AANR Weekly Report 3/5/2010

By admin at 9:43 pm on March 5, 2010 | No comments

*Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director*

*“Friends, Members, and Country Men/Country Women: Lend Me Your Ears…”*

…And consider lending your talents to the Association as a future officer or member of AANR’s Board of Trustees.  This June, members will elect a new slate of officers and board, but the deadline for submitting validated petitions to run falls on March 15, just 10 days away.  Positions are open for both Member Trustees, who represent all members of a geographical area, and Club Trustees who come from the management/ownership ranks of our clubs and represent each of the varying sizes of those clubs.  Put another way, a leader or owner of a mid-size club would submit a validated nomination to run as a trustee representing mid-sized clubs (usually labeled with such numbers as “3” or “4.”)

*Club Tiers and Forms Available*

For those seeking Club Trustee positions, a chart of the various tiers of clubs (based on the 2009 Year-End Membership Count) is available on www.aanr.com in both the Member Benefits and Club Services sections. Log in to either section and view the “Club Voting Tiers” document under Ruling Documents. You’ll also find the applicable forms and further information.

*Candidate Profiles*

Candidate profiles are due to Linda Berry by March 22 for publication in the Voter’s Guide that will be inserted into the May issue of The Bulletin along with the voting ballot. Contact Linda at editor@aanr.com if you have submitted your nomination form but haven’t received the Candidate Profile guidelines.

*Minutes of January 2010 Midwinter Board Meeting*

Thanks to Tina Barnott’s efficiency, the minutes have been distributed to the board and are also available on www.aanr.com in the Ruling Documents, Download Zones of both Member Benefits and Club Services sections.

*Thanks for Keeping the Voice of Nude Recreation Credible*

Last week we distributed a memo to you, our leaders and clubs, regarding a pilot television program called The Marriage Ref.  Said “referee” apparently will jump in between spouses appearing in the program to break up “fights” over a variety of topics. We deeply appreciate so many of you who have considered the recommendations of the experts of AANR’s public relations firm as expressed in the memo, and for letting us know of your decisions to decline “invitations” from show producers who plan to feature a couple fighting over the nudity topic.  Doing so—at least until a point in the future after other episodes of the show have aired and it is possible to gauge how subjects are treated—will thwart what could be veiled attempts to reinforce stereotypes about nudism, or worse, in a cheap play for laughs and ratings.

We also recognize that venues and outlets not affiliated with AANR have significant potential to adversely impact the general public’s perception of nude recreation (and, especially, whether it should be regulated or outlawed) by their participation in such shows.  For this reason, we are in the process of actively communicating with many to share what our experts have shared with us.

*AANR Helping Members and Clubs*

Over the past two weeks we have responded to the following urgent situations:

(1) We worked with a West Coast club that has been grappling with a frivolous—but expensive and time consuming—lawsuit by two people claiming they were unlawfully denied entry.

(2) Similarly, we worked with an East Coast club which is facing legal challenges from two unhappy former members who were asked to leave.

(3) We provided a kit of legal precedents and held a telephone conference with the attorney representing a member in Canada facing government interference related to practicing family nudity within the home.

(4) A husband and wife couple, members in the Midwest, has been suspended from their jobs as consultants with a non-profit firm after their involvement in nude recreation and leadership positions with a club were made known.  We have provided guidance on options available and some legal basics.

(5) A divorced member in the Midwest is finding custody of his 10-year-old son challenged on the basis that he is a nudist, although mom had participated for years.

*E-Bulletin Helps AANR Obtain Valuable Feedback on Website*

Thanks to hard work by Director of Electronic Communications Lynn Von Hagel, an electronic survey was distributed to over 20,000 readers of AANR’s E-Bulletin newsletter.  The survey gauges opinions of the aanr.com website in preparation for a substantial overhaul of the site we’ll be making this spring.  To date, OVER 3,000 people have responded!  We deeply, deeply appreciate their taking the time to do this and will report on results in the near future.

*Promoting Nude Recreation*

Yesterday I had an interview with a reporter from *The Boston Phoenix* in preparation for her upcoming article about Nude Recreation in New England. During the conversation I discussed Berkshire Vista (and its proximity to historic Stockbridge, MA, and the famed Tanglewood Music centre), the prime opportunities on Cape Cod available at Sandy Terraces, and the dedicated work of volunteers who work each summer on the beaches of the Cape Cod National Seashore with restoration of the former nude beach there in mind.

