women friends who may be shy, but are interested in finding out why we like hanging out in our birthday suits..

Northwest Folklife is still Coming

Northwest Folklife is a four day music festival in Seattle Center.  AANR-NW is one of the sponsors and has a booth along the road between the fountain and Key Arena.  So, if you are a member of a club, please be sure to get your brochures and pictures to the booth.  if you want to come by the booth and help out, please do.  It is a lot of fun getting to know people.  You get to practice your ’30 second elevator speech’ about why you are a nudist.  I always learn something new about myself.  Or just stop by and say hi.

        AANR By-Law Amendments

        by Karen Lahey

There are four bylaw amendments.  These are my interpretations of them.

        1.   A “yes” vote on this motion would move the province of Ontario, Canada, to the Eastern Region.   A “no” vote would support leaving this Section of the Bylaws as it is currently.  This bylaw moves the clubs in the province of Ontario from AANR-Midwest to AANR-East.  The rationale for this bylaw is that the clubs are physically closer to AANR East.  The  PRO statement was written by the president of AANR East.  There is no CON statement.
        2. A “yes” vote on this motion would support specifying that only a plurality (as opposed to a majority) is required in selecting a convention site.  A “no” vote would support leaving this Section of the Bylaws as it is currently.  This bylaw will change how conventions will be voted on.  For example, suppose three clubs are bidding for an election,   Club A gets 45% of the votes, Club B gets  35% of the votes and Club C gets 20% of the votes.  Currently, there would have to be a revote until a compromise could be reached and one of the clubs received more than 50% of the vote.  This amendment would change it so that Club A would be awarded the convention after the first vote.
        3. A “yes” vote on this motion would support changing the existing wording regarding tie votes and when the president is allowed to vote.  A “no” vote would support leaving these sections as they are currently.  This change allows the president to cast a ballot when it would affect the result rather than just in the case of a tie.   For example, the president’s vote could force a tie.   This change in wording brings our ruling documents into accordance with Robert’s Rules or Order.
        4. A “yes” vote on this motion would support the appointment of an interim Executive Director in the event of a vacancy.  A “no” vote would support leaving this Section of the Bylaws as it is currently. This bylaw will allow a sitting president to appoint an interim executive director when necessary.  Currently, the president must take on the responsibilities of both the executive director and the president.

Staten Island High School Art Students Told to Clothe their Anti-Rape Artwork

Susan E. Wagner High School in Staten Island, NY, censored students’ art work that was speaking out against our rape culture simply because it included photographs of the nude female back.   In doing so, an online petition against this censorship was started that is still gathering support at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/spreading-feminism-in-wagner/ .

For more information about the display and its censorship, see http://ncac.org/letters/staten-island-high-school-art-students-told-to-clothe-their-anti-rape-artwork

July Rooster Rock/Sauvie Island Beach Clean-ups

The weather for both Saturday and Sunday this week is expected to be warm.  Be sure to bring a hat and sunscreen and perhaps a water bottle.  We will have cold water and sugar free lemonade.  See below for more info!

AANR-NW has continued to be beach adopters for the two legal nude beaches in Oregon as well as Rooster Rock State Park.  As such, two beach litter clean-ups must be scheduled each year to fulfill the agreement.  For a few years, the water was extremely high for the first one, to the point that even the trails were under water.  This year, the events have been scheduled later in the summer so that there is absolutely no chance of that happening.
The first beach clean-up will be on Saturday, July 30 at 10:00 a.m. at Rooster Rock State Park.  This is a clothing optional event, if you are cleaning in the nude area. It is highly suggested that you wear shoes and sun screen. Hats are also recommended if it is very bright.  Bring work gloves if you have them.  All tools and clean-up bags will be furnished.  We will be working with the Rooster Rock park staff. The Park Ranger Supervisor will have a list of projects that includes light to heavy work. Volunteers do not have to pay the day use fee.  Tell the person in the registration booth that you are there for the clean-up. When registering, you will receive a card to put in your window.  Meet at the east end of the parking lot near the restrooms.   This should not last longer than around three hours, and will be followed by a hot dog barbeque.  AANR-NW will provide cold water, sugar free lemonade, hot dogs, buns and trimmings and some dessert snacks.   Please do not  leave any items visible in your car. The only restrooms accessible from the nude beach are located near the parking area.

