GAT at the Willies

Willamettans Government Affairs Team (GAT) Co-Chairs Willi Blair and Shirley Gauthier enjoyed a day tabling near the pool during Sunshine Festival on Labor Day Weekend.

Tabling was a great opportunity to raise awareness concerning the value of  an AANR membership, share recently passed AANR legislation, and promote the Government Affairs Team.

AANR-NW GAT Public Lands Chair Mike Parker recently hosted beach cleanups at Rooster Rock and Suave Island. An added surprise was that we were gifted with beach volunteers stopping by to chat and share their experiences.

Living Waters Spa is closed..

Goodbye, farewell, it's been good, it's been real, it's been real good!

For 16 years we have been the place of rest for 13,000 of you. Now it's our turn. LWS has been sold and will no longer be a hotel. It has been our honor to love on you and be loved by you for all of these years.

We have plans to open a clothing-optional AirB&B at our home, which is one mile north of the spa. Hopefully it will be ready this spring. Updates will be emailed as they become available.

With great love and gratitude to all the staff we've had over the years who helped us create and run the spa AND to all our amazing guests who visited our "more than a vacation" oasis.

Welcome Wandering Bare

AANR-NW welcomes our newest event club to the Northwest, Wandering Bare.  Its founder, Joe Haggerty, has sent us an introduction.

Wandering Bare is fun, it’s also nice, pleasant, relaxing, refreshing, exhilarating, exciting, and enjoyable. We enjoy hiking naked and nude recreation to provide a freeing personal quest, to build a closer bond with nature.  We are a group of like-minded people who enjoy being totally natural, with the warm sun and cool breeze on your entire body. It’s an amazing sensation of total freedom.
 
Wandering Bare invites you to free your inner child! Become closer to nature! Hiking naked through forests, fields, Mountains, and valleys! We’ve hosted Naked Nature Walks at Baskett Slough, Finley, Snag Boat and Ankeny Wildlife Reserves. Wildlife Reserves are a wonderful place for walking naked. They are usually deserted, the people we have met have been friendly and sometimes curious about our group. Our naked walks have always been fun, freeing, and a way to relax and fill your soul with the joys of living.
 
Wandering Bare has also hosted Naked Mountain Biking in the Bend, OR area. Riding 20 incredible miles of naked mountain biking. Feeling triumphant, a little red from the sun and dusty, our adventures have been fantastic. Nobody took a spill, no mechanical problems, just an amazing afternoon.
 
This summer we enjoyed World Naked Gardening Day on May 4th.  We celebrated at DoLittle Pastures Farm in Lebanon, Oregon.  Gardening naked is not only a simple joy, but it also reminds us that we can be honest with who we are as part of this planet and discover a closer bond to mother earth at this family-friendly community event. If getting down and dirty in the garden wasn’t your thing. Wandering the 80 acres of forest and meadows, exploring the rustic but well-marked trails with multiple access points to Crabtree Creek.
Labor Day Weekend at DoLittle Pastures Farm we'll be enjoying Three Days of Clothing Optional Peace, Joy, Pressing Apple cider, Natural Living, Potlucks, and Music. There are several apple trees or bring your favorite apples for pressing. “BYOJ” (Bring Your Own Jug) There will be a potluck lunches and dinners. Then gather in the evening for amusement and merry-making…bring instruments, songs, stories, and obscure talents! “Why gather apples then press them to cider naked?” It’s fun! As nudists, we know doing actives naked always makes it more fun. Joining together we celebrate the freedom of nudism, the victories of summer.
 
Clothing Optional Blueberry Picking will be an annual event. Terra Fluvia Blueberry Farm in Albany, Oregon hosted a day of unlimited picking Willamette Valley’s Oldest and Bluest Blueberries! Our members said it best!
“Fantastic morning picking blueberries. The farm was great and so were the hosts. The swimming hole was perfect for skinny dipping was a nice cool off after berry picking. Thanks again.”  “Fun morning, peaceful setting, yummy berries, nice people. Thanks again” “Excellent Event, great blueberries, peaceful location. Several people did go for a swim in the river. One of our favorite naturist get togethers yet.”
 
