Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director

A Warm Thank-You

A warm thank-you is extended to Brenda and Gary Spangler and Jim Bishop and the staff and volunteers at Oaklake Trails for hosting a truly outstanding and memorable convention that was enjoyed by the AANR Board, staff, and membership. Look for convention coverage in the October issue of The Bulletin.

Attached, you will find my Executive Director’s Report that was presented at convention.

Congratulations!

On August 4, 2009, the Lake Como Co-op, Inc. property was certified by the Florida Division of Forestry as a Stewardship Forest. Lake Como is the first nudist resort in Florida to achieve this certification.

US Air has partnered with Club Orient in St. Martin. According to Club Orient, they are the first nudist resort to be a recommended resort on a major airline’s Web site.

The American Nudist Research Library has been named the Best Research Foundation in the Best of Orlando 2009 publication. The newspaper states, “…the ANRL was created to preserve the history of the social nudist movement in North America and throughout the world.”

AANR Convention 2009 – Oaklake Trails

Thank you to all the staff, volunteers, and members who made our stay at Oaklake Trails Naturist Resort (www.oaklaketrails.com) such a wonderful experience.  The resort is absolutely breathtaking with an abundance of open space and trails, located in the rolling hills of Oklahoma with plenty of green grass, oak groves, and all the woodland creatures who roam/fly within the park’s parameters.  Everyone was so helpful and attentive to making the AANR Convention a tremendous success!

Government Affairs discussions were passionate and thoughtful.  My message was that great work is being done within The Naturist Society (TNS) and AANR through their government affairs teams, respectively, the Naturist Action Committee (NAC) and our Government Affairs Team (GAT).  Both teams of volunteers are working towards the preservation of nude recreation, and we all need to be mindful of this effort when communicating our opinions at the poolside and online.  One attendee identifying himself as a “NACer” appreciated the urge to have all those involved and on the sidelines be respectful of the hard work being done by both organizations.

The GAT Auction was a big success again this year.  Special acknowledgement is given to club Auction Coordinator Dennis Duncan for all his efforts in the months before the event through to the auction close.  Dennis played a major role to ensure that every auction item was collected, logged, and safely stored.  Thank you, Dennis, for making it such a smooth event from start to finish!

There were 120 Silent Auction items and six Live Auction items.  The auctions brought in $8,878 in proceeds, plus $2,000 for the SMS Society fundraiser.  A total of $10,878 will benefit the work of the AANR Government Affairs program.  A sincere thank you to all the donors and bidders who contributed!

AANR-NW GAT Solicits Volunteers for a Fun Day at Rooster Rock Nude Beach

Save-the-Date:  August 25th Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Submitted by Shirley Gauthier, Oregon State GA Coordinator

Volunteers will be joining the Rooster Rock park hosts for a fun day at the beach.  This is a great opportunity to combine a fun day at the beach and support the Rooster Rock State Park staff in greeting visitors and handing out the new beach cards.  The object of the beach day is to promote and raise awareness that public indecency will not be tolerated at Rooster Rock State Park.  Your volunteer time can include a swim, hike, or walk around the island.

Volunteers simply greet visitors and pass out the new cards.  The new cards include the Oregon Statute definition for public indecency and contact numbers for the Multnomah County Sheriff (503) 823-3333 and the Oregon State Police (800) 452-7888.

It’s easy!  Just pack up your towel, sunscreen, lunch, and water and meet us at Rooster Rock State Park at the entrance to the clothing-optional beach at 10 a.m.

Remember that every person you come in contact with is a potential club, resort, and/or AANR member.

A huge thank you to the volunteers who have already contributed to the success of the beach card project!

For further information or to confirm you can volunteer, contact Shirley Gauthier at sherbog@msn.com

Assateague Island Fall Clean-up and Maryland Coastal Day

Submitted by Ray Simpson, Maryland State GA Coordinator

Advance registration is now open for volunteers to help at the Assateague Island Beach Clean-up on Saturday, September 19 and show how much we nudists care about this wonderful beach area.  This is a CLOTHING REQUIRED event.

When? Saturday, September 19, 2009
Where? Assateague Island National Seashore
Assateague Island National Seashore entrance fee waived

Meet at the North Beach parking lot (first left after the entrance booth)
Clean-up begins at 9 a.m.

Beach-lovers will gather on Assateague Island to comb the beach. But they won’t be collecting seashells, or even scouting for wild ponies. These volunteers will don work gloves and set out with trash bags to clean up the coast. The event coincides with Maryland Coast Day, so volunteers at Assateague Island State Park can participate in Coast Day festivities immediately after the clean-up. Coast Day features live music, local cuisine, crafts for the kids, and lots of fun interactive exhibits.

Be sure to bring a hat, sunscreen, bug repellent, and gloves (if desired).

To sign up and for additional information concerning this event, contact Ray Simpson at Govenmentaffairsmd@aanr-east.com or phone 301-399-9338. Please include your name, e-mail address and phone number when signing up. We will need this information to contact you in case of any last minute updates or changes.

Why Your AANR Membership Matters

Excerpt from the Executive Director’s Report presented at the AANR Convention 2009 *

AANR’s Mission…

The Association has long believed that the benchmark for evaluating whether a year has been successful is to measure activity against its mission statement.  Let’s review that mission:

…to advocate for nude recreation and nudity within appropriate settings and to inform society of the benefits of such through ongoing membership growth.