Sunday, July 31 – Sauvie Island-Collins Beach – clean-up at 1:00 p.m. – A parking pass is usually required.  SOLVE again was able to get us some free day-of-event passes for those that volunteer.  Contact GAT@aanr-nw.org to get one in a pdf format!  Restrooms are close and located in the parking area. We will concentrate our efforts on the gravel road parking area and litter sweeps of the beach area. Meet on the beach near the second nude beach opening.   A hot dog barbeque and potluck will be held at around 3:30 p.m.  Contact gat@aanr-nw.org  for further details on these events and on how to get a Collins Beach parking pass.

There will be a repeat of the clean-ups on September 24 and 25 to fulfill the agreement for the year.

The Nude News will publish any reasonably sized statements from any of the candidates for AANR office in one of the next few week’s issues, as well as explanations of the proposed legislation, so that we can all make informed voting decisions.

But, please take the time to vote.  It will be as simple as logging into the voting site and pushing a few buttons.  Or filling in a ballot and mailing it.   Easy to do.  Worth the effort.  The voter’s guide for this election is at http://www.aanr.com/blog/welcome-to-the-2016-aanr-voters-guide/.
                  ===========================================================

Vote for Karen Lahey for Club Trustee

I am running in one of the two contests that have competitions in this year’s AANR election and I ask for your vote.  Please also pass on this information and ask your friends to vote for me as well.

I am running for Club Trustee for club tiers 6-7.  Club Trustees are elected at large across all of the regions and represent clubs of different sizes.  Tiers 6 and 7 are the two smallest tiers.  I have served as the AANR Northwest President for the last four years, the maximum allowed.  While president, I had the privilege to work with the AANR board on several committees as well as participating in the AANR board meetings and conventions.  I have become familiar with the AANR officers and the other trustees, as well as getting to know the presidents in all of the other regions.  I know that I can work effectively with our board and contribute to AANR in many concrete ways.

                  1. I have ideas that I want AANR to explore:  I would like to find ways for us to be able to let all members renew automatically.  It is much too easy to forget to renew.  I would like to find a way to count all AANR members in new clubs towards their minimum counts in order to make it easier to get new clubs started.  Being able to facilitate new clubs would give AANR a way to better serve nudists in underserved areas. I would like us to simplify our membership strata so that it costs our office less time in keeping our data updated.
                  2. Having been a software developer since 1972, I have significant technical skills that I am always wiling to donate to AANR.  For example, I am the author of the first AANR Android App,
                  3. I have many years experience collaborating on teams and exploring new ways to improve collaboration.
                  4. .I am a finisher.  When I take on a task, I follow through and get the job done.  One example is this newsletter that you are reading.  I am the person that has been writing and publishing the Nude News for the last several years.

I have a website that has my resume and my candidates statement.  It can be found at http://www.laheyfamily.org/karen

Vote for Brenda Spangler for Club Trustee

Hello to those of you in the Northwest.  My name is Brenda Spangler and I am running for Club Trustee for a final term. I would like to have your votes and encourage all of you to vote.  I feel we have a good board and I am pleased to have Karen Lahey running for trustee.  Thank you for your vote.

                    AANR Election Time

With your May bulletin, you will get your AANR ballot with instructions on how to vote.  To be eligible to vote, you must have been an AANR member on March 31st of this year.

All of our incumbent officers are running unopposed.  Our regional trustee, Kathy Smith, is also running unopposed.  However, there are several contested elections: Group 4 Club Trustee and  Group 6/7 Club Trustees.   There are also four motions to amend the bylaws.

Two years ago, the Northwest had the largest turnout of all of the regions for the election, just over 10%.  While that is in keeping with other membership organizations, we can do better.  This year, let’s redouble our efforts and make a difference.  (To be transparent, I’m in one of those contested elections and would like to see lots of voting happening).

The voter’s guide for this election is at http://www.aanr.com/blog/welcome-to-the-2016-aanr-voters-guide/.

                    AANR-NW Board Meeting

Several important legislation changes were decided at the Spring AANR-NW Board meeting at Sun Meadow earlier in April.

                    1. There will no longer be a convention fee charged for attendees to conventions.
                    2. From now on, there is no longer a minimum length of time required before a scholarship can be applied for. However, the length of AANR membership of the student’s parent (or the student), will be considered during scholarship evaluation.

In addition to having a great time, the board made changes to be responsive to the needs of our membership.