Wandering Bare is not judgmental! We are open to everybody who enjoys nude recreation, whatever your shape or size. We are all made from the same star-stuff, you are welcome. Nudists are the most friendly and open-minded people you will ever meet. Our goal is to provide a relaxing and safe environment where all participants can feel comfortable to experience the joy of being a nudist in our great outdoors. Just like what GOD intended: “Hang out in a garden with a bunch of nudists”. Before that thing with the apple.

Nude Beach Clean-ups Set for
August 24 and 25 and September 21 and 22:

Saturday, August 24 and Saturday, September 21 at 10:00 a.m. at Rooster Rock State Park. This is a clothing optional event, if you are cleaning in the nude area. It is highly suggested that you wear foot coverings and sun screen. Hats are also recommended if it is very bright. Bring work gloves if you have them. All tools and clean-up bags will be furnished.  We will be working with the Rooster Rock park staff. The Park Ranger Supervisor will have a list of projects that includes light to heavy work.  On-line sign-up opportunities are here:

Contact the public lands coordinator for info below.  Restrooms are close and located in the parking area. We will concentrate our efforts on the gravel road parking area and litter sweeps of the beach area. Meet on the beach near the third beach opening.   Those cleaning the parking area must remain clothed. A hot dog barbeque and potluck will be held at around 3:30 p.m. Contact publiclands@aanr-nw.org for an e-mailed Collins beach parking pass or further details on these events . Be sure to bring gardening work gloves (if you have them), a hat and sunscreen and perhaps a water bottle. As mentioned, we will have cold water and sugar free lemonade.  On-line sign-up opportunities are here:

Nude Beach Clean-ups Set for
August 24 and 25 and September 21 and 22:

AANR-NW has continued to be beach adopters for the two legal nude beaches in Oregon as well as Rooster Rock State Park itself. As such, two beach litter clean-ups must be scheduled each year to fulfill the agreement.  For a few years, the water was extremely high for the first one, to the point that even the trails were under water. We have been told the water  is down and the beaches will be clear.  We will be coordinating with Oregon State Parks, Oregon Fish and Wildlife and SOLVE on these clean-ups. SOLVE on-line sign-ups are below or sign-in at the event.

Saturday, August 24 and Saturday, September 21 at 10:00 a.m. at Rooster Rock State Park. This is a clothing optional event, if you are cleaning in the nude area. Volunteers do not have to pay the day use fee. Tell the person in the registration booth that you are there for the clean-up. When registering, you may receive a card to put in your window. Meet at the east end of the parking lot near the restrooms.  The clean-up should not last longer than around three hours, and will be followed by a hot dog barbeque.  AANR-NW will provide cold water, sugar free lemonade, hot dogs, buns and trimmings and some other snacks.  Please do not leave any items visible in your car. The only restrooms accessible from the nude beach are located near the parking area.  Unfortunately, the Columbia Gorge Express bus to Rooster Rock does not leave until 10:30 a.m.

The New Terra Cotta Nude Resort is CLOSED

The New Terra Cotta Nude Resort is CLOSED. It will NOT be nudist in the future.
Becaue of illness, there was a quick sale of the resort.  The deal was financed and it was closed on Wednesday August 7th.
Anyone that had a reservation is cancelled. The past owners have tried to contact as many people as possible with reservations to let them know the resort is closed. However, not everyone was contacted. If you have questions feel free to contact John at 1-253-588-0470
 

Hulu's Shrill is Seeking Nude Bikers for Filming in Portland

The Hulu TV Show Shrill, about a full-figured woman who wants to change her life — but not her body, is seeking to hire naked bicylists and roller bladers for filming an episode next week in Portland.  Click here for more information.  The episode will be filmed on the evening of August 14.  They are looking for people that are willing to be bare and have a cool bike or roller blades.  In order to be considered, register here.