Breaking the mission into smaller parts, we find the following critical passages:

Advocacy — It includes not only protecting and defending the cause of nude recreation, but also serving as its voice, the way that an attorney advocates for a client.  That means being pro-active too… seeking out opportunities to leverage the relationships that our volunteers, members, and clubs have with policy makers to gain more ground.

Nude Recreation and nudity within appropriate settings — Our members enjoy nude recreation in their favorite clubs, traditional nude beaches and swimming holes, and their own backyards.  As it is not possible to foster an appreciation for recreating in the nude if our culture persistently rejects nudity and the human body itself, AANR often finds itself providing the voice for sane dialog on that topic.  Finally, we observe the critical distinction between places where nudity is, and is not, appropriate.  At times that means stating, publicly if necessary, that there are things nudists should not do.

Informing Society — In shorthand, we call this function the Public Relations team.  And in more “traditional” days public relations meant sending press releases, conducting interviews, or giving tours.  However, now it’s just as common for the team to use social networking sites like Facebook and YouTube to inform.  Much like military strategists use aircraft and artillery to support a good infantry, you will find a public relations thread running through most 2009 activity.

Ongoing Membership Growth — Often the very best way to explain why nude recreation is so special to an “audience” is to get them to experience it themselves.  For AANR, that includes making members who over time visit nude destinations and events, and experience others vicariously in the pages of The Bulletin and the E-Bulletin.  Membership growth frequently translates into growth in financial support, making it possible to do more of the important work described above.

Trustees and Clubs Weekly Report

July 31, 2009

Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director

Family Nudity is the Topic du Jour

Who knew that an article appearing two weeks ago in The New York Times titled “When Do They Need a Fig Leaf?” about parental attitudes toward nudity and children would generate so much discussion? From journalists to child experts to everyday people, it seems everyone has an opinion about whether it is proper to be nude in front of one’s own children at home, for the kids to be nude, what to do about guests, and whether romping in the backyard sprinkler au naturel is okay.

For those of you who saw the original Times piece

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/16/garden/16nudity.html?_r=1 , the letters to the editor which appeared days later and included an “official” response from AANR

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/23/garden/23letters-NUDEORNOT_LETTERS.html

or the reader comments on the Times website there are many words from parents and professionals alike in which to find comfort.

The same is true for opinions on a Today Show television segment. And “spinoff” stories appearing in other media spurred by the intensity of interest in this topic…

The Salt Lake Tribune

http://www.sltrib.com/ci_12911811

The Washington Post

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/parenting/2009/07/nudity_in_children.html

The San Francisco Chronicle

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfmoms/detail?entry_id=43768

Politics Daily

The Daily Sound

Examiner.com

http://www.examiner.com/x-17789-Salt-Lake-City-Single-Moms-Examiner~y2009m7d27-Do-you-let-your-kids-run-naked

Clearly, there are many people who may not consider themselves nudists who believe that nudity is a natural, healthy choice for families.

However, you owe it to yourselves and your clubs to peruse the comments, quips, and in a few cases vitriolic outbursts, from those who disagree with family nudity of any kind.  A range of objections from claims it is unsanitary—just about every news article, it seems, had to include some jarring mention of toddlers taking an unexpected whiz on the lawn—to immoral, rude, even outright dangerous to allow any nudity beyond individual showering.

This speaks to an issue that may be lost in the very true statistics we often cite about how many North Americans have gone skinny-dipping, or think beaches should be set aside for nude bathing:  the vehement, even chauvinist attitudes of those who disapprove of nudity.  In their exaggerated reports, refusal to consider facts, and protests that they “DON’T care how families do things in Europe,” one understands why their must be organizations like AANR, its regions, and clubs to provide a credible voice to counter bald assertions and “what ifs.”

Thank you for all that you do to support our Association.  Please remember stories like this the next time someone poolside asks, “Why do nudists need AANR?”

National Conference of State Legislatures a Great Success

I want to personally thank AANR PR Chair Susan Weaver; Myra Mesher of Sunny Rest Resort & Campground in Palmerton, Pennsylvania; Russell (a new volunteer on our Government Affairs Team who I’ll refer to by first name for the moment); and my daughter, Alexandra, who joined me in staffing the Association’s booth last week at NCSL in Philadelphia.

A complete write up of our work at the Conference with accompanying photos will appear in the October 2009 issue of The Bulletin.  Just a few highlights here may help demonstrate why this year’s event was especially effective:

- In all, we distributed about 3,000 lapel pins to attendees.  Although some visitors to our booth took several pins, the number is especially meaningful considering that there were about 5,500 registrants.  It also rivals the number of contacts made by groups and companies who purchased much, much larger exhibition space as confided to me during an exhibitor’s meeting.

- Increasingly, this conference provides an excellent opportunity to speak with officials in CANADIAN government.  In fact, there were just as many (perhaps more) provincial leaders in Philadelphia as from among states.  We supplied each Canadian visitor to our booth with a current list of AANR clubs, and pointed out locations of clubs on the map on the reverse side of that list.  All the while, we answered numerous questions.

