It’s Great to be Back from a Great Trip

On Tuesday I returned to the AANR office after spending some time with my family on an enjoyable trip back from the convention at Sun Meadow Resort in Idaho.  During the trip home we had an opportunity to see such places as Mt. Rushmore, the famous Wall Drug store in South Dakota, and Hannibal, Missouri…boyhood home of author Samuel Clemens/Mark Twain.

Flying the AANR colors… During our journey home, an interesting thing happened. We had secured a large AANR logo flag to the back of the U-Haul trailer which we towed behind the family’s vehicle while traveling.  Many, many cars and motorcycles who drove by gave us a “thumbs up” of support. A few took pictures or asked us about AANR in parking lots, etc.

On motel, restaurant, and shopping stops, I provided most employees with my business card and a copy of AANR’s beach etiquette card.  I explained that our family had been attending an annual meeting of the American Association for Nude Recreation and that many others passing through may have been on their way to/from the event.  I wanted the company to know the source of much business. (We especially observed this custom when shopping in the locale around Sun Meadow where many businesses expressed appreciation.)

Making friends… On the road, most of the time the business card and brief speech were met with smiles and a follow-up question or two.  However, at two different motels in two different states associated with different national chains, the night manager on duty confided that they, too, visited nude destinations!  One was a current AANR member who regularly reads The Bulletin from cover to cover!  The other had visited Club Orient and Orient Beach in St. Martin on a couple occasions.

I think it is a very promising sign of the times when two out of eight random motels during a trip across country have staff working their desk who have tried, and continue to enjoy nude recreation in AANR-affiliated venues (Note that Club Orient is a participating business with us!)

Moreover, I hope the experience will encourage some of you to mention nudist travel when you’re doing business with others. You may well find, as we do, that people are eager to talk about it, or that you’ll make new friends.

With Deepest Thanks to the Staff and Volunteers of Sun Meadow

The October issue of The Bulletin will feature stories and photos from the spectacular convention that this club hosted where you can see for yourself what an incredible event it was.  For now, I would like to repeat my appreciation to the many volunteers and hard working people at Sun Meadow who made us feel so welcome and gave us such a great experience.  Things were perfect, and we know how much work it takes to make ’em that way.

Welcome President Susan Weaver and the Incoming Board

The Kissimmee staff and I look forward to working with incoming President Susan Weaver and the newly-seated Board of Trustees.  Susan has big shoes to fill left by President John Kinman but we know she is well-prepared, having worked many years with Susan in her role as the Association’s chairperson for Public Relations.

Congratulations, Susan.  Congratulations to our new Board and Committee Chairs.  We will soon be providing an updated directory with full contact information.

Congratulations to AANR Financial Supervisor Cindy Horton…

… Of our staff who received a 2010 President’s Award from John Kinman.  We presented a very well-deserving Cindy with her medallion during a special ceremony at lunch time today.  Best wishes, Cindy.  You deserved this fitting recognition and the whole team is proud of you!

Rooster Rock State Park Clothing Optional Beach-September 25

By admin at 11:23 am on | No comments

AANR-NW volunteers have a brand new event opportunity at Rooster Rock State Park clothing optional beach Saturday, September 25 starting at 9:00 a.m.  Rooster Rock State Park is hosting a SOLV sponsored work party and asking volunteers to gather at the East end area by the restrooms.

AANR holds the Oregon State Park Adopt-A-Park adoption and also the SOLV Adopt-A-River Adoptions.  AANR-NW nudists and others are encouraged to participate in this event to support our adoptions.

Why is SOLV expanding the fall cleanup? For years, SOLV has received requests from volunteers around the state who wanted to help with a fall cleanup, and were unable to join us at the coast. This is a new way for all Oregonians to join generations of SOLV volunteers to get involved, and teach the next generation to care for the health of our local watershed and the beaches we enjoy.

For the first time, SOLV will be expanding this cleanup event in 2010 to include projects along rivers, creeks, lakes and other waterways throughout Oregon and SW Washington. By restoring waterways & cutting off trash upstream, before it reaches the beach, SOLV volunteers will be part of a statewide effort to reduce marine debris and improve inland water and ocean health.

