New AANR-NW Hall of Fame Members
At this year’s AANR-NW convention, two new members for the highest award in the region were announced. Margie and Chas Cantlon joined the ranks of the 18 current members of the AANR-NW Hall of Fame. In announcing their induction into the Hall of Fame, Pat Brown read their accomplishments as
“I love this committee assignment – what could be better than recognizing the most outstanding volunteers among us for their accomplishments.
First, before any award is presented, I would like to thank the NW Hall of Fame Committee,Sharon McLeod, Paul Kuntzmann, Mel Kanner and Mike Parker. This year we had some tough decisions to make. There were four nominations: the committee considered two. This resulted in a tie vote and so, after a second vote, we made the decision to award two awards this year, something that has only been done three times in the history of the Hall of Fame award. Several years this award is not presented because there is no volunteer who meets the requirements. That certainly is not the case this year.
I could write a long list of their impressive accomplishments, but what I can’t put on paper is how good you feel in their presence. It is impossible to separate these two resumes – they are so interdependent that not even death has separated their accomplishments.
One nominee said it perfectly – “while he was the showman, she was the mover and shaker behind the scenes that got the job done. She acted as the breeze beneath his wings until his death on 29 March of 2013.”
It gives the NW Hall of Fame Committee great pride to award this year’s NW Hall of Fame Award to Margie Cantlon and posthumously to Chas Cantlon.”
Let us offer our congratulations to Margie.

August 26-27 – Weekend Full of Beach Fun
Rooster Rock-Mountaindale Sun Resort-Sauvie Island.
You won’t want to miss this event that combines nude recreation on public lands and a great resort experience. A full weekend of fun and memory making. The Willamettans Family Clothing Optional Campground is gifting all volunteers a two night 3 day pass with an expiration date of September 2018. It is like you volunteer a weekend and receive a free pass at a resort. If you received a pass at the cleanups in July you are not eligible to receive an additional pass. This is a great gift and we thank the Willamettans.
AANR-NW is excited to announce a weekend of sun, fun and community service. You do not have to be an AANR member to participate. You can contribute to the successful 15 year partnership between the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR), SOLVE, Oregon State Parks Department and The Department of Oregon Fish and Wildlife while recreating wearing nothing but sun screen, shoes, a hat and a smile!
August 26-9 am – Meet up at Rooster Rock State Park entrance to the clothing optional area of the park. When you arrive at the kiosk simply tell the staffer you are there for the AANR-NW beach cleanup and you will be given a parking pass.
• Bring your own water in a refillable container. Water will be available at the bathrooms located near the entrance. Quite a walk from the beach area.
• Garden or work gloves highly recommended.
• No dogs leashed or unleashed are allowed once you leave the parking area.
• Hot sunny day predicted so sun screen lotion advised.
The park staff supplies the tools, litter grippers, and garbage bags. There will be work details for all physical abilities.
NOON – AANR-NW and Bare Mountain Retreat are supplying hotdogs, condiments, napkins and propane to grill the dogs. We have come to call them AANR dogs! Thank you Bare Mountain Retreat for the cash gift.
Following the barbecue Mountaindale Sun Resort (MSR) has invited all beach volunteers to their resort in North Plains. MSR is gifting all volunteers free day fees and a free chicken dinner! If you choose to camp overnight they are charging $6 (half price) for a campsite. This generous gift is most appreciated and for those traveling a distance extra rewarding in that it makes participating the next day at Sauvie Island convenient. MSR will need a count for dinner so If you’re planning on attending the free dinner and/or spending the night camping at MSR, please email them at host@mountaindalesun.com
August 27-9 am – We meet at the gravel parking area entrances to Sauvie Island clothing optional areas. Parking permits will be handed out at that time. We concentrate our volunteer energy on the gravel parking area. Once the parking area is complete we move to the beach. Volunteers can at that time do a litter sweep of the beach area.
• Bring your own water in a refillable container. There is no water available at Sauvie Island.
• Garden or work gloves highly recommended.
• Hot sunny day predicted so sun screen lotion advised.
Following the beach work another AANR Dog (hotdog) barbecue. Not into hotdogs? Bring your own lunch.
Bring a friend along and receive a Kaniksu Ranch past Bare Buns Fun Run shirt while supplies last. Thanks Kaniksu for the gift of shirts!
Needed…..I am searching for someone willing to bring their pop-up canopy and set it up for both cleanups. A grill master is also needed. Stove, propane and dogs provided!
If you’re new to AANR-NW beach cleanups or you can volunteer for a specific detail and have questions, email Shirley Gauthier at sherbog@msn.com