There should be plenty of campsites for tents and smaller RVs. Check with the office if you need a room or larger RV site. Enjoy the traditional pool, the volleyball pool, sauna and hot tub, bocce, pickle-ball and volleyball courts. Starting from Friday breakfast through Sunday lunch, meals will be available. There will be bocce ball, horse shoes, shuffle board, cribbage, and pickle ball tournaments, plus other fun events. There will be personalized necklace or bracelet making, as well as whiskey and Microbrew tasting. There will be several seminars and informative sessions. You will also get to vote on the 2nd Annual AANR-NW Photo Contest. Children will have their own special area with crafts, a climibing wall, a playground and sandbox.

The AANR-NW General Assembly Meeting will be held on Sunday, July 21st.

** Oregon…Terwilliger Hot Springs Open!

Terwilliger Hot Springs, commonly referred to as Cougar Hot Springs, has over the years had several threatening challenges that impacted nude recreation.

In 1996-97 a high crime rate and increased visitor use of the springs motivated the United States Forest Service (USFS) to create a user fee program in June of 1998. Several AANR members reported that with the staffed fee kiosk they felt more secure, safer and felt behaviors at the springs had improved. The USFS considered the fee program a great success. There was a decrease in crime at the springs, parking and camping areas.

September of 1998 the Forest Service decided to ban nudity. Friends of Cougar notified The Naturist Action Committee (NAC). NAC representative Mark Storey notified AANR-NW GAT Chair Shirley Gauthier who at the time was also representing NAC and AANR. AANR-NW members wrote letters, made phone calls and contributed funds to fight the ban on nudity.

AANR-NW, The Naturist Society and Willamettan member Mark Gauthier attended several meetings with the USFS, Friends of Cougar and Hoodoo Recreation concerning the ban on nudity. Mark’s twenty-one years working for the Forest Service was most valuable in addressing nudist concerns at the meetings and bringing our message to the table. The District Forest Service Ranger was convinced at a December 1998 meeting that banning nudity was not the answer and agreed to allow nude use to continue. It has over the years been a successful decision.

A storm on December 30, 2017 caused a massive rock slide on Aufderheide Drive that closed the springs. There was a short period of time that one could enter from another road. Shortly after the rock slide, construction began on the other entrance. The rock slide caused the springs to be closed seven months.

The springs were open about three weeks before they were again closed. On August 19, 2018 the USFS once again declared the springs unsafe. A human-caused fire burned the bathroom building and 11,500 acres of forest. The surrounding area near the springs was old growth forest.

The good news is that Terwilliger Hot Springs officially opens after a 10-month closure to the public on July 1. Over the years nudists have reported more and more visitors are choosing to wear clothing and suits in the pools. If you want to experience legally sanctioned nude recreation you won’t find a more beautiful, relaxing and pristine place to do so than Terwilliger Hot Springs.

** 11th Skin to the Wind Festival of Fun

The 11th Annual Skin to the Wind Festival of Fun begins on July 10 at Sun Meadow Resort with a DJ Dance. The fun continues with a Wine and Paint party, a WINR (Women in Nude Recreation) Gathering, sports and workshops. Of course, there will be volleyball, disc golf, the pools, bocce ball and games with good food and good friends.

On July 11th, there will be a concert with Amber Sweeney, who is described as

“The fearless and passionate Los Angeles transplant has staked her place in the Northwest music scene. A vivid combination of sharp and deep songwriting and story telling, connection with the wide net of local musicians, and a compassionate connect to cause makes Amber impossible to ignore.”

On July 12, The W Lovers perform in concert. They are described as:

“This is music for a hammock near a river, with a cold lemonade on a hot day. This is music for driving alone in the middle of the night. This is music that’s easy to listen to but hard to shake afterwards.”