- Susan and I had especially meaningful conversations with lawmakers and staff from three states where nudity measures are a front-burner subject.

- If the importance of having a presence at NCSL is to be judged by the company one keeps, consider that the American Automobile Association (pressing for motorist safety), the National Rifle Association, Ringling Bros (animal treatment), Wells Fargo (finance laws) and more recently M&M Mars (addressing candy sales and nutrition in schools) and Wal-Mart (local objections to stores), and over 200 other industries and groups have made a point to be there for a variety of reasons.

- Here’s a factoid:  Did you know that one prominent industry association spends over $150,000 per year in labor costs just having its booth assembled, wired, and lighted for this opportunity to meet with lawmakers for three days? It’s true!  And that figure does not include the actual cost of the booth, shipping materials, airfares, lodging, or exhibit space rental.  Your AANR team achieves a similar number of legislative contacts each year as that industry group. Yet by assembling a modest (but highly effective) 10-foot by 10-foot booth ourselves, using help from local volunteers like Myra and Russell, and inexpensive but-oh-so-collectible lapel pins with a different design each year, AANR makes those contacts for less than $10,000 after accounting for all expenses!

- AANR commanded a lion’s share of media coverage; we were specifically told by conference staff that we had made the most—and best—use of the conference Press Room to meet reporters, make our press release available, and promote our work than any other organization.  A story that began on the cover of the business section of the Philadelphia Inquirer last week (link provided in last week’s report) may be just the beginning as we spoke with many reporters.

Convention Just Around the Corner!

One week from Sunday begins the “Celebration of Our Heritage” as we gather at Oaklake Trails in Depew, Okalahoma.  I am very much looking forward to seeing many of you there!  Special thanks to Jim Bishop, Gary and Brenda Spangler, and the team at Oaklake for all of the hard work that has gone into preparation of this event.

We’re delighted to welcome back Tilley Endurables, makers of the world famous Tilley hats, and New Belgium Brewing’s Skinny Dip Beer as corporate sponsors this year.

We’re also especially pleased to be offering a comprehensive seminar on improving the comfort and security of our younger club guests prepared by Darkness to Light (D2L).  D2L specializes in member and youth protection training and is a major provider of such training to sports programs, school districts.  Our affiliation with D2L will enable the Association and its regions to build on what is already a strong track record, and we hope to see your club and region leaders at this session on Tuesday morning during convention.

Attached is something that you might enjoy reading. This came out today in north Florida and Alabama and will be appearing between August and September in 7-11 states. This is the third article that Thunder Roads has done to cover Bare Buns Bikers and AANR. Having a two-page spread in a national publication is positive for both AANR as well as BBB.

California State Parks Closures—Update

From the California State Parks Foundation (http://www.calparks.org)

July 28, 2009, “the Governor signed a revised Fiscal Year 2009-2010 state budget, based on the package of bills sent to him by the Legislature on July 24. In using his blue-pencil veto authority the Governor exacted an additional $6.2 million cut to the state park system, bringing the total General Fund cut to $14.2 million. It is expected that this will result in the closure of more than 100 of California’s 279 state parks, more than 1/3 of the state park system! Take action now to help stop these closures!

The Department of Parks and Recreation has not yet released a list of which parks will be included on this closure list or when exactly park closures will start taking place…  The news of park closures is not only devastating to park users, but also to local economies. Please take a moment to send a message to your legislators urging them to take action to stop these closures. Our state parks need your support now more than ever before!

Thank you for your efforts to help us Save Our State Parks!”

Oregon – Rooster-Sauvie Volunteers Sponsor Beach Cleanup

Submitted by Shirley Gauthier, Oregon State GA Coordinator

Escape the heat by joining the Rooster-Sauvie Volunteers nudist club affiliated with AANR for two clothing-optional beach cleanups in the Portland area.

August 1—Saturday starting at 9 a.m. at Rooster Rock State Park clothing-optional area. (http://www.stateparks.com/rooster_rock.html) Volunteers will meet at the East end parking area at the entrance to the clothing-optional area.  The cleanup and registration will be held on Sand Island.  A hotdog barbecue and afternoon of swimming will follow the morning beach cleanup.

August 2—Sunday starting at 10 a.m. on Sauvie Island at entrance #3, volunteers will gather for a morning litter patrol, hotdog barbecue, and day of swimming and beach games.

Oregon – VOTE for SOLV

Submitted by Shirley Gauthier

AANR members and others have the opportunity to vote for SOLV (http://www.solv.org) in a contest to win $5,000.  SOLV’s mission “builds community through volunteer action to preserve this treasure called Oregon.” Simply go to http://www.rivernetwork.org/ forms/vote-5000 to vote.  AANR has for many years held SOLV “Adopt-A-River” adoptions for Rooster Rock clothing-optional beach and Sauvie Island clothing-optional beach.  Glassbar Island Nude Beach Volunteers, an AANR affiliated club, holds the SOLV adoption for Glassbar Island State Park that includes a nude beach.

We now have the opportunity to vote for SOLV and show our nudist support.  By taking the time to vote, you can also enter to win a rafting trip.

AANR GAT Auction Items Benefit AANR Members!

