Hidden Springs indoor nude recreation night

Hallo all,

Let’s if I can keep my fingers straight this time and have them hit the correct keys. Our next indoor nude recreation night is planned for Sunday February 13 from 7 pm until 9 pm. We have the availability over a pool, hot tub and sauna, which makes it a very cozy atmosphere for the event. Our last indoor nude recreation night had a very low turnout, so I’m asking you to show up for this event, so that we can keep these events going for the next seasons. The admission price is still only $8 per person for AANR/TNS members when pre-registering and $10 for non members. Admission at the door is $5 higher than the pre-registration price. If you want more information about the event including the location in the greater Portland/Vancouver area, send an e-mail to hevents@frontier.com.

Please note that if you are used to mailing me directly that I will be on vacation the week prior to the event and won’t be able to answer e-mails. Sending your e-mail to hsevents@frontier.com will ensure you that you will get an answer.

Best regards,

Chris Brokke

Vice President Hidden Springs

Feedback Requested To The US Forest Service On Bagby Hot Springs Nude Usage

*Report on January 18 US Forest Service Open House **and request for immediate feedback to the USFS concerning nude usage of Bagby Hot Springs:*

The U.S. Forest Service hosted an open house on Tuesday, January 18 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Mount Hood National Forest headquarters in Sandy, Oregon. A number of Forest Service employees were there to talk, one-on-one or in groups, to those in attendance on allowing private management of Bagby Hot Springs and 27 campgrounds in the Mount Hood National Forest. There was no formal program or public presentations, but opportunity was given at the event for written input by those attending. A number of AANR members were present and participated in the discussions.

According to one USFS employee, there were two actual bids submitted on the contracting out request for bids. She did not name the bidders. The additional Forest Service-run sites would be added to an existing concession permit that already covers 28 recreation sites. Bagby Hot Springs has been evidently withdrawn from the proposal and only the 27 additional campgrounds will be offered for permit in 2011. The usual permit term is five years but, the Forest Service has decided that the campground concession permit will be let out for only one year, and then, at the end of 2011, the bid process will be done again.

A public letter was issued by the Forest Service saying they are doing an Environmental Analysis (EA) regarding the possibility of a concessionaire at Bagby. *The 30-day comment period for written public input began in mid-January and ends on Monday, February 14.* The decision regarding whether Bagby Hot Springs will be under a concessionaire permit and included with the 27 campgrounds, or a volunteer group permit, or Forest Service management will be made on factors including public comments received. The decision will be made quickly, by March or April, but the Forest Service will continue management through 2011 and may possibly include Bagby with the 27 campgrounds in 2012.

The open house was not strictly dealing with the 1992 anti-nudity Order that is in effect at Bagby, but a number of people present were concerned about that particular issue. AANR has been following this issue since citations were issued a few years ago and the previously unknown Order came to light. Prior discussions between USFS officials and AANR/AANR-NW representatives yielded no breakthroughs on this issue. Naturist Action Committee (NAC) representatives were also present at one of these meetings.

Our position is that simple nudity in and around the hot tubs, absent any other type of illegal conduct, is a long-time historic tradition at Bagby Hot Springs and should be allowed. The Forest Service is adamant that they do not wish to cancel the Order issued in 1992, banning nudity at Bagby. That is because an alcohol ban and night closure of the site were also part of that Order. It was also stated that the cost involved in cancelling the order would be prohibitive. We believe that a simple amendment to the order, allowing nudity in the hot tubs and around the hot tub area would return to the spirit and intent of the historical hot springs usage. There is no anti-nudity ordinance/law in Clackamas county (where Bagby is situated) or in the state of Oregon.

Please send in your comments to the address(es) at the bottom of this e-mail before Monday, February 14. You may identify yourself as a nudist, an AANR member or as an “interested party.” Please write in clear language about why you desire to see Bagby Hot Springs as a clothes-optional recreation area. If you have been a user of the hot springs in the past, please relate your experiences using the site nude. If you were unaware in the past about the 1992 Order, please also state that information. Mail and/or e-mail feedback is preferred over phone contact.

Other groups attending the January 18 open house and expressing an interest in Bagby include the Bagby Caretakers, BARK (a northwest grass roots forest advocacy group) and the Northwest Forest Conservancy. The nudity ban is not a major issue with these groups, although some opinion in the groups leans our way. At this point, AANR does not have a recommendation, one way or the other, concerning future contracting of the facilities to a private contractor.