** Facebook to Meet with Photographers to Reconsider Nudity Policy

On June 2, 2019, the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) collaborated with the photographer Spencer Tunick to create a nude art installation in New York City to challenge the censorship of artistic nudity on Facebook and Instagram. 125 men and women stripped down and held giant photos of male nipples over their bodies to cover themselves. The women also put male nipple stickers over their own nipples, since Facebook bans the display of womens’ nipples.

Four days later, on June 6th, Facebook agreed to meet with a group of artists, educators, curators and activists. They have confirmed that they will reconsider their policy. Instagram, a photo sharing application, is owned by Facebook. However, at this time, nothing has changed. You can still be banned from Facebook for sharing any nude photos.

The 15th World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) in Portland, OR is being held Saturday, June 29. It is expected to draw thousands of nude and nearly nude cyclists. The event’s motto is “As bare as you dare.” The official ride meets at 8PM at Laurelhurst Park, with the six mile ride starting at 9PM. The official route is not disclosed. The 15th World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) in Portland, OR is being held Saturday, June 29. It is expected to draw thousands of nude and nearly nude cyclists. The event’s motto is “As bare as you dare.” The official ride meets at 8PM at Laurelhurst Park, with the six mile ride starting at 9PM. The official route is not disclosed. ** Second Annual AANR-NW Photography Contest

There’s still time to submit your photos for this year’s AANR-Northwest Photography Contest. Enter your stunning photos and win cash prizes and accolades. The deadline for online entries is July 15, 2019. Or you may bring an electronic version of your photo and a 8.5 x 11 print to the AANR-NW Convention at Kaniksu Family Ranch. Judging, by attendees, will occur during the convention from July 18-20, culminating with awards on the evening of July 20th.
This year’s categories are:
* Nude but not Nude (Pictures that show nudism, but can be used at public venues like public festivals)
* Our Diverse World
* Out in Nature
* At our Club
* Other

For each category that has at least five entries, there will be a $75 prize. The grand prize winner will be $150.

The AANR convention is right around the corner. August 12-18 at Sun Meadow Resort in Worely, Idaho is sure to be a fun filled reunion of nudists from coast to coast.

AANR Government Affairs Team (GAT) relies on membership dues and donations to finance the legal challenges nudists face on a daily basis. Member volunteer contributions in the way of time, energy and enthusiasm contributes to AANR GAT successes and adds value to your AANR membership.

We all have an opportunity to financially contribute to GAT. A silent auction at convention provides a great opportunity for clubs and individual members to contribute.

Donations can be anything from a piece of art, bottle of wine, gift cards, nudist themed books, gift baskets, t-shirts, homemade items, old nudist magazines, and as always resort stays and vacations. Keep in mind many guests at convention may be limited on purchasing large items due to airline luggage constraints.

Don’t wait to add your contribution to the one the Willamettans have donated.

The Willamettans have generously donated a week ground fees and rental, (based on availability) RV site or tent site for a family. This certificate is especially valuable because there is no expiration date and no date exclusions! The Willamettans welcomes all people willing to conform to its principles and standards, regardless of age, gender, marital status, religious belief, ethnic origin or sexual orientation. People of all gender identities, ethnicities, sexual identities, ages, sizes, religions and physical abilities are welcomed.

One of the fun ways to contribute would be to attend convention and participate in the silent auction. It can get wild and crazy!

The Columbia Gorge Express weekend service to Rooster Rock State Park is now active for the summer. The park is the location of one of the supported nude beaches in the Oregon State Park system. This express service can get you from the Portland Gateway Transit Center to Rooster Rock or to non-nudist sites further into the gorge. ** Columbia Gorge Express Weekend Shuttle Service Launched May 4!

The days are getting longer, warmer, and brighter, which means more visitors will head out to experience the beauty of the Columbia River Gorge! It also means crowded parking lots, so it’s important to plan ahead.