Thanks so much for your generous support of the American Association for Nude Recreation. Many members have contributed donated items annually to our Silent and Live Auction.  It is due to your previous gifts that AANR is able to continue this vital program to “advocate nudity and nude recreation in appropriate settings, and educate and inform society of the value and enjoyment of such…”  Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

This year the AANR GAT Auction will be held at the AANR 78th Convention at beautiful Oaklake Trails in the Southwest region.  All auction proceeds will continue to provide our members and all like-minded people the benefit of AANR’s advocating for nude recreation and responding to issues that can affect our recreational choice.

Would you be willing to participate at the same level of sponsorship (or greater) as you have in the past?  Are you interested in contributing for the first time?   Not only are resort trips and sunbathing towels favorite items, but personal picnic baskets, regional wines and homemade articles have been proven to bring in great bids.  If it’s easier, you can send a cash donation to AANR and in the memo note “AANR GAT Auction.”

Please send your gifts by August 8, 2009. All the proceeds of your gifts go to support the AANR Government Affairs Program, a program critical to the advocacy and preservation of nude recreation.  We look forward to your donation to support the Government Affairs program this year.

Send your auction items with the attached auction form to:

Oaklake Trails Naturist Park

Depew, OK 74028

For more information, call the AANR office at 800-TRY-NUDE or e-mail Debra Sue at debra_sue@mindspring.com.

“Auction Angels” Needed for GAT Auction

The AANR Convention Auction Team is looking for a few good “angels” to assist in the auction which is scheduled for Friday, August 14th.  No experience is necessary.  Assist with prep work, setup, assisting guests during the auction and checkout.  It’s fun and rewarding.  Contact Debra Sue for more info: debra_sue@mindspring.com.

AANR World Record Skinny-Dip Day Tomorrow!

This week has been very exciting at AANR and in clubs throughout the U.S. and Canada.  Media ranging from online, print, radio, and television broadcasts are bringing reports of the AANR World Record Skinny-Dip.
Carolyn Hawkins has prepared a very long list of coverage below, although we are probably still not cataloguing every mention.

USA Today, the nation’s largest newspaper, carried a story about the skinny-dip on Page 1 of the Life/Weekend section.  That’s particularly effective because the Friday edition remains in newspaper boxes, at newsstands, and in airports, McDonald’s restaurants, hotels, and elsewhere throughout the entire weekend.

Please accept my very best wishes for a successful, fun, and safe event at your favorite
club or beach.  My family and I will be joining what we hope will be thousands of visitors to Haulover Beach in Miami.

CaliforniaParks and Recreation – Your Opinions are Being Heard!

Submitted by Alonzo Stevens for publication in The Bulletin (August 2009)

In June, the Naturist Action Committee (NAC), the government affairs arm of The Naturist Society (TNS) released two NAC alerts “on the status of San Onofre State Beach and NAC’s ongoing effort to assure that it remains open for clothing-optional recreation.”  These alerts prompted me to reflect on several past editions of The Bulletin; while remembering the words of several AANR members asking, “Why can’t the two organizations work together?”  There have been many times when we have successfully worked together, but in regards to California State Parks and the methods that are used to protect the Cahill Policy in the essence and good faith it was written, AANR Government Affairs and NAC vary in their approach. I stand behind taking the high road to protect nude recreation on public lands, in our clubs, and homes for all nudists.

One fact is apparent; people are reading and talking about The Bulletin and other AANR publicationsThe AANR Weekly Report, which is electronically published every Friday to the AANR Trustees and Clubs, provides a weekly summary of AANR activities including government affairs, public relations, etc.  You can access the weekly report by joining the forum at the Naturist Family Network (NFN) at www.naturistfamily.net where the reports are posted and available for free to all nudists and nudist-curious.  NFN is an AANR-affiliated, nonlanded club which is currently seeking similar status with The Naturist Society.  Other sources include various Yahoo groups and mailing lists throughout North America.

NOTE: More detailed announcements will be made in this publication throughout the next month regarding this important and historical movement.

Assateague Island Coastal Day Fall Cleanup 2009

Submitted by Ray Simpson, Maryland Government Affairs Coordinator

Advance registration is now open for volunteers to help at the Assateague Island beach cleanup on Saturday, September 19, and show how much nudists care about this wonderful beach area.  This is a clothing-required event.

Ø      Assateague Island National Seashore (entrance fee waived)

Ø      North Beach parking lot (1st left after the entrance booth)

AANR Weekly Report For July 2, 2009

By Paul at 3:25 am on July 3, 2009 | No comments

Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director
Wishing a Happy, Safe, and Successful Independence Day Holiday to All

This weekend marks the traditional celebration of Independence Day and a major event among most AANR clubs.  We extend to you our very best wishes for good weather and fun.

In observance of the holiday, our offices will be closed tomorrow so we are bringing you this week’s report a day early.  We will resume regular operations at regular times beginning Monday.

Reports of our family members, friends, and other men and women serving in Iraq, Afghanistan, elsewhere overseas, and in the armed forces here and in Canada, remind us that freedom, while priceless, is certainly not free.  We publicly thank those who have served, and also those in civilian government-from police officers to firefighters and paramedics-who help to preserve peace and freedom also.

