** Richard Patterson – Rest in Peace

AANR-Northwest Regional Board Member for The Willamettans Richard Patterson passed away recently after a short battle with cancer. In the early nineties, he was very beneficial in raising funds for a food bank in Sonoma County, CA called Food For Thought. He owned and ran his own business for 35 years and was hands on all aspects of the business: hiring and firing employees, buying merchandise, promoting sales, and dealing with customers.
Richard was an AANR member for seven years and became very passionate for the organization; He believed he had helped in making people more aware of the benefits that AANR has to offer, especially younger people. Richard was an Activities Chair for the Willamettans for six years. Richard served as the convention chair for the AANR Convention in 2016 and again for the AANR Northwest Convention in 2017, among his many volunteer efforts. He represented the Willamettans on the AANR-NW regional board for the past several years. He was a candidate in the 2018 AANR election for AANR-NW regional Trustee, which he narrowly lost. He was a tireless volunteer. He leaves behind his husband George Rich, also a contributing volunteer and member of the Willamettans.
A Celebration of Life to celebrate the life of Richard Patterson Jr. (October 27, 1949 – March 9, 2019) will be held. Please join George Rich at the Fireside/Bar at The Willamettans on Saturday, May 4, 2019 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. No dress code – come dressed or not dressed. Please bring your favorite hors d’oeuvre. Grounds fees will apply to non-members, unless waived for this event.

** Nudeprov Canceled

We received the following notice from the Pocket Theater on Friday concerning their monthly Nudeprov shows.

I’m sad to report that in compliance with Washington State liquor law, the Pocket is forced to cancel Nudeprov this Sunday as well as all upcoming Nudeprov shows at the Pocket.

It was my understanding that since we did not allow alcoholic beverages into the theater during the performance that we were in compliance with Washington State law, but after a conversation with an enforcement officer this afternoon I have been informed that is not the case. A complaint was filed and we received a verbal warning referencing WAC 314-11-050:

“(1) Licensees may not allow, permit, or encourage employees (including him or herself) to: (a) Be unclothed or in such attire, costume, or clothing as to expose to view any portion of the breast below the top of the areola or of any portion of the pubic hair, anus, cleft of the buttocks, vulva, or genitals. (2) Licensees may not allow, permit, or encourage any person (including him or herself) on the licensed premises to: (a) Perform acts of or acts which simulate, or use artificial devices or inanimate objects which depict; • The displaying of the pubic hair, anus, vulva, or genitals.”

All tickets will be refunded this afternoon.

I’m sincerely sorry. I feel sad and frustrated at the regressive and arbitrary nature of the law, and frankly that the description of the law is more lewd than Nudeprov ever was. (And even so, it’s incredibly puritanical and absurd to prohibit nude performances for consenting adults even the content is sexual in nature.) You all are wonderful people and it was a pleasure hosting you at the Pocket. I’m working with the producers of the show to find a suitable venue for the future (if you know of ADA accessible venues ranging from 50-100 seats that do NOT have a liquor license please don’t hesitate to reach out). ** AANR-NW Membership – Call To Action

AANR-NW can be proud of volunteer contributions addressing recent anti-nudity ordinances in Washington.

Volunteers hearing about the proposed ordinances on the news immediately went into action by contacting appropriate Government Affairs volunteers. AANR Legal Counsel was informed and solicited for support and assistance. Hours of computer research were completed, phone calls made, letters written and public testimony drafted. Volunteers were on standby to travel to city council meetings if needed.

While we can celebrate the way volunteers responded we were missing a huge opportunity. AANR Executive Director and Legal Counsel Erich Schuttauf recently shared “don’t wait until you’re thirsty to dig a well.” What does this actually mean? We must be prepared with the knowledge to act and step up when needed.

Recently it became obvious we need help and support from our membership. The Lacey, WA, City Council proposed a serious Barista ordinance that could potentially impact nude recreation. KOMO news along with several other media resources reported on the topic. AANR-GAT volunteer email inboxes should have been flooded with reports from members. That was not the case. A timely response is critical in situations like this.

How can you as an AANR member be part of protecting nude recreation? Join the Government Affairs team. When you hear of any media reports that may have a negative or positive impact on nude recreation, report it. Never assume that others will do so. If you find yourself doubting whether the report is of value, let others decide. Add officers@aanr-nw.org (mailto:) and chairs@aanr-nw.org to your contact list to make reporting easier and faster. ** Willies closed due to heavy snow, power out and trees down

Report from the club – The heavy snowstorm a few days ago has hit The Willamettans (aanr-nw.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cc7f511b492b87d55fd7619fb&id=4045aa6802&e=84c965e783) very heavily. It was first reported that there is no power or access in or out of the club. Multiple trees are down around the club and along Parsons Creek. Three trees hit one trailer, with additional trees down and one severing the power to the septic system.