Because this event is on the same weekend as the AANR-NW Board meeting at Kaniksu Ranch north of Spokane, there will be no active AANR-NW leadership present at the event.  Oregon/Washington club members are invited to participate in this clean-up as well as associate members.  We would hope that those volunteering will introduce themselves as AANR-NW members.

Message from Bob Campbell

The AANR-Western Canada Convention ended on a phenomenally high PR note.  On Sunday, Global Media did a short story in the Regina paper and a 30 second news spot on Regina TV.  Shortly after the television crew returned to the station on Sunday, Mark Huenison, Convention Chair, received a phone call from the station asking if they could return Monday to shoot more video and get additional interviews.  The result of that second visit was a 2:21 story on prime time evening national news.  The story was carried across Canada in the 5:30 p.m. time slot and was repeated on some of the stations at 10:00 p.m.  The news story and the video can be found by following the link below.

AANR Weekly Report 7/30/2010

By admin at 12:37 pm on August 2, 2010 | No comments

*Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director*

c/o execasst@aanr.com

*Bound for Canada*

Today I am traveling to the AANR-Western Canada Convention at Green Haven Sun Club, which I am very much looking forward to attending. There is a lot to celebrate in Canada, including the recent great publicity success that Wreck Beach in Vancouver, British Columbia, enjoyed during the AANR World Record Skinny-Dip. I will also be reporting on a number of successful contacts made with Canadian officials during the National Conference of State Legislatures this week.

*National Conference of State Legislatures*

Throughout this week I have been attending the NCSL in Louisville, Kentucky, along with AANR President-Elect Susan Weaver. My daughters, Alix and Maddie, also leant a helping hand as we staffed a booth for the 17thconsecutive year at this very important conference.

*Overview.* According to personal conversations I had with NCSL staff, approximately 4,500 lawmakers, staff, and fellow exhibitors attended this year’s event. The guest speakers included U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. True to NCSL’s bipartisan philosophy, they also included Sen. Mitch McConnell and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, plus a Major General just back from duty in Iraq.

*Other Exhibitors.* To give you an idea of how significant an opportunity this presents to reach influential policymakers with a message, one need only consider the caliber of corporations who have made it a point to be there recently: Coca-Cola (to combat recent attempts to place a “sin tax” on sugared drinks much as tobacco is taxed), Wal-Mart (to deal with increasingly difficult zoning issues and “no Wal-Mart here” campaigns), M&M Mars (because the sale of candy in schools and youth programs are drawing fire as obesity rates climb), Wells Fargo (the home mortgage crisis and banking regulation), to name a few.

It doesn’t stop with corporations: the American Automobile Association (AAA), the ASPCA and Humane Society, plus the American Cancer Society and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) were also there.

The Federal Government and Unions do not miss the event either: The U.S. Dept. of Education, U.S. Army, AFSCME, and SECIU unions (who represent some of the largest blocks of workers) all make a point to be there.

*Influence.* But here’s a fact that may surprise you: Your American Association for Nude Recreation has been consistently attending for longer than ANY of the above-mentioned groups.

That’s correct! AANR’s “seniority” places us 37th on the all-time list of those who have been reaching influentials there. Only a handful of groups (including the National Rifle Association, the pharmaceutical industry, and both sides of the tobacco debate) have an edge on AANR. To give you an idea of just what that means, consider that AARP is about 20 positions below us. Wells Fargo ranks 112; Wal-Mart, M&M Mars, and Coca Cola do not even make it into the top 125.

That seniority represents much more than bragging rights. We receive very high priority in selecting next year’s booth location. (We will be directly at the main entrance to the exhibit hall in San Antonio for 2011.) It also means that AANR has woven the subject of nude recreation into the very fabric of the American political scene.

*Policy.* There may be an occasional smirk from a “rookie” attending for the first time. It is also true that we bring a welcomed smile and bit of humor to sessions that involve subjects as intense as the banking crisis, huge budget deficits within states, and immigration. But veteran attendees and the thousands who come by AANR’s booth to talk with us also know we mean serious business. We discuss the challenges of zoning, liquor licensing, nudist publishing, and how nude recreation is sometimes confused with adult entertainment.