Starting Saturday, May 4, Columbia Gorge Express will operate weekend shuttle service between Rooster Rock State Park (aanr-nw.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cc7f511b492b87d55fd7619fb&id=c2523a9f85&e=84c965e783) and Multnomah Falls (aanr-nw.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cc7f511b492b87d55fd7619fb&id=dbbeb65e06&e=84c965e783) . As the Multnomah Falls parking lot fills up on Saturdays and Sundays, visitors will need to park at Rooster Rock ($5 entry fee per vehicle) and then ride the free shuttle.

Skip the hassle of parking altogether and board the Columbia Gorge Express bus at Gateway Transit Center (aanr-nw.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cc7f511b492b87d55fd7619fb&id=461e338c3a&e=84c965e783) in Portland. Stop at Multnomah Falls, then hop on the next bus to Cascade Locks and Hood River for a Gorge-ous afternoon!

** Nude Use of Blind Creek Beach in Florida is Threatened

This St. Lucie County haven for naturists has openly thrived since 2014. Sheriff deputies tolerantly patrol and Treasure Coast Naturists (TCN) board members regularly consult with County Commissioners and staff. So what is really happening and why is the nude beach imperiled? The following will summarize conditions that are compelling a political fight in Florida’s State capital. Your help in the form of legal defense donations is needed to fund this battle.

The first unnoticed salvo occurred as far back as three years ago when the State of Florida, through its Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), sent a complaint to St. Lucie County. DEP objected to St. Lucie County government tolerating a nude beach on what it sees as State-owned land.

So what is the root cause of the State’s challenge to Blind Creek Beach’s nude use? Some quick background history will help readers better understand.

Background History on the Dispute at Blind Creek Beach

About 15 years ago, St. Lucie County established Blind Creek Beach County Park as an isolated Hutchinson Island preserve located immediately north of the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant. Before the county park’s officially startup, this same section of isolated shoreline was host to a long tradition of nude sunbathing and swimming. Begun as far back as the 1970s, the free beach attracted naturists from around North America. Skinny dippers encountered a pristine piece of coastline that was relatively free of arrests or harassment.

The Opening in 2014

In 2014, frank discussions between local naturist advocates, the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, and the St. Lucie County Attorney led to the recognition that this isolated stretch of beach and its tradition of family-oriented skinny dipping – did not run afoul of the state’s anti-nudity statute (SS – 800.03). As long as lewd behavior did not occur, County deputies would quietly patrol the beach just like any other. And so a grand social experiment began where local government tolerated and even cooperated with a naturist not-for-profit, the Treasure Coast Naturists (TCN), in managing Blind Creek Beach. TCN patrols the shore, protects the sensitive dunes from human intrusion, funds and provides portable bathrooms to beach-goers, manages the parking lot, organizes beach clean-ups and town hall meetings, and operates a website ( www.treasurecoastnaturists.org (aanr-nw.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cc7f511b492b87d55fd7619fb&id=8e3cd9dc28&e=84c965e783) ) that educates the uninitiated about the freer norms occurring at this county park.

The Economic Argument for Naturist Beaches

The economic rewards from Blind Creek Beach are impressive. The number of tourists flocking to St. Lucie County has significantly increased. Many are attracted to the Blind Creek Beach experiment, so much so that it is now the most visited beach in the county. A range of 500-1000 naturists show up on weekends. Hotel occupancy is up. Restaurants have been filled by a new niche of family tourists. Behind the scenes both the business community and county government administrators have witnessed the unexpected. Home to one of only three successfully established nude beaches in the State, St. Lucie County has found itself in an economic sweet spot.

Since its inception in 2014, Blind Creek Beach has been successfully branded worldwide as a tropical, isolated, and unspoiled paradise for naturists. Tourists now come from Europe, the Caribbean, and South America to experience it for themselves, fill up nearby hotel rooms, and enjoy the many local restaurants. It’s understandably difficult for St. Lucie County to ignore this abundant new source of tourist dollars.