A Sad Goodbye to Darrel Brown

It is with a very sad heart we say good bye to our friend Darrel Brown, who passed last week after suffering an extended illness.
Darrell was a beloved participant at both AANR-NW and AANR meetings.  He is a member of the AANR-NW Hall of Fame and was an AANR-NW Man of the Year.    As well as serving as the AANR Finance Chair, he served as both the AANR-NW Treasurer and AANR-NW Finance Chair for many years.
Darrel’s wife, Pat, is a past president of AANR.  Our thoughts are with her.
                      Darrel will be missed.

                      Rooster Rock Family Tree Planting

AANR-NW adopted Rooster Rock State Park through the Oregon State Park Adopt-A-Park program. AANR-NW invites you to participate in this family tree planting event. This is a clothing required event as the Columbia River is too high to work at the nude beach.  We will be planting trees in the textile portion of the park.
Usually the weather at this event has us appreciating clothing!  Volunteers are not charged park entrance fees.  Simply follow the signs once entering the park.

                      • What: Earth Day Tree Planting at Rooster Rock State Park
                      • Where: On I-84 East of Troutdale take exit #25
                      • When: April 23th 9 am- 1 pm

Lava Nursery, located in Parkdale, Oregon, generously continued their donation of 400 tree seedlings. We value their contribution and solicit your help to get them planted. We work in partnership with Oregon State Park staff, Sierra Club members, Scouts, SOLV IT, and local community members.
Please wear weather appropriate clothing to this rain or shine event. Park tools are limited. We have been asked to bring garden planting tools, 5 gallon bucket, gloves, and drinking water. However, no tools or experience are required.  Work an hour or the entire allotted time.

                      See http://www.solveoregon.org/get-involved/events/rooster-rock-earth-day-tree-planting for more information.

Join in the fun  — AANR-NW Spring Board Meeting

Meetings are not everyone’s idea of fun.  And that’s OK.  But getting to know the people that come to the meetings can be.  You don’t have to sit in the meetings, but you are certainly welcome to be part of the meetings.  The upcoming board meeting is at Sun Meadow and there are many other fun things do to while the rest of us are in meetings.  In the evening, the entertainment will be stellar.

During a typical AANR-NW board meeting weekend,  we reconnect with friends.  Even during the actual meetings, we laugh a lot.  For example, will I be able to get through the introductions without making a mistake?  While we don’t always agree, our discussions and forums on Saturday are the time that we usually come to consensus on what the group wants.  We respect one another and it shows.  Actual votes happen on Sunday.

If you can’t make it for the Spring Board meeting on April 8-10, come for the AANR-NW Convention at Sun Meadow in July.  It follows the week after the “Skin to the Wind” Festival July 12-17. http://www.sunmeadow.org..  And for the second time in a row, the AANR convention is in our region.  In August, it will be at the Willamettans. , August 8-15, 2016.  http://willamettans.com/2016-Convention.html

                      Mazo Beach Closed

Sad News in Wisconsin.  Mazomanie Beach, familiarly known as Mazo Beach, has been a favorite nude beach in Southwestern Wisconsin since the 1950s.  The DNR closed the beach in early March.  Supporters of the beach have an informative website at https://friendsofmazobeach.wordpress.com/.  The loss of this beach is felt greatly by the Nudist community.  Public comment is being sought.

Great News from the Oregon Department of Forestry

On Wednesday, March 9, the Oregon Department of Forestry met to decide on the adoption of the new rules being proposed for forest lands. At the recommendation of the ODF Policy Analyst Just Butteris, they decided to not adopt the anti-nudity rule changes that had been proposed for designated areas in the state forest. Mr. Butteris noted that, in addition to the oral testimony and discussion at the March meeting, he had received 175 written submissions from the public objecting to those rule changes. He did not receive any submissions that supported the rule changes. There were many other rules under consideration. No other subject had more than 9 comments.

The response of the Nudist community made a difference. When we work together, we can be heard.

It is time to do a happy dance!!!!

St. Patrick Dinner & Dance at Sun Meadow March 19

Sun Meadow is holding their St. Patrick Dinner and Dance this weekend, Saturday, March 19, as listed in the previous issue of the NW Nude News and on the Sun Meadow web site. Due to earlier press times, it had been listed incorrectly in the February NW NudeScene (the insert delivered with the AANR Bulletin) as March 12. It’s always a good idea to check club websites for updates and details about events listed here or in the NudeScene. The links on the calendar items here should connect directly to those sites.