As always, members on grounds are working together. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. One member has cleared the main roads around the grounds so that members can stay in contact with one another. Several have sought shelter at a member’s place and the warmth of her wood stove. Internet at the club is down but those making it into town are updating as possible.

This is likely not the end of the damage. After five more inches last night, snow is at 24 inches. Willies power will be down probably 8 to 10 days. Some residents are staying in town, but hotels are now full. It seems club buildings escaped damage thus far. Impact on individual sites probably won’t be known for a while.

** March 2 Hidden Springs Indoor Nude Recreation Night

84 degree lap pool, 2 hot tubs, 2 saunas, 2 steam rooms, 2 coed locker rooms plus NEWLY added to our rental – 90 degree large conversation pool – 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

1.) This is a Family Friendly event – there will be non-nudist life guards, but usage of the facilities will be done in the nude.

2.) Available facilities : 90 degree large conversation pool, 25 yard lap pool, 6 lanes 3’6” – 11’6” deep 82 – 84 degrees (some lane ropes will be removed for general pool usage), two saunas, two hot tubs, two steam rooms, two dressing rooms with combination lockers (the state health department restricts usage of saunas, steam rooms, or hot tubs to individuals who are ages 14 and older).

3.) There is a top limit of 50 pre-registered, pre-paid attendees, who will be required to show ID upon entrance. No weapons allowed (including pocket knives) on premises.

4.) Recommendation of two towels per attendee – one for sitting on in sauna or steam room, one for drying off.

5.) Those with disabilities barring usage of the facilities that are accompanying paid attendees and parents with very young children not using the facilities must also preregister and present ID and will be admitted without charge and are welcome to stay in the dressing room lounges or can sit in the bleachers on the pool deck.

6.) Youth Pool Requirements
• Youth age 6 and under must have a 16 year old or older in the water within arm’s reach.
• Youth ages 7-12 must have a 16 year old or older remain on the pool deck while they are in the pool.
• Youth ages 13+ may be in the pool without a parent or guardian directly on the pool deck.

There is a required ratio of not less than one parent/guardian for every five children in pool.

COST: 18 years or older – $20 with proof of AANR or TNS membership, $25 for general adult admission with no proof of organization membership, $10 children under 18 with accompanying registered parent(s). NOTE – we have a benefactor willing to pay children’s cost for this event – book early to be sure to get this benefit.

7.) To save on club costs, each person attending must sign a one-time liability waiver either in advance or at the door.

** Protester Jailed for Exposing Breast in Virginia

Michelle Sutherland, dressed in costume as Virtus (Virtue), a figure on the Virginia state seal, was arrested while advocating for passage of the Equal Rights Amendment and initially held without bail in Virginia. After three days, her lawyer was able to secure her release from jail. Her arrest and confinement was for a single count of misdemeanor indecent exposure. It still stands. ** Terwilliger Hot Springs-Update

The Eugene Register-Guard reported that Terwilliger Hot Springs, a nudist treasure because they are legally sanctioned as clothing optional, may open to the public late 2019.

The springs were closed for seven months in 2018 due to debris from a massive landslide blocking the easiest route to the springs. The springs were reopened once huge rocks were removed from the road in July. A short time later, August 19, the Terwilliger Fire started within a mile of the springs.

A rockslide combined with a 11,500 acre fire shut down the hot springs. Mckenzie River District Ranger Darren Cross reported that 30,000 people per year visit and generate $200,000 in day use and annual permit fees. Additional loss of income from nearby campgrounds hot spring visitors use adds to the financial loss.

A few neighbors who don’t like even concealed nudity in their neighborhood are trying to force Everett House to close. Their latest tactic is to make the city of Portland to revoke the center’s business permit, which requires 30 parking spaces. These spaces were lost due to new building construction. This nude-positive business can be a step for some to join the nudist community in Oregon. Three new members of a NW non-landed club are also regular visitors to the Everett House. Reporters for local papers have written articles describing their first nude experience there as “magical.”
On a recent visit to Everett House, employees were optimistic about their chances to stay open. Many visitors asked about how they could help keep the place open. It was great to hear people talk about how much the place has meant to them and their overall well-being.
But the future is very uncertain at this point. Nudists are encouraged to do what you can to help.

Other ways to show support are: Go there! Do it just for the experience of something different. A very popular option is the massage sandwich, where people soak first, then get a massage from a trained massage therapist, and afterwards soak again. If you want to make a complete night of it, there are several nice restaurants and a movie theater within walking distance.
Another option: Tell friends about Everett House. If they’re not nudists, this could be a great opportunity for them to try social nudity.