January 18 Open House Input requested concerning proposed management changes at Bagby Hot Springs

*January 18 Open House Input requested concerning proposed management changes at Bagby Hot Springs*

The U.S. Forest Service is hosting an open house on Tuesday, January 18 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the national forest headquarters in Sandy, Oregon (see directions in final paragraph). The purpose of the event is to host discussion on allowing private management of Bagby Hot Springs and a number of campgrounds in the Mount Hood National Forest. The Forest Service already put out the bid information and, although two management companies showed interested, no bids were received. The bid process, if completed, would add Bagby and 28 campgrounds and day-use areas to a concession permit that already covers three dozen recreation sites. Increasingly, as Forest Service personnel budgets have shrunken, private management has been looked at and contracts in other areas (including the Willamette National Forest) have been awarded.

An environmental assessment evidently will be completed before Bagby and the campgrounds will be included in a concession permit. A public letter was issued by the Forest Service saying they are doing an Environmental Analysis (EA) regarding the possibility of a concessionaire at Bagby, and there will be a 30-day comment period soon for written public input. Here is a part of that 1 1/4-page letter: “The Developed Recreation Site Concessionaire Permit Environmental Assessment (EA) is still in the process of being completed and no decision has been made yet. The Forest is requesting your comments on this project to help guide the final decision. Upon completion of the EA, there will be no further public comment period. As such, this 30-day comment period represents the final pre-decisional opportunity for public review of the project. Comments must be received or postmarked within 30 days of the date that notice for this comment period is published in *The Oregonian*.”

The Forest Service is also apparently seeking some public input on Bagby at this open house. If you choose to attend, and are allowed to speak, please identify yourself as a nudist, be civil, keep your speech short and on-target. Our position is that simple nudity in and around the hot tubs, absent any other type of illegal conduct, is a long-time tradition at Bagby Hot Springs and should be allowed. We also intend to request and submit written comment during the 30-day period.

During a recent meeting of an AANR Government Affairs representative with Mount Hood Forest Supervisor Andrei Rykoff concerning Bagby, Rykoff stated that the existing anti-nudity order could only be changed by doing an EA. Perhaps the new Assesment could revisit the prior anti-nudity Order. At the very least, this will be an opportunity to make a strong statement that the 1992 anti-nudity Order is unneccessary and needs to be changed. Also, it should be emphasized that a major reason the Forest Service is not getting comments to change the Order is that most of the public still don’t know about it.

Here is the Forest Service site with some information on what is proposed to happen concerning concessionaires at Bagby and other locations: *http://www.fs.fed.us/r6/mthood/projects/nepa_project.shtml?project=32471*

Update on Bagby Hot Springs physical site: Ranger Rykoff stated in the recent meeting that the old log tubs had been degrading for quite a while and the Forest Service had decided to replace them. The Forest Service installed a new round tub and one ofuro 2- or 3-person oval tub on the lower deck before winter weather set in. They will be installing two more ofuro tubs on the lower deck this year, to replace the three old log tubs.

Please consider coming to this open house if you care about allowing nudity at the Bagby Hot Springs area.

The Forest Service headquarters is located at16400 Champion Way in Sandy, Oregon. The headquarters is the first building on the right (coming from the west), about 300 yards before you reach the first stoplight west of Sandy. If you miss the turn off, you can turn right at the light and loop around on back roads to get there.

New nude winter swim opportunity

If you miss the nude swims in Seattle and you’re looking for a winter nudist activity in Western Washington, or if you want to support another nude venue, here is your opportunity.

The SLUGS travel club has enjoyed monthly winter swims in the Seattle area for several years. The events have been so successful that it was necessary to restrict them to SLUGS and guests only. Beginning next weekend, the facility they use will be open a second time monthly for other nudists. On the third Saturday of the month from 6 to 10:30, swims will be open to current members of AANR or TNS and to current members of AANR recognized landed clubs. The fee is $20/person. Please bring your ID and AANR/TNS/club membership card. The plan is for the monthly swims to continue through April and resume in the fall.

The swims take place at the Richmond Retreat in Shoreline, just north of Seattle. See http://therichmondretreat.blogspot.com/ . The facilities are all indoors and include a large pool, hot tub, sauna and a gathering room with tea and coffee, and tables to sit and chat or play games. If the parking on site fills, you can also park along the street.

The facility is also open to individuals and groups on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3 to 9pm for $25/person. Please make reservations in advance for the weekday events. No unscheduled drop ins. Call (206) 369-6116 or email therichmondretreat@gmail.com for reservations.

For more information, visit http://therichmondretreat.blogspot.com/ or call (206) 369-6116 or email therichmondretreat@gmail.com
