From the President’s Desk

The big Labor Day weekend came and passed so quickly this year!  I know the Northwest clubs had a variety of amazing events and that for many, this marks an “official” end of the season, although activities continue.  Please send your activity schedule to the NW Calendar.  I think it’s important to show that our clubs are active all year.  I already know of Thanksgiving and Christmas parties planned, but some clubs are looking at polar plunges, clothing and toy drives and blood donations.  These are all things that can keep us active throughout the year.  Kathy and I plan to be “Snowbirds” this year.  After our October events at Kaniksu, we are moving our Winnebago south to Sun Meadow, at least 70 miles south.

Nudity is offense.  Napalm isn’t?  Social Protest forces Facebook to Back Down. 

It took a social media protest, including the prime minister of Norway Erna Solbery, but Facebook finally backed down. The Norwegian daily Afenposten had posted a story including the iconic picture of Phan Thi Kim Phuc,  a nine year old trying to escape a horrifying napalm attack.   Facebook had removed the picture and all commentary about it to “protect” us from the nudism.  Not the horror of war.  Not the horror of napalm.  But because of the horror of nudity.  This photo was instrumental in the 1970’s in changing the discussion about the Vietnam war.  Because of its historical significance, a large protest was mounted and Facebook was forced to change its decision today.  Newspapers are finding that they have come to depend on Facebook to distribute their content.  Thus our news is being censored by a company that feels it must protect us from nudity.