Celebrations such as Independence Day also provide a convenient opportunity to remind the nudist community that preserving our liberty to enjoy nude recreation does not come without challenges.  There are several examples from last week and this week in which AANR has been called to assist members in need in the following areas:

Adverse Employment Consequences

AANR fielded a call from a member couple after the wife lost a steady business arrangement over nude recreation.  A client had called the wife’s supervisor to complain that she had seen a copy of The Bulletin-even though the complainant had been in the wife’s vehicle and had gone through her personal effects!  Because the complainant also made several materially false statements, we have placed the couple in contact with legal counsel specializing in defamation actions.  We also prepared a legal analysis that the members can take with them during the initial meeting with their attorney.

Nudist Grandparents

When their daughter and son-in-law divorced, an AANR member couple welcomed their daughter to stay with them for several months while she made permanent living arrangements and got back on her feet.  Our members live within a small nudist community.  As a means of re-opening custody and child support payment issues, the ex son-in-law filed an emergency motion on the basis that the children had been exposed to nudism.

For the past three weeks we have been working with these AANR members and their attorney, including telephone interviews and providing written material.

Long-Time Member’s Final Wishes Not Respected by Funeral Home

Today we received a call from the adult son of a long-time member in the upper Midwest.  He advised us that this member had passed away from cancer.  While we were very saddened with this news, we were also troubled by what the son relayed about the funeral home’s deliberate ignoring of his father’s last wishes to be interred peacefully resting au natural.without advising the family and on its own initiative.

While we recognize (as did the caller) that laws or cannons of the industry may dictate what may ultimately be done in such cases, we are also in the process of preparing a letter to the company to stress the sensitivity which must be shown to family members trying to do their very best to respect something that was important to a loved one.

Vacation Thwarted in a Most Unwelcome Way

Today, AANR Member/Club Liaison Terry Justice and I rushed electronic copies of materials to assist a family which was planning to visit an AANR club over the holiday weekend.  After one of their children mentioned the family’s plans-with, from what we understand, was positive enthusiasm-to a third party it has triggered a formal inquiry by a youth protective agency.

World Record Skinny-Dip Publicity Incredible This Week

The report from Carolyn Hawkins below catalogs the publicity surrounding the World Record Skinny-Dip that will occur in just two more weeks.  She provides a comprehensive list, but I would just like to discuss one item as an example of the significant impact that the event is making.

As I consulted the statistics for visits to the www.aanr.com Web site yesterday, I noted that we received approximately 8,000 referrals in a single day from a link on the Sports Illustrated Web site.  Collectively, we received over 10,000 visitors to aanr.com that day. That is more than twice what we would average on a busy day during summer season.  It represents new people reached with the message of nude recreation and many new prospects for your clubs.

I would like to publicly thank all of those who are making the World Record Skinny-Dip happen and, in particular, Randy Savage who established the official arrangement with Guinness World Records™.

Great Outdoors Week 2009

Printed by: American Recreation Coalition

Washington, D.C. – Hundreds of recreation community leaders, allies and friends groups gathered in Washington, D.C. to participate in meetings, events and celebrations of the significant contributions of the recreation community during Great Outdoors Week 2009 (June 7-13).

Accomplishments of Beacon Award recipients, achievements of the Recreational Trails Program, the status of the Scenic Byways Program, the second National Get Outdoors Day, the need to connect children to nature and more were addressed in gatherings during the week.  The American Recreation Coalition’s Legends Awards honoring the outstanding efforts and contributions of exemplary federal agency employees and recreation community leaders also contributed to the Week’s excitement.

Great Outdoors Week is coordinated by the American Recreation Coalition (ARC) and includes events co-hosted by more than a dozen national organizations and federal agencies.  Great Outdoors Week is the central feature of Great Outdoors Month, a month-long celebration of outdoor recreation that also highlights National Trails Day (June 6), National Fishing and Boating Week (June 6-14), National Get Outdoors Day (June 13), the Great American Backyard Campout (June 27) and more.

13th Annual Cape Cod Beach Clean-up Update

Submitted by:  Bill Falconer, Cape Cod Beach Volunteers

The unpredictable New England weather and economy may have prevented some fair weather volunteers from the clean-up. Thankfully Old Sol appeared and shone brightly to the conclusion of another successful event. Officially 51 volunteers registered at the Herring Cove Beach parking lot in Provincetown, Massachusetts on June 13th. Another half dozen pitched in but wished to be anonymous.

The Sunchasers registration table was operational by 8:00 a.m. with volunteers close at hand. Soon the rangers appeared with instructions for the event and trash bags to be filled. AANR provided volunteer buttons which were issued for later use as meal tickets.

With assigned areas, the volunteers were off to commence a three-hour, five-mile beach makeover. Other non-nudist beach user groups, to gain favor with the park rangers, are copying our successful efforts. So it was no surprise that a shore fishing group held a clean-up two weeks prior. However, we still retrieved three truckloads of trash and debris, newly deposited or missed.

Volunteers young and aging came from far and wide representing Sandy Terraces, Solair, Cedar Waters, Sunchasers, Abbott’s Glen, Berkshire Vista, Pilgrim Naturist, Garden of Eden, Bare Bottom Beach Club, AANR Associates and unaffiliated friends. All returned by 1:00 p.m. to take part in the Thank You BBQ of hotdogs, burgers, sausages, French fries and cold sodas courtesy of J&J Seafood with donations from AANR-East, Bare Bottom Beach Club, P Cross and the Sunchasers.