The Threat to Blind Creek Beach

Meanwhile in Tallahassee, DEP has repeatedly voiced objections to nude use on their land. DEP claims that since over 95 percent of Blind Creek Beach County Park’s leased tracts are actually owned by DEP (and the State of Florida), the department insists that is has standing to object. As part of its purpose, DEP plays a primary role in administering and protecting the state’s wild lands. Among others, these include the state park system, state wildlife refuges, and state preserves. What DEP overlooks is that it already has TCN as a committed environmental partner in helping to manage the county park.

For the past three years, DEP has repeatedly written threatening letters to St. Lucie County’s government administrators. They continue to demand that the naturist use be shutdown or moved away from Blind Creek Beach. The response from St. Lucie County has been largely silent. With the backing of business leaders and others, the county has chosen to let the grand experiment continue and thrive.

The Discovery of Trouble in March 2019

After repeated rumors of pending trouble, in March 2019 TCN wrote a letter to a long-time Tallahassee naturist advocate and lobbyist. TCN asked his firm to investigate several key questions. Is Blind Creek Beach’s naturist status actually in jeopardy? If true, how and why is it threatened? Last, who is at the heart of the objection?

Subsequent research in Tallahassee Uncovers a Real Threat

After careful research, the lobbyist discovered that yes, the State of Florida (through DEP) was getting ready to take immediate additional actions to compel St. Lucie County to close down all nude use of Blind Creek Beach. Since learning of this, TCN has committed to uncovering the answers and prevail in this dispute. The naturists refuse to back down or leave this beach. To win, TCN has officially hired the Florida lobbying firm of Maury Management Group. This company has a long successful record of representing both South Florida Free Beaches and Florida Naturists Association (SFFB) since 1994 and the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) in Tallahassee. Their normal purview is to watchdog and identify potentially harmful bills or legislation. But with TCN’s recent hiring of Maury Management, a far more intensive, assertive, and expensive work plan has been set in motion.

A Two-Step Process Will Save Blind Creek Beach and Potentially Open the Rest of Florida to Naturist Beaches

According to principal Ramon Maury, there are two steps that must be undertaken. Timing is important too. As an added benefit, the concentrated effort to save Blind Creek Beach could also lead to reopening former clothing-optional beaches that Floridians lost in the 1980’s. Step 1 encompasses placing a hold on DEP’s actions to quickly shut down Blind Creek Beach. Maury Management Group has opened up a dialog with each of the stakeholders in Tallahassee and is working to impose a temporary hold on all pending actions that might stop naturism at Blind Creek Beach.

Step II involves opening a conversation with the key players while the Florida legislature is still in session. We have one remaining month. Possible outcomes that appear to be within reach include rewriting state park rules and/or regulations that currently discourage the establishment of sanctioned nude beaches in Florida. Convincing arguments already underway include the economic perspective. Nude beaches are good for growing local economies, especially those that remain heavily dependent on tourist dollars and the service sector.

** Club Orient Update

We are visiting St. Martin this week and are dismayed to see the devastation at Club Orient. Club Orient was a beautiful clothing optional resort situated on Orient Bay in St. Martin that was destroyed by Hurricane Irma in 2017. Some of the units are just gone. Many of the remaining ones are hulks, just the concrete outside structures. It is beyond sad.

While visiting, it is still possible to rent beach chairs and umbrellas for the day. Only the Perch beach bar has been restored so far, and is open until about 4pm for drinks and meals. So it is still possible to enjoy the beach.

The owners are still trying to settle with the insurance companies, and as of February, they were hoping to rebuild and reopen by next season.

Wednesday April 10, 2019 – Washington State Senator Saldana prominently and publicly recognized the nudist clubs in Washington State as very different from adult entertainment.

In front of a full assembly of the chamber, Senator Saldana–sponsor of her companion bill to EHB 1756–took to the microphone shortly before a vote to publicly explain the difference between family nudism and the businesses the law seeks to regulate.

EHB 1756 provides protections for dancers in adult entertainment clubs such as requiring “panic buttons” to quickly summon help if a dancer is approached inappropriately by a patron, and creation of a formal panel to address conditions and future restrictions on those entertainment venues.