Our volunteers help change mindsets. In a few cases we have made AANR members out of lawmakers, staff, and vendors… Yes. Yes, we have! They have stopped by to proudly show us membership cards and tell us about the clubs and beaches they visit.

With each passing year, it also becomes more and more difficult for lawmakers to view nude recreation as something on the fringe, novel, or otherwise “out there.” The best evidence is the willingness of lawmakers and staff to approach our table no matter what party affiliation they hold or state from which they come. We gain inside information on what prompted adverse and positive legislation, and how to deal with it. We gain valuable contacts too.

*Canadian Leadership and Beyond.* It is a lesser-known fact that more Canadian lawmakers attend than those from any given state or two. This means that we have an opportunity to explain nude recreation to many neighbors to the north. Leaders from as far as Europe and Africa also attend.

*Media Attention*. AANR comes to NCSL prepared with press releases. Susan and I made ourselves available to talk with reporters and journalists. This year Susan was filmed on camera by ABC News, New York, although a segment has not yet aired. The following stories have already mentioned us, however:

The Economist Magazine (online):

*Convention Awards Ceremony*

*Submitted by Randy Savage*

During Convention show no fear,

When our AANR Oscar doth appear,

Academy Awards is the theme we chose,

And among the winners there are no foes.

Friday 13th the date so near,

So be you ready to stand and cheer,

Paparazzi we’re told are close,

Make Tilley’s the only cloth you expose.

Fix your face, and don’t you leer,

Just have yourself another nude beach beer.

Your best skin is the fashion to wear,

Imagine the shame that you’d have to bear,

If a picture of you arose,

All draped with darned old clothes.

AANR-NW Beach Weekend Update

By admin at 7:04 am on July 21, 2010 | No comments

After receiving some calls and emails about the beach weekend event I decided to post more detailed information. Most have been asking if they can help which is really appreciated. What we really need is a pop up canopy and a portable table suitable for using at the Sauvie Island event.

July 31, 9 am -Rooster Rock State Park-This is a clothing optional event. Highly suggested that you wear shoes and sunscreen. Bring gloves if you have them. We will be working with the Rooster Rock park staff. Park Ranger Supervisor Glenn will have a list of projects that includes light to heavy work. Volunteers do not have to pay the day use fee. When registering you will receive a pass to put in your window. Please do not bring or leave any items visible in your car. The only restrooms are located near the parking area. The hotdog barbecue is just that…hotdogs, buns, condiments, and sauerkraut. Always plenty for each volunteer to eat several! It will be hot so bring lots of water.

Mountaindale Sun Resort (MSR)-Volunteers provide a nice dinner and serve at 6 pm. There is no breakfast served so some beach volunteers stop in North Plains to eat breakfast before heading to Sauvie Island. Some bring an ice chest for their breakfast items, water and snacks. Please contact MSR if you plan to participate. 503-647-2449 or email office@mountaindalesun.com. Check out their website at www.mountaindalesun.com.

August 1-Sauvie Island-Collins Beach 10 am-A parking pass is required and can be purchased at the store or deli after crossing the bridge to the island. Restrooms are close and located in the parking area. We will concentrate our efforts on the gravel road parking area and litter sweeps of the beach area. Hot dog barbecue starts at noon. We are in need of a pop-up canopy and a portable table suitable for putting the barbeque grills on for this event.

You can participate in one event or all three. Public officials appreciate our efforts and your participation contributes to preserving our nudist rights on public lands.

If you have questions or can provide a canopy or table for the Sauvie Island event please contact Shirley Gauthier at sherbog@msn.com.

AANR Weekly Report 7/16/2010

By admin at 11:53 pm on July 16, 2010 | No comments

**

*Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director*

c/o execasst@aanr.com

*Skinny-Dip Coverage Continues!*

This week media stories continued to pour onto the airwaves and the Internet. According to Google sources, approximately 350 related articles, interviews, clips, and blog entries have been recorded! Carolyn Hawkins has done a great job of compiling the latest news that we have, but we hope you will contact us if you’ve seen something that we haven’t listed. I congratulate each and every one of you who made this year’s event so successful. I personally wish to thank Randy Savage, Susan Weaver, Pat Brown—and Nan and Carolyn from my staff—for their very valuable help.