Our purpose continues to seek modification or repeal of the ordinance banning nude beach use on the Cape and possibly a dedicated beach. Thanks to all who are working to make this possible.

AANR Weekly Report For June 19, 2009

By Paul at 12:19 am on June 23, 2009 | No comments

Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director
Reminder of Why Washington Matters

As you know, last week 10 members of AANR and I wrapped up visits to Capitol Hill along with meetings with officials from several public lands agencies and even the judiciary in Washington, D.C.

Some may wonder why these visits are important. After all, most of the issues our clubs and members face occur at the local and state level. Washington seems far away.  And federal regulations don’t seem to affect them much.  Why spend time and money trying to establish relationships and position ourselves as an expert resource there?

I’d like to share a true story from among my experiences last week which may help answer that question.  It does not involve the subject of nude recreation, but is quite illustrative.

While in the office of a member of congress, I observed three men having an “animated” discussion with a staff person.  I listened with one ear as I wrote notes on material I was dropping off with the front desk.  As the discussion progressed, the three men sounded more and more desperate.

“This is killing our business.”

“We are already suffering from a downturn in the economy and now customers refuse, or are being directed to refuse, our service.”

“Most of these businesses are just like ours.  We own or lease just one vehicle and use it in our local community.  But the federal government is putting us out of business.”

Who were these men?  From what I could gather of the conversation, one was a private pilot, the other two drove “black cars.”  All three were from a place far from the marble-lined halls of Washington.

You are familiar with black cars drivers.  They are the people who pick up travelers for whom appointments have been made at the airport.  Usually you see them in the baggage claim area holding cardboard signs with names scrawled on them.

Their troubles come in the wake of recent public uproar about over-paid banking, finance, and auto executives who have sought federal “bailout” money through things like TARP (the Troubled Assets Relief Program). Washington has grilled such executives over expensive perks like private jets and limousines; scorn that began with such excesses eventually reached to the simple private aircraft chartered to reach remote destinations and black cars which are usually only modestly priced more than other forms of transportation.

New measures pending in Congress would prohibit the use of such services by any institution receiving TARP type assistance if there is any cheaper means of travel available.  Problem is, even those who have not applied for federal help are directing personnel to avoid services like black cars anticipating that they may need bailouts in the future.

However one may personally feel about the issue, it makes the point that the nation’s capitol can have a powerful business-ending impact on a very local one-person car business. (You’ll remember that it was finance, insurance, and auto executives seeking help, not private pilots and drivers.)

Let’s suppose we could turn back the clock about four years and go to those same drivers and pilots.  Suppose we asked them to travel as unpaid volunteers to Washington to share their stories during pro-active office visits.  Or to pay membership dues and donate or raise money to send other volunteers.  What kind of responses do you think we’d get?

“Why do I care about Washington, D.C.?  The local license fee that the City of ____ charges me is much more important.”

“What would we do there?  Put a face on drivers for some Congress person I don’t even know.  For what?  A few pennies on a federal gas tax or something?”

“We would never have an issue.  Congress couldn’t or wouldn’t dare to touch our business.  They probably need our cars.  Besides, if there’s ever an issue we’ll go see Congress then.”

When the American Association for Nude Recreation reports news of Washington visits I sometimes hear similar talk.

For the three men I observed visiting Congress last week, it may be too late.  The wording affecting their businesses is already in several bills. It happened because anger with a few executives in a few industries was directed at the services they and other business travelers used.  When lawmakers thought of its implications, they saw overpaid executives instead of small business owners.  Or drivers with families to support.  Or the faces that welcome a traveler in a strange town.

With these points in mind, I invite you to read the following article prepared by a Fox News congressional correspondent concerning your AANR GAT Team.  I am very proud of them and I think you should be, too.

AANR Weekly Report for June 5, 2009

By Paul at 5:00 am on June 6, 2009 | No comments

Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director

AANR and Regions to Make Most Significant Effort in Washington to Date

Beginning tomorrow, AANR members representing all regions (with the understandable exception of Canada) will be at our nation’s capital in Washington, D.C.  In all, seven Government Affairs Team members-and an extra spouse or two-will team up with others from Maryland and Virginia. Appointments have been made to meet with dozens of House and Senate offices. In addition, we will make “fly-by” visits to many, many more, stopping to answer questions and drop off literature. In all, we have come prepared with literature for at least 360 visits!

This year through the significant efforts of AANR Public Lands Liaison Steve Hubbard, several meetings have been arranged with top echelons from several agencies with the power to direct the future of nudity on public lands. What’s more, we have even scheduled informal luncheons with some members of the judiciary, so all three branches of government will be reached during the course of our visits.

Finally, we have added a new wrinkle this year by sending out press releases announcing this project to metro-D.C. media.  To date, this has resulted in coverage by The Hill and The Washington Independent The Washington Independent

We have also arranged for an interview with a Georgetown-based publication when we reach Washington.

I want to publicly thank the AANR Government Affairs teams from all regions and, especially, Alonzo and Debra Sue Stevens for an incredible amount of work which has gone into priming us for success.  I will provide details of the trip in a future report.

Should you need to reach me next week, please call the AANR office and ask to speak with my assistant Nanette Wickersham, who will be able to assist you.