AANR and AANR-NW had written to the Senator several times to request a distinction because, per language in the definitions, the presence of “nude dancing” could have triggered application.

After noting the presence of nudist clubs in Washington State, the senator added that the atmosphere in our clubs is distinctly different from sexually-oriented entertainment intended for adults only. “Family clubs would not be subject to this law,” she affirmed. We deeply appreciate the Senator’s remarks, which she had promised to make in earlier emails to me this week.

Initial communications to the Labor and Commerce committee didn’t receive much attention, but they laid an important groundwork of awareness about AANR / AANR NW concerns. We appreciate those clubs and region leaders-from Shirley Gauthier and Mike Parker of Region Government Affairs, President Dave Smith, Vice President Donna Jennings, Jim & Karen Lahey and several Washington AANR clubs. I had prepared and previously submitted a position paper on the subject and then included it in a last-minute reminder to Senator Saldana which Shirley and I described as a “Hail Mary.”

AANR dues and member support makes tracking legislation possible. It makes it possible to hold monthly Government Affairs Team (GAT) calls under the leadership of Tim Mullins with volunteers to plan strategy. It makes AANR’s presence at the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), which Tim and AANR President Kathy Watzel have staffed in recent years, possible. There, many lawmakers have their first opportunity to learn about family-oriented nudism and why we enjoy it.

We did not feel that way but we were in love – with Living Waters Spa in Desert Hot Springs, CA. And it has been for sale for the last year. When we arrived for our bi-annual visit in November, we found out it would probably be our last since the owners had accepted an offer from an LA-based chef who had absolutely no sympathy for or interest in keeping its clothing-optional status. I cried on the trip home. Imagine our joy (tempered by compassion for the owners’ disappointment, of course) when we called in January to see if we could book once more before it closed only to find out that the deal had fallen through!

Around comes March and we are sitting in that heavenly mineral water (a perfect 101 degrees in the hot tub and 89 degrees in the pool) – no chlorine, cleansed by the amazing flow rate. We are chatting to a couple from England and someone from Minnesota who was in town for a conference and another couple who drove up from LA about what a close call it was when an idea started to form: why not see if there were enough people in the Nude Nation to put together an investor group, buy this incredible gem and keep it going? Yeah, why NOT?

So just picture yourself in the kidney-shaped hot tub that seats 17, soaking in the odorless, lithium-infused water, watching the sun go down over the Coachella Valley Pass while Mount St. Jacinto changes from grey to purple-blue. You’ve just spent the day watching the hummingbirds duke it out over the bougainvillea, had a blissful massage, read a great book and talked to some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet over happy hour in hot tub at 3pm. As soon as the sun sets, you’ll be heading into your room to use the kitchenette to whip up a dinner from ingredients you picked up at the Palm Springs Farmers Market yesterday. There is so much to appreciate about Living Waters – the comfortable beds, the low-key, friendly atmosphere, the sense of ultimate relaxation. Wouldn’t it be a shame to have that vanish from our nude vacation options list – especially when so many other resorts are threatened by their owners’ retirements?

Here’s what we are doing about it. We are calling for investors to raise $1.3 Million ($1M for the 8-10 room hotel and $300K for facility upgrades and working capital). Please specify your category (1) 10-20K (2) 25-50K (3) 75-100K and (4) 100K+. Before we ask you for an actual commitment, we will share a business plan with you, have a letter of intent signed with the owners and be available by email and phone to answer your questions.

And you won’t be alone! Past guests of Living Waters have come forward and indicated an interest in investing in the property. Thanks to them, we have reached the goal of $600K, the amount we think represents a critical mass to proceed to the next step. These early investors are dedicated to maintaining the relaxed and friendly atmosphere, preserving the clothing-optional status and interested in the investment upside of improving the business so that it is a viable, going concern. We are all looking at this as a 10-year investment in an S-Corp.