We also talked about the chance to experience a genuine country inn while in your birthday suit at Abbott’s Glen or at the Maple Glen club, and the skinny-dipping tradition in the Green Mountain state memorialized in (now) Sen. Patrick Leahy’s legal memorandum. I expounded on the large number of AANR members and the participants in last summer’s World Record Skinny-Dip at Solair club, plus Connecticut’s Sun Ridge Resort, nudist opportunities in Foster, Rhode Island, and much more. I concluded the call on what I trust will be a great story.  Watch for it to appear soon.

*In the News…*

White Tail Park in Ivor, Virginia, has been noted in articles as far as Chicago, Illinois, and beyond in coverage of the nude Sunday morning services offered in the chapel on the club’s grounds: http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/bizarre&id=7295837.

Also this week, Bare Necessities Tour & Travel received some GREAT publicity from several Scandinavian media about its business and the upcoming Hawaii cruise.  The link below will take you to a rough Google translation of an article appearing in Finland.

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=no&u=http://www.vg.no/reise/artikkel.php%3Fartid%3D593751&ei=i86PS-6mCY-Ytgfr2NygCw&sa=X&oi=translate&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CAcQ7gEwAA&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dhttp://www.vg.no/reise/artikkel.php%253Fartid%253D593751%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG

*The Abominable Snow (wo)Man*

And, finally, speaking of newsworthy events, I want to thank the many of you who forwarded links to us regarding a story coming from the Northeast about a family that built a nude snow sculpture re-creating the Venus di Milo—nude, sans arms, and all.

While their work drew appreciative looks from most who passed by, it generated at least one anonymous tip to police who appeared at the family’s home to apologetically request that they “put some clothes on it” or take it down.  You can watch the video and read more here: http://www.myfoxny.com/dpp/news/offbeat/nude-snow-woman-100303-apx

As long as there are people throughout North America that would actually *call law enforcement* over a rendering of one of history’s most famous and treasured art pieces in crystals destined to melt in days, there will be an American Association for Nude Recreation providing a voice for common sense treatment of nudity and the human body.

* Carolyn Hawkins, Public Relations Coordinator*

*Earth Day, April 22, 2010*

Next week, AANR will be sending out a template Earth Day release for clubs to insert their information to attract media.

* Conference Call*

The team had its second PR conference call this week. The calls have been changed to the first Wednesday of each month. These calls have proven to be very productive as the team shares their own ideas.

*Cruise to Hawaii*

The Bare Necessities Aloha cruise is set to sail next week.  If you plan to be on board the ship, bring your club brochures with you and look for the AANR table on the sea days.

*Linda Berry, Director of Publications*

*The Bulletin*

The April issue is in production.

*Terry Justice, Club/Member Liaison*

Here are the directory changes for this week:

*Bay Bares in Florida* has a new website which is www.baybares.com

I also have a new address for *Sno-Birds in Minnesota* which is:

UNCLAD Clothing Optional Evening 20 March

By admin at 8:42 pm on March 4, 2010 | No comments

This is a reminder that the UNCLAD Art Show opens 13 March and that the clothing optional reception is 20 March from 7:00-9:00 PM.  This has long been a favorite event for northwest nudists, the article that appeared in the last issue of the Nudescene is printed below for your convenience.

Pat Brown

AANR-NW Brand Management

UNCLAD Art Show

AANR-NW will again be a proud sponsor of UNCLAD 2010.  In addition, AANR-NW will again sponsor a special private clothing-optional evening reception and viewing.  UNCLAD 2010 is a juried fine art show dedicated to celebrating the nude figure in art. Now in its ninth year, UNCLAD is known for attracting top artists from across North America.  Last year the show featured works from 105 artists.  The show will run March 13-28 at the Gallery by the Bay in Stanwood, WA.  Visitors will find a wide range of styles and mediums represented, from oils and pastels to charcoal, photography, bronze and wood sculpture. All artwork is available for sale, as well as reproductions and other nude figure art in the expanded gift shop.