** Nudist Restaurant in Paris Closes

Fifteen months ago, O’naturel (aanr-nw.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cc7f511b492b87d55fd7619fb&id=2b2405cd38&e=84c965e783) opened its doors to nudists, giving them the opportunity to dine in the all together. Two non-nudist brothers, Mike and Stéphane Saada, hoped to cash in on the growing popularity of nudism in France. Unfortunately, they have lacked enough business to continue and the restaurant will close on February 16. Why is becoming an AANR member important to Government Affairs (GAT)? (While the list is long these are my prioritized top three reasons.
1. Membership dues finance Government Affairs. On a national level GAT Chairs have access to a service that raises our awareness to potential pieces of legislation that would negatively or positively impact nude recreation. A few examples in proposed legislation can be anti-nude legislation, and zoning or liquor laws that impact resorts/clubs or recreating on private property. AANR volunteers in every region are monitoring legislation from a service purchased with membership dues. Monitoring legislation is only one of the many volunteer job descriptions.
2. Members provide a wide base of volunteer skills necessary for GAT to be successful.
3. The larger our membership the louder our voice when speaking with or to our governmental officials.

** AUNaturel – The Nude in the 21st Century Art Exhibition

The 13th annual international juried exhibit Au Naturel: The Nude in the 21st Century will be on display from January 14 through March 24, 2019 at Clatsop Community College’s Royal Nebeker Art Gallery located at 1799 Lexington Avenue, Astoria, OR. Gallery hours are from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and Saturdays from 11:00
a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The gallery is open on Sundays and holidays by appointment only. If the rules from last year are the same for this year, it will be free and open to the public. The 2019 press release is not yet out, but should be here soon:

On September 9^th, Bare Mountain Retreat (aanr-nw.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cc7f511b492b87d55fd7619fb&id=d33e5a0218&e=84c965e783) (Bare Backers of Idaho) held their first nude fun run. Because the Bare Mountain Retreat nudist club is built on the side of a mountain, they decided to call their run “Streak to the Peak”.

One of the organizers thought that a description of their process, description of the race and plans for the future might be interesting reading for AANR-NW members.

Streak To The Peak
How one club pulled off the most challenging nude race in America

In 2005 my wife and I became members of Bare Mountain Retreat (aanr-nw.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cc7f511b492b87d55fd7619fb&id=d65cedd8cd&e=84c965e783) , an Idaho nudist club, and it changed our lives. Now retired, we spend the summer months at our cabin at Bare Mountain Retreat and the winter months at our home in a Palm Desert California tennis community. We both agree that the months we spend at Bare Mountain are the best and were it not for the snowy Idaho winters we would live there full-time.

When we joined the club, the daytime activities centered around the pool, especially the water volleyball, which our members often play all day long and sometimes into the night. We don’t hold to the “official” volleyball rules but a hybrid that we have worked out over the years. It’s said to be the most fun social activity that you can do with your clothes off, and nearly all our members joyfully participate.

The club had also developed a short trail, a ½ mile uphill grind to an interesting granite formation called Monkey Rock. Only a few members ever attempted the climb as it is very strenuous, however there were a handful of us that enjoyed the hike, and we could see that with a lot of work, our 130 hillside acres had the raw potential to become a serious nude hiking Mecca. Our hillside topography has its advantages and disadvantages. Disadvantages are that to hike here one needs to be in fairly good shape, the other disadvantage is that building trails on steep hillsides is very difficult. However, the positives are that hiking up the hillsides and ridge lines offer beautiful views of the forested canyons below and spectacular vistas of nearby Lucky Peak Lake. Over the next few years we picked away at the trails, doing some minor improvements, but mostly just bushwhacking around on the hillsides. But about seven years ago one member, Trail Master Gary, became very serious about
our trails and began to work tirelessly to improve and expand our trail system. Gary’s efforts inspired some of the rest of us to help, and under his direction we have now developed over five miles of world class mountain trails that are a joy to hike on.

A few years back I was thinking about traveling to Spokane, Washington, to participate in the Bare Buns Fun Run at Kaniksu Ranch Nudist Club, and it got me to thinking… if other clubs can sponsor successful fun runs why couldn’t Bare Mountain? I knew that we would have to continue improving and expanding our trails, and due to our hilly topography, we would have to design a way to route the course with safety in mind. But it seemed doable, so I recruited several members who are avid runners and hikers to see if we could come up with a workable plan.

We realized that the only way that a race could be safely run on our trails would be to start at the clubhouse at the bottom of the hill and race to the finish line at the top of the mountain. Racing back down the mountain would expose the runners to possible injury which we wanted to avoid that at all costs. So, over the years, with our race in mind, we developed our course, 4K in length, with a 1200-foot elevation gain. It’s a course that we are very proud of and we couldn’t think of a better name than “Streak to the Peak”. We have been told by participants of other runs that it is the most challenging nude fun run in the country.