There are several reasons why this attention is so important:

*Mindset…* About a year ago you may have seen commercials run by a major life insurance/investment company encouraging people to “move retirement planning to the front of your mind.” The company no doubt spent millions to run these ads, but AANR and its clubs can accomplish similar goals with a successful PR event. A big story like the AANR World Record Skinny-Dip is likely to get attention more than once by readers, listeners, and viewers. In turn, that gets people thinking about visiting a nude beach, nudist club, or just skinny-dipping in the family pool. They may have always wanted to give it a try, but just not been thinking about it lately. Getting nude recreation into the mindset of people is very important in getting them to take that first step

*Marketing…* During the last 30 days our website software shows that over 110,000 people visited www.aanr.com. Of those, 38,500 people visited the skinny-dip page. The same software estimates that 80% of this web traffic came from new/first time visitors based upon IP address information, server logs, etc. Many of our clubs advertised on the skinny-dip page which provided an excellent opportunity for others to learn about these clubs. Of course, a logical question is, “How do we turn visitors into members and repeat customers?” For AANR’s part, we signed many, many of these visitors up to receive the Association’s bi-weekly e-mail newsletter, the E-Bulletin. This will allow us to “drip market” to these prospects 26 times within the upcoming year at very little cost. Onsite visitors to clubs were encouraged to sign up to receive complimentary issues of The Bulletin by mail along with an information package about us as part of the Friends of Skinny-Dipping program.

*Mainstreaming…* Even those who will never consider going to visit a nudist club or clothing-optional beach have nevertheless been educated about the huge numbers of people who enjoy doing so. Lawmakers who read these stories become a little less likely to legislate in areas that would offend voters. Advertisers and corporations take notice of the phenomenon, leading to possible positive treatment in their messaging and products. The concept seems much less foreign when a friend or family member brings up the subject.

*More Media…* A good story gives life to many more good stories that “spin off” from the original subject. There’s little doubt that in six months or more from now, Carolyn Hawkins will get a call from a reporter seeking to do a story that was prompted by what they heard about the skinny-dip.

AANR-NW Beach Weekend

By admin at 9:40 pm on | No comments

Rooster Rock-Mountaindale Sun Resort-Sauvie Island Weekend

It is almost time for the annual AANR-NW beach weekend. This is a great time to enjoy nude recreation on public lands and meet other nudists.

July 31-Rooster Rock State Park work day starts at 9 am at the East End area near the restrooms. Park Ranger Supervisor Glenn Littrell will have a list of projects that will include work for all levels of ability. The hotdog barbeque starts at noon. Bring water for your personal use in a refillable container, sunscreen and a towel for sitting. This is a clothing optional event.

Mountaindale Sun Resort (MSR) www.mountaindalesun.com has invited beach volunteers to a free dinner starting at 6 pm following the Rooster Rock beach day. Ground fees are free and if you choose to camp overnight a small fee for your campsite is required. Please call MSR if you plan to enjoy the dinner and/or camp overnight. A huge thanks to Mountaindale for their continued and generous support for nude recreation on public lands. Volunteers enjoy the opportunity to combine the luxory of the resort with their volunteer work on public lands. Thank you Mountaindale Sun Resort.

August 1-Sauvie Island cleanup starts at 10 am. Sauvie Island requires a parking pass that can be obtained at the store or deli once you cross the bridge to the island. There is no water available for drinking so please bring plenty of water. We will be completing a litter pickup along the gravel road and beach area. Volunteers will be gathering close to the water between entrances 3-4. Look for the AANR flag.

SAVE THIS DATE-

September 25-Rooster Rock State Park is hosting a SOLV Fall Beach Cleanup. This event takes the place of the previous May “Down by the Riverside” event. Volunteers are asked to meet at 9 am at the East end area by the restrooms.