Since its inception, UNCLAD has been a phenomenon that has taken on a life of its own.  Eight years ago, Gayle Picken, who was married to a sculptor and managed their Camano Island gallery, decided to celebrate her husband’s birthday in an innovative fashion.  She invited several local artists to participate in a nude art show at their gallery and, much to her surprise, her phone started ringing off the hook.  Artists she didn’t even know asked if they could be in the show, excited they had found a venue for displaying nudes.  That first year, 29 artists participated, crowds poured into the gallery, and the show was born.

Since then, the show has grown exponentially in terms of numbers of participating artists, quality and diversity of the artwork and attendance. For so many people, artists, art enthusiast, and the community in general, UNCLAD provides excitement, pleasure, anticipation and a great source of inspiration.

The clothing optional evening has been a very successful viewing when nudists and their guests could view the exhibit while nude.  The nude evening will not be advertised to the mainstream media.  Artists and models will be on hand for a live drawing session.  The nude night showing is free, and is March 20 from 7 to 9 p.m.  The UNCLAD website, www.uncladart.com, shares much more information and a sampling of artists and their work. _______________________________________________ eNews mailing list eNews@aanr-nw.org http://aanr-nw.org/mailman/listinfo/enews_aanr-nw.org

Please post on the e-news. Thanks

Randy Hoppenbrouwer, Lake Bronson Club

Lake Bronson Family Nudist Club, located less than an hour north-east of Seattle, is a very active nudist club located on 320 acres of forest.

Our Café is normally open weekends from the Memorial Day Weekend to the Labour Day Weekend. Unfortunately the operator of the Café for the last several years will not be able to operate the Café this year. Lake Bronson Club is seeking interest in the nudist community for an operator for this year.

If this is something that you might be interested in, please make a proposal and email it to info@lakebronson.com for our consideration.

AANR Weekly Report 2/12/2010

By admin at 10:22 am on February 13, 2010 | No comments

*Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director***

*Must-Share Story*

This week we heard from AANR Government Affairs Team volunteer Shirley Gauthier with report of a story too important not to pass on.

It seems that Shirley and other volunteers from The Willamettans nudist club in Marcola, Oregon, set up a table alongside other participating members of the area chamber of commerce at an annual event held within a local shopping mall.  Within minutes of putting up a tasteful “window shade” type display banner they were asked to take the banner down.  Ever diplomatic and cordial, Shirley complied but she did ask why. The reason? Its presence had generated a complaint to mall management.

We do not typically affix pictures to weekly reports as doing so triggers spam filters or other technical problems for some clubs.  So you’ll have to wait until a story about this in a future issue of The Bulletin to see what triggered the complaint but I’ll describe it here: The words American Association for Nude Recreation, as well as the AANR-Northwest logo appear along with very discreet pictures. Think shots of couples pictured from their shoulders up, plus a 40-something woman crouched behind her dog after enjoying a stroll on a nude beach.

But the story doesn’t end there.  As she lowered the banner, Shirley looked directly across the mall corridor from her location into a full-size window promotion for a well-known chain that sells novelty items. The feature items?  A corset “trio” complete with garter belt and skimpy bra–modeled on a poster by a woman wearing the getup and little else while grasping the metal pole on a touring bus. Delightfully surprised men look on, and a girlfriend snaps pictures. Oh…plus a few adult “novelties” in a briefcase are also on display.

Ironic, huh?

Admittedly the store is a rent paying tenant, and the chamber of commerce conducting its trade show was a guest.  Hence Shirley’s tactful cooperation (FYI: she did follow up the day’s events with a very well-stated letter to the chamber president.)

But what does it say about current attitudes toward nudity in this country when a banner in which 40-something adults appear where there’s little more than implied simple nudity and it triggers a complaint within minutes?  Yet crowds pass novelties, lingerie, or T-shirts bearing crass slogans, offered for sale. And they don’t seem to bat an eye.

>From time to time, I am asked, “Why do we even need an AANR?” I hope this story provides another answer.  We’ll continue to do what we have done since 1931: advocating for nudity within appropriate settings and educating the public about the wholesome benefits that enjoying nudity offers.

For those who want something else, it appears they’ll have to visit the local mall.