We scheduled our inaugural race on Sunday, September 9th, the weekend after Labor Day. We wanted to start small to work out the bugs, so we limited the field to 40 runners. We ended up with a total of 38 entrants, 20 club members and 18 visitors. Most of the visitors were not nudists, and had never run a nude race before, but ended up being very enthusiastic nude participants. There were 12 women and 26 men. The entry fee of $30.00 covered the race entry, official race sarong (in lieu of a t-shirt), food and prizes.

The week before race day the word got out to the general public. Our event was causing quite a stir in the neighboring city of Boise. As it was the first nude race in the area, one local radio station made it their favorite topic of conversation. The local NBC-TV affiliate practically begged us to allow them to cover the race… we politely declined.

As the “Streak to the Peak” weekend approached we were all a bit nervous, and we wanted to make sure that everything came off perfectly, but the club members were ready and eager to do whatever was needed to make the event a success.

The festivities started out on Saturday night, as all the participants and their support teams were hosted to a delicious pre-race carbo-loading spaghetti dinner with all the trimmings. On Sunday morning as the participants started arriving, they were directed to the parking areas and then to the registration deck where they received their race packet and inaugural “Streak to the Peak” sarong. Everyone was tagged with a race number. The aid station personnel were sent off to their stations with their water, first aid supplies and walkie talkies. Everyone waited eagerly for the starting gun at 9:45am.

The weather at start time was blue skies and 63 degrees, perfect for a nude race. I gave a pre-race talk describing the topography to those new to the trail and advised the runners to “keep some gas in their tank for the final half mile, which features the steepest pitch on the course, a brutal climb which we now call “Hero Hill”. At 9:45 the horn sounded, and the runners started off, some sprinting, most fast hiking. Our club members, and the runners’ support teams, shouted encouragement. Along the route our members manning the four aid stations handed out water as the runners passed by.

Twenty-six minutes, twenty-four seconds later, our own Bare Mountain member Steve G crossed the finish line and took gold. Men’s Silver and Bronze went to elite visiting runners from Boise. In the woman’s division, Bare Mountain members swept gold, silver and bronze. There were those who did not run the course but opted to hike it and took over an hour to finish, but they were cheered on as enthusiastically as the elite runners. At the award ceremony we handed out the medals as all the runners proudly displayed their “Streak to the Peak” sarongs.

We followed the award ceremony with a lunch of BBQ pulled chicken & pork sliders, salads and fruit. We then hit the pool for water volleyball and played until we were all exhausted.

It was wonderful to see the club members pitch in. To a person, everyone helped to make it a success. Some helped by greeting visitors and directing them to the parking, others helped with registration and drawing race numbers on the runners’ arms, members manned aid stations, marked time at the finish, prepared the excellent food and, as we are so well known for, were wonderful ambassadors of friendship and fun. By the end of the day, four of the visiting couples were requesting applications and information on how to join the club.

So what next? We are already planning on how to improve the race for 2019. We may possibly lengthen the race to 5K by cutting a new trail across the top of the ridge for more scenic vistas. We also plan to expand the entrants to 80 runners. And we will promote the race to the AANR community so those members who like to travel to fun events like these will have an opportunity to participate.

For me, and especially Trail Master Gary, it’s been lots of work, but it’s been so satisfying to see a dream, begun years ago, take shape, and to help start something that will become an annual event, enjoyed by our nudist as well as textile community, an event which will help put our club on the map as a destination, not only for nudist recreation, but nudist sport as well.

** Glen Eden Flooded

This week, the rains caused the normally dry creek bed that runs through the middle of Glen Eden (aanr-nw.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cc7f511b492b87d55fd7619fb&id=8835b67f1a&e=84c965e783) , a nudist resort in California, to become a raging river of mud, rocks and debris. The attached picture shows how the water and mud came over the banks to flood those two golf carts up to their seats. The second picture is what the tennis courts look like now. It’s a big, BIG mess but thankfully there were no injuries.

Sunday night, November 11 from 6:30 to 9:00 PM (that’s a new starting time for an extra half hour of bare bowling) 6:15 is a good time to arrive. The door may be closed after 7:00. We hope you can attend this fine long-running Portland-area nudist activity. The bowling cost has not increased in years and won’t now. It is $13 per person, in advance, including shoes, if you have an AANR or Naturist Society membership. Others, $15 in advance. At the door, $5 more.

Good News, Everyone! Starting in January Nudeprov will be on the last Sunday of every month for the entirety of 2019!