                        New AANR Executive Director

AANR has hired a new Executive Director.  Here is his first week’s report.

                        by Name Removed by Request
                        WEEK ONE
What an exciting week it has been as AANR’s new executive director! Several people had used the phrase “like drinking from a firehose” when describing what to expect, and most of you can certainly relate to that thought as you think back to starting a new job, business opportunity, or relationship. The irony is that while beginning such an important new venture can feel daunting, it is also filled with excited anticipation, and that is the best way for me to describe my first week in the AANR office.

I can’t say enough about AANR’s awesome staff. Although they crammed my poor head with volumes of information (the firehose), they also made me feel warmly welcomed and proud to be a part of the team (the refreshing drink). And that sentiment also goes to the many people in our AANR family who have already reached out to welcome me and wish me their best. I thank you all for your confidence and trust.
The main thought that I want to convey in my first weekly report is that I am here for you. I am here to listen, to support, to offer advice and creativity, and to generally make AANR work for you as you spread the word about wholesome and fun nude recreation in your own spheres of influence. Together, we are going to take AANR and nude recreation into the future by showing people today how they can enjoy freedom, fun, and a family community. I am dedicated to doing whatever it takes to see AANR succeed in its mission, and I am looking forward to some of our best years ahead. Are you ready? I am. Let’s go!

                        Hurry! Hurry!  Deadlines are Looming!

With the exception of a small, hardworking staff, all of the work that AANR does is done by volunteers.  One good way that we have to reward them is with our honor awards.  Too often, no awards are given, because no one takes the time to nominate anyone.  The deadlines for Hall of Fame, Man and Woman of the Year is March 15.  That is in less than two weeks.  So do it NOW.

You can find out more information and submit your nominations online at  Hall of Fame or  Man/Woman of the Year. This information is in the members area of the website.  The password can be found on the calendar page of the Nudescene.  Or you can email president@aanr-nw.org to get it if you need it.

The Hall of Fame Award is the highest honor the region can award a member. It is based on service of a magnitude above average to AANR, AANR Northwest and nudism. It is not intended to recognize club service unless such service was of direct benefit to AANR and AANR Northwest. Nominees must have ten years continuous membership in AANR, with a minimum of five years in AANR Northwest. The deadline for submitting a nomination is March 15.

The Man/Woman of the Year award is given to a man and to a woman for their contribution in promoting and/or furthering nudism at the regional level during the previous calendar year. Recipients will be presented with
plaques at the AANR Northwest convention. Nominees must be AANR Northwest members but need
not be members of the club that nominates them.

                        Northwest Nominations

AANR-NW will be electing new officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) at the 2016 AANR Northwest Region convention by vote of attending delegates. The convention will be held in July at Sun Meadow Resort in Idaho. The AANR-NW Nominations Committee is actively seeking qualified candidates for these positions. Can you please get the word out to your club members, using and/or disseminating the attachments as appropriate for your club. This is an opportunity for your club to meaningfully participate in AANR-NW leadership by providing qualified nominees for the AANR-NW officer positions. Please contact me by email at “nominations-chair@aanr-nw.org” if you have any questions or need additional information.

Now is the time to tell the Oregon Dept. of Forestry what you think!

During the month of January, there have been several email pleas asking for your help in convincing the Oregon Department of Forestry to not forbid nudity in state forests.  The deadline is approaching quickly.  Please act now if you haven’t already.  Comments need to be received by February 8th.  That is next Monday.  If you are going to mail a letter in, please send it off today.  If you are going to send an email, please don’t put it off.   The discussion about these proposed rules can be found in the special alert that was sent out to this list (Subject: ALERT: Proposed New Rules for Nudity on Oregon State Forestry Lands ) and archived at https://www.aanr-nw.org/?p=1808936 .  If you can’t find it or need more information, please contact Karen Lahey..

What do you want from AANR?

I will be traveling to the AANR Winter Board Meeting at Cypress Cove later this month (February 19-20).  At that meeting, the presidents and trustees from across the organization discuss ideas both on the agenda and not on the agenda.  If you are in Florida then, you should come to the meetings.  One of the topics that has been discussed is finding out what members want from AANR.  So my question for you is “What do you want from AANR?”  Send what you think to president@aanr-nw.org,  I would really appreciate your feedback.