*9th Circuit Rules Indecent Exposure / Nudity Not a Crime of “Moral Turpitude.”*

In a landmark decision a panel of the US Court of Appeals ruled this week that a past conviction for indecent exposure in California did not automatically bar a Mexican immigrant from seeking to remain in the country on the grounds that his deportation would cause undue hardship for his wife and children, who are U.S. citizens.

Writing for the panel in the case of *Nunez v. Holder*, Circuit Judge Stephen Reinhardt explained that having two or more crimes of moral turpitude on one’s record within a ten year period would trigger an automatic denial of the request under immigration law (Nunez also had a conviction for a shoplifting incident.) However, Judge Reinhardt added that the issue of whether an indecent exposure charge was sufficiently severe less clear:

“We start by recognizing one point that does not appear to be in dispute. Exposing oneself in a public place is not necessarily lewd, or base, vile and depraved as traditionally required by our traditional definition of moral turpitude.  For example, the Board of Immigration Appeals and the California courts appear to agree, a sunbather who removes all his clothes to tan on an unoccupied public beach and wakes to find himself surrounded by offended beachgoers has done nothing either lewd or depraved and thus is neither in violation… nor guilty of a morally turpitudinous act.”

Consistent with its role as advocate for nudity, AANR follows developments such as the *Nunez *case closely.  Moreover, because we believe that enjoyment of one’s own nudity within appropriate settings is a basic and fundamental right, AANR occasionally become involved in such cases.  (We once provided expert testimony in an asylum case before the immigration courts when the petitioner convincingly argued that he would face serious persecution in his home country where he had become a leading nudist figure for which he was beaten and threatened with worse.)

Thank you for providing a credible voice for nudity to those who wouldn’t have a voice without you.

*AANR Team “Bench” a bit Thin This Week*

We appreciate your patience if it has taken a bit longer this week to get back to you with answers, or otherwise not provided the level of service you’re accustomed to receiving from our staff.  A number of our employees have been home sick with an equal number of tough flu and colds, leaving the team’s “bench” a bit thin.  We look forward to having our full complement of staff return soon.

*President’s Day Weekend Reminder*

In observance of the Presidents Day holiday, the AANR office will be closed on Monday, February 15th.  We will resume regular office hours on Tuesday.

*Convention Reservations: Coeur D’Alene Casino*

A block of 30 rooms have been reserved at the Casino for the AANR Convention hosted by Sun Meadow Resort.  For those wishing to stay at the Casino, please call 1-800-523-2464, ask for hotel reservations, and advise them you are part of the “Sun Meadow Resort” block.  The rates at Coeur D’Alene Casino are $89.95/night.  You can begin making reservations now as the block has been set up.

The Web site for the Casino is www.cdacasino.com; however, you *cannot* make these reservations online.

The PR team had their conference call this week and it was terrific.  A lot of ideas were shared by all.  We are starting our planning for various press releases to be sent out.  We will be sending out a club template press release where you can insert the club information.  The Earth Day template will go out around April 1, 2010.

*Earth Day, April 22, 2010*

We are starting our pitch stories for Earth Day.  If your club is planning an event please let me know as soon as possible.  This is not only planting a tree or plant, it can be anything green.  Examples are recycling, solar pools, and highway cleanups.  Anything green.  You can, however, encourage folks to plant trees and plants as well.

We discussed several angles of the CTV Canadian news having to do with nude recreation and the Olympics.

*World Record Skinny-Dip day, July 10, 3pm Eastern Time*

We have started our planning for the World Record Skinny-Dip day.  Once we have finalized the tools for the clubs, we will get them out to you.  We would like this year’s dip to be bigger and better than 2009.  If you have ideas that worked for you, or a suggestion that might work better as well as things that did not work for your club, please let me know.

*Publicity*

Our PR firm, Ypartnership sent out pitch ideas and as a result we received a call from Time magazine.  We are working with Time for a very nice story. No print date as of now.**

*Cruise to Hawaii*

The cruise is set to sail March 13, about a month away.  If you would like your club brochures displayed on board please get them to me at the AANR office as soon as possible.  You will only need to send about 30 or so.  We will be happy to promote your club.  If you plan to be on board the ship, feel free to carry them along with you and look for the AANR table on the sea days.