SEARCH ENGINE TRAFFIC-MAXIMIZED

Those who have attended recent AANR Board of Trustees meetings know that a significant effort is being made on both our Public Relations and Brand Management fronts to maximize search engine traffic.  Put another way, we want those who consult a search engine to find AANR as a resource quickly. We have been following some excellent advice from Bill Dennis (who started the Captain Jack company) to accomplish that.  Recent efforts include an all-new blog on the aanr.com Web site called “The Alltogether.”

While we admittedly have a long, long way to go, this week we received more proof that such efforts are working.  If you visit the much hailed BING search engine unveiled by Microsoft this week http://www.bing.com and enter the word “nudist,” you will see that AANR is among the top entries.  Reports in the press say that Microsoft will spend between 100 and 200 million dollars advertising and driving traffic to the new search engine, so this is a significant development!  More traffic to aanr.com will, in turn, drive more traffic to club Web sites.

Kudos to Living Waters Spa

Living Waters was recently invited to the California State University to present guest lectures on the concept of nude recreation. This was an incredible opportunity to influence a generation of future leaders and customers. You can find a link to a YouTube video capturing this in Carolyn’s report.

White Tail Resort Makes News

White Tail Resort of Ivor, Virginia, has a story about its open house and art show this weekend, which has been garnering publicity, see

http://www.prweb.com/releases/2009/05/prweb2478244.htm

Finally, be sure to carefully review the report from Carolyn Hawkins below. A floodgate of public relations opportunities opened this week following releases and pitches for the World Record Skinny-Dip.

California Budget Cuts-Closure of State Parks

AANR sent out a CapWiz alert this week to California AANR members who have subscribed through the AANR Members section of the AANR Web site.  We are encouraging ONLY recreationalists in California and others who visit the California state parks to respond to this request.  Please pass this
information on to those who may be interested, nudists and non-nudists!

We MUST STOP the Governor’s plan to close over 200 of our state parks.  Just this week, the Governor announced a new proposal to eliminate state funding for our state park system-which will close more than 80 percent of the 279-unit state park system.  His proposal to cut $143 million from our state parks is 10 times worse than last year’s proposal. California State Parks Foundation (CSPF) is kicking off the Save Our State Parks campaign again,
and we need your help to take action TODAY and tell the Governor and your state legislators that gutting funding to state parks is unacceptable.

State park visitors need to make their voices heard RIGHT NOW.  Your action of contacting your legislators is critical.  To send a message to your legislator and the Governor, please CLICK HERE http://ga3.org/campaign/budget_may09 !  Our friends at the California State Parks Foundation have prepared an easy way for you to voice your opinion.  Please take three minutes to become an advocate for California state parks.

AANR Weekly Report for May 29, 2009

By Paul at 5:00 am on June 1, 2009 | No comments

Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director

AANR Mourns the Loss of a Member and Good Friend

This week we were saddened to hear of the passing of K Mathesius.  Those of you who have been active in the Association’s leadership for some time may recall that K was the Secretary of the Eastern Sunbathing Association for many years and was a much loved and respected supporter of AANR all her life. According to Susan Weaver, she lived at White Thorn and spent winters at Sunsport with her partner of the last few years, Tex.

One saying of K’s was that she often pronounced “AANR” with a soft “a”
sound, so it rhymed with “honor.”  She used this pronunciation because she
said it was an “honor to belong to AANR.”

With Many Thanks for Your Quick Response

Yesterday we distributed an e-mail to all clubs asking for information relating to whether your club is adjacent to any federal lands managed by the U.S. Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management.  Steve Hubbard, AANR Public Lands Liaison, and I would personally like to thank the many of you who responded so quickly with information.  This will be very helpful as we prepare for visits to Washington, D.C., in just over one week.

AANR Helping Members

On Thursday, AANR Club/Member Liaison Terry Justice and I worked with a husband and wife who are members of AANR/AANR-Northwest.  They have been threatened with “legal hassles” by an ex spouse should they continue to attend clubs or practice any nudity in the presence of their daughter.  We have provided written information and discussed legal scenarios with the couple.

MUZAK Update

Those who telephone our offices at 1-800-TRY-NUDE will hear an all-new Muzak greeting if placed on hold.  Set to beach music, the message announces the world record skinny-dip event, provides dates of upcoming summer conventions, and a pitch to join or renew membership.

See You in the Funny Pages

Yesterday’s Beetle Bailey comic strip depicted America’s favorite soldier and an army buddy standing near a sign announcing a nude beach.  While Beetle states that he would prefer to look for a “spectator’s section,” his friend has doffed his shorts and is ready to join in by the second panel.  The online site for this comic lags several weeks behind print content so we are not yet able to provide a link, but perhaps you can check a day-old copy.

If you’re like me, you welcome such developments. As more people are introduced to the concept of nude recreation–whether by hearing about the World Record Skinny-Dip or by reading the funnies at their breakfast table–it helps to create a more receptive audience for our message.

E-Mail Trouble Continues-But on a Smaller Scale

Our webmaster has changed servers, so our IP address had to be changed. Although many providers now recognize our new address, there are still some e-mails that are being kicked back. Please let your friends and clubs know about this problem in case they don’t receive this e-mailed report.