AANR Weekly Report 2/5/2010

By admin at 4:08 pm on February 6, 2010 | No comments

*Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director*

*Special Thanks to Cypress Cove*

We would like to extend our very deepest appreciation to Dean, Barbara, and Ted Hadley, as well as the entire staff of Cypress Cove resort for doing an excellent job hosting the 2010 mid-winter meeting of the AANR Board.  We especially appreciated celebrating Gasparilla (pirate) weekend with you!

*New Forum on aanr.com *

An election forum has been created on the AANR Web site for use during election years, and the current legislation has been posted. Members are encouraged to post their comments at: http://blog.aanr.com/2010/02/05/proposed-bylaw-amendments/.

*Chicago** Tribune Publishes Story on Nakation Travel*

A press release issued several weeks ago by AANR’s public relations firm at Ypartnership encouraged air travelers to save on checked baggage fees by packing light and taking a nakation.  The story substantially helped boost traffic to the aanr.com Web site this week.

You can catch the online version here:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/travel/sc-trav-0126-nakation-20100127,0,5294475.story

Another link from the Chicago Tribune story is in the attached PDF.

*Olympics Story*

Another AANR press release issued this month references the historical tradition of nudity within the first Olympic Games…a very timely topic!  It has resonated with media outlets within the U.S. and Canada.  Here’s a sampling of the coverage:

*AANR Helping Members and Clubs*

This week our staff in Kissimmee provided legal assistance and information to members and clubs in need in the following ways:

- Sent on-demand copies of key case precedents and guidance to a member from the Southwest facing termination from her job after supervisors claimed that mentioning nudism to a co-worker was “sexual harassment.”

- Rushed a kit of legal precedents, expert opinion research, and important public relations materials to a member in the Mid-Atlantic.  The member’s adult son is in hot water over nude pictures that he took of his six year old daughter.  We have also arranged to confer with the attorneys involved in the case.

- Our office also offered crisis management assistance to a club in the Midwest following the arrest of one of its members.  This assistance included media talking points, tips for communicating with club members, as well as working with law enforcement.

*Suite C Getting Minor Renovation*

* *We’re currently in the process of adding coats of fresh paint and trim, as well as other touches, to Suite C of the office complex.  Drawing on some very talented “teen power,” we’re holding costs down while getting this space in showcase condition for future rental.  This is important as rental income helps fund important Association work, in addition to what is collected from dues, donations, and other support.

*Mark Your Calendars Now For the Skinny-Dip*

On July 10, 2010, AANR will try to beat its own world record for the most people simultaneously skinny-dipping. A total of 13,648 participants skinny-dipped in 143 locations throughout North America in 2009.  Watch for more information in The Bulletin and on www.aanr.com.

*MARNA Swim on February 6* *The swim may have to be cancelled if the weather predictions hold true. Please e-mail the club at *marnaswimsinmd@yahoo.com or call 410/949-5391 before attending tomorrow.

*Linda Berry, Director of Publications*

*The Bulletin*

The March issue is in production and will go to the printer on Wednesday of next week.

*The E-Bulletin*

Subscribers of the E-Bulletin had a real treat with this week’s edition that included a classic Bud Lite commercial about an office overachiever who organized a clothing drive for co-workers with the promise of a Bud Light for every article of clothing donated. Sign up now at www.aanr.com.

*North American Guide to Nude Recreation—Going, Going, Gone*

There is a limited quantity of the 23rd editions available, so please purchase yours before they are gone. At this time, there are no plans to produce another Guide.

*Carolyn Hawkins, Public Relations Coordinator*

*New Sponsor*

We have a new sponsor to add to our other member benefits—“Just Brew It” Coffee.  Watch for the link on our Web site shortly.  You will be able to purchase coffee giving AANR a few dollars back.  We need your support.

*Cruise to Hawaii*

The board meeting is over, and now it is time to get ready for fun stuff and sail to Hawaii with Bare Necessities.

* *

The cruise is set to sail March 13, about a month away.  If you would like your club brochures displayed on board please get them to me at the AANR office as soon as possible.  You will only need to send about 30 or so.  We will be happy to promote your club.  If you plan to be on board the ship, feel free to carry them along with you and look for the AANR table.