The inbound e-mails are working just fine.

Public Indecency Addressed at Rooster Rock State Park
Submitted by Shirley Gauthier, AANR-NW Public Lands Liaison

SOLV’s “Down By The Riverside” event provided an educational opportunity for Oregon State Park staff, law enforcement, and AANR volunteers to address public indecency concerns.  Rooster-Sauvie Volunteers, a newly formed 100% AANR club, hosted the 14th annual SOLV event.

A Rooster Rock State Park Safety meeting held in 2008 and organized by Park Ranger Lisa Midlam contributed to the creation of a sign advising beach users of indecency laws and the introduction of a visitor beach card.  This meeting included law enforcement officers (state police and Multnomah County Sheriff agencies), state park staff, and AANR members, and addressed public indecency concerns.

The sign and beach cards introduced at the cleanup welcome beach visitors, cite the Oregon State Law on public indecency and make it easy to report illegal or inappropriate behaviors by providing phone numbers for the Multnomah County Sheriff, Oregon State Police, and the Rooster Rock State Park Managers.

Multnomah County Sheriff Deputy Bryan White presented information specifically addressing Public Indecency.  Deputy White explained the law and how visitors can assist law enforcement.  Deputy White made it clear that illegal or sexual behavior will not be tolerated.

AANR is proud to partner with SOLV (http://www.solv.org/ ) and appreciated SOLV Business Manager Denise Smith attending and taking the group photo.  Thanks to Laurel MacMillan of Rural Development Initiatives (RDI) for attending.  RDI (http://www.rdiinc.org/) is a private non-profit organization.

A special thanks to the SOLV staff, Multnomah County Sheriff Deputy Bryan White, Rooster Rock State Park Rangers Mark Stevenson, Lisa Midlam, Glenn Littrell, John Cowan, David Bjorge,  Cassie Bostrom, and Gorge District Manager Kevin Price.

AANR dues-paying members who volunteer their time, energy, and finances are the driving force to promoting and preserving nude recreation.  If you missed this event join the Rooster-Sauvie Volunteers Club, August 1-2, for the AANR beach cleanup weekend at Rooster Rock-Mountaindale Sun Resort (mountaindalesun.com) and Sauvie Island.  Contact rooster.sauvie {at} yahoo.com for details.

Glassbar Island State Park – Cleanup Report for 5/16/09
Submitted by Shirley Gauthier, AANR-NW Public Lands Liaison

Glassbar Island State Park near Eugene, Oregon, became even more user group friendly at the annual SOLV “Down By The Riverside” cleanup on May 16th.   A porta-potty was installed near the nude beach area of the clothing-optional state park.  This is huge history making news for user groups.  Do take the time to do the porta-potty happy dance.

Glassbar Island Nude Beach Volunteers (GINBV) a 100% AANR club registered 29 volunteers.   Chris Orsinger, Executive Director Friends of Buford Park & Mt. Pisgah, shared that “we were glad to lend a hand with habitat enhancement and cleanup at Glassbar Island.  We look forward to collaborating in the future to advance habitat enhancement, especially floodplain restoration work that would improve aquatic habitat and water quality.”  Rick Hammond GINBV Webmaster and cleanup photographer said, “I have never seen such a diverse group at the park as I have this year on sunny days.”

Volunteers removed invasive species, planted six different wildflowers, completed litter patrols, and cleaned land belonging to the state and county.  GINBV President David Rosenblatt asked that a special thanks be given to the SOLV, Oregon State Park Dept., Lane County Waste Dept., Friends of Buford Park & Mt. Pisgah, AANR-NW for providing the hotdog barbecue, and to GINBV members who have worked daily at the park for years.

Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director

Wishing You A Very Happy and Safe Holiday

Memorial Day weekend marks the traditional start of the summer season for many AANR clubs and we want to wish you the very best for a safe holiday with good weather.

We also wish to express our deepest thanks to the men and women who have served, or are currently serving, in the U.S. and Canadian armed forces to protect the freedoms that we enjoy.  We are grateful for your sacrifice and the sacrifices that your families have made.

In observance of the holiday, our office will be closed on Monday, May 25.

e-Mail Trouble

Our webmaster has changed servers, so our IP address had to be changed. We have since learned that some of our e-mails are being kicked back because the provider does not recognize our new IP address. With time this will change, but in the meantime there are a number of people who can’t receive e-mail from us. Please let your friends and clubs know about this problem in case they don’t receive this e-mailed report.

Top Story in the Capitol Journal

In February, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) and legislative leaders thought a slew of hard fought ballot measures would keep the state from falling into insolvency. But with voters poised to reject those measures, the nation’s most populous state may be heading for disaster.

Bills That Are Behind Us For 2009

The following bills have been tracked by your AANR GAT volunteers; this report is an example of the daily information available to GAT.  Nearly 200 bills were actively being monitored during the peak of the 2009 season. Critical bills with varying levels of concern were tracked in this fashion. This process is continuous in monitoring trends and bills that resurface in the State initiated or pop up in a different State in subsequent years. Each state operates within varying time constraints; legislative body and laws differ within those states.  While the bills below have been archived for this year, we will continue to monitor bills similar to those below. Your dues and fundraising efforts fund the important work of serving the meaning of AANR’s mission.
