AANR Weekly Report 6/25/2010

By admin at 12:03 pm on June 25, 2010 | No comments

**

*Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director*

c/o execasst@aanr.com**

* *

*It’s A Boy!*

Congratulations to Nanette Wickersham and her husband on the birth of their bouncing baby boy. Mom and son are doing great. Linda Berry and Carolyn Hawkins will be filling in for Nan while she is on maternity leave.

*Region Conventions Well Underway*

As this report reaches you, at least three region conventions are in progress. First, the AANR-Southwest Convention at Armadillo Resort mentioned last week has convened. The AANR-East Convention at Sunny Rest Resort in Palmerton, Pennsylvania, is also wrapping up business meetings and proceeding into a slate of social activities. And the AANR-Florida region began festivities last night at Gulf Coast Resort in Hudson, Florida.

We wish each of these regions the very best for a fun convention and good sunning weather!

*AANR Helping Members and Clubs*

AANR provided a club within the Midwest with a memorandum of legal guidance prepared by Counsel Jawn Bauer concerning plans to hold its World Record Skinny-Dip event on public lands. We are also working with the club and the staff who manage those lands to facilitate the Skinny-Dip or an event at a later time this summer.

We held telephone conferences this week with members in both the Midwest and the East region concerning child custody difficulties they have encountered from ex-spouses following their families’ visits to AANR clubs. (Both of those cases involved mothers who had taken their children to clubs, demonstrating that these issues affect members of both genders.) In the case of the member from the East region, we have also had consultations with the attorney representing mom.

Meanwhile, in the Southwest we provided a package of legal material and an offer to speak with the counsel representing a member after his ex-spouse (who used to attend AANR clubs) alleged that his nudity in the presence of his three-year-old daughter now constitutes abuse.

Finally, we are providing guidance to the volunteer leadership of a club following the “dismantling” of the landed facility which members of the club had attended.

*The Bulletin*

The August issue is in production.

AANR Weekly Report 6/18/2010

By admin at 3:01 pm on June 18, 2010 | No comments

*Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director*

c/o execasst@aanr.com**

*Best Wishes to the AANR Southwest-Region*

This weekend members of the AANR-Southwest will convene at Armadillo Resort in Poolville, Texas, for the region’s annual convention. We wish them the very best for a successful, fun, and safe convention for all. I would like to take just a moment to extend special thanks to Lucy Heide, the outgoing region president, and her husband, Slim, for their dedicated work to the region these past several years. They have done an incredible job!

*AANR Helping Members*

Last week and this week our office responded to calls from several members seeking our assistance. First, a member on the West Coast called requesting literature that she can use to help educate the teacher at her seven-year-old daughter’s elementary school. When asked to make a poster about what she planned to this summer, the girl innocently made one announcing that she and her family would be “naked camping…” with accompanying graphics! Thankfully this one did not spiral into a child protective services matter as has occurred on some occasions, but the girl was kept after school in punishment for what was assumed to be a prank.

We also responded to requests for information pertaining to a West Coast child custody matter—the scenario of divorced parents disagreeing about the kids visiting nudist clubs. In this situation, our office worked with both the member and the AANR club involved to explore their options.

*Did You Happen to Notice…*

That actress Jennifer Anniston and Paul Rudd, her some-time costar from the series Friends, have signed up to perform in a movie that will include scenes set in a “nudist” environment? Tabloids and celebrity columns were abuzz this week about the film Wanderlust. It’s an edgy romantic comedy set in the 1970s in which Anniston and Rudd play a married couple planning a move from New York to a relative’s home in the South. Along the way they stop at a bed and breakfast that turns out to be more of a commune—with a full complement of folks from nudists, to vegans, to weed-smoking…you get the idea. The film is in its early stages of development. Because the reports indicate it will make a comedic play to stereotypes about nude recreation that AANR works hard to dispel, our PR team is working on some creative, fun, ways to respond. Messaging will encourage the public—including Anniston and Rudd—to look closer and think a little differently, too.

*Agenda for AANR Convention*

The agenda for the AANR Convention has been distributed to the board, and it is also available in the Ruling Document download zones of both Member Benefits and Club Services section of www.aanr.com. If you have trouble downloading it, let me know and I’ll be happy to e-mail it to you.

*Message from Dave Landman, DeAnza Springs Resort*

We’re smiling all over because—thanks to all of our tenacious members, visitors, and friends—*DeAnza Springs was nominated* in TWO, not one, categories of the San Diego Tribune’s “Best of San Diego” Poll. Thanks to your effort we were nominated in the *”Best Campground” *and* **”Best Place to Hike” *areas. I’m not sure ANYONE has had that honor before.

Now we need our help by voting for us again. Log onto www.sdbestpoll.com and click on Sports and Recreation and then go to both Campground and Place to Hike to vote. You can vote from different computers and can vote every 24 hours. Voting will continue until June 23. Thanks for your support.

AANR Weekly Report 6/11/2010

*Washington** Trip Very Successful*

I have just returned from Washington, D.C. where I joined seven others from the AANR team in making visits to congressional offices on Capitol Hill, as well as holding meetings with officials from federal agencies. Time does not allow me to provide an in-depth discussion of all that occurred, but I’ll provide a brief summary for now:

- There were eight members of the group including Brenda and Gary from Oklahoma, Bev from Arizona, Steve of Washington state and Texas, Tim and Alonzo of California, plus René and me from Florida;

- In all, our group made between 150 and 160 visits to Congressional offices. Some such visits were brief drop-ins to provide written materials and answer questions. Others lasted for one half hour or more and covered a wide variety of topics. Most were meetings with staff, but a few directly with senators and representatives;

- AANR-Florida region made a considerable impression for the work it has done recruiting and arranging OSHA-approved training of volunteers willing to help clean beaches affected by the oil spill;

- *Every* congressional office for the states of Arizona and Florida received visits. Most offices for Oklahoma and California did also;

- *Every* congressional office of a member who sits on either Financial Services or the Trade and Commerce committees (130 in all) received a visit except just six which could not be reached during the three days on the Hill;

- AANR’s chief legislative issue this year was credit card vendors and banks which are dropping nudist clubs and websites (or forcing them to pay much greater transaction commissions) after wrongly lumping them in with “adult business;”

- We used a bill introduced by Rep. Stupak of Michigan (HR 4059) as a convenient vehicle for discussing the issue as the bill imposes fines on financial service companies that underwrite transactions involving pornography, alcohol, etc. if they do not sufficiently prevent minors from making such transactions. We made the point that banks are already dropping nudists and other legitimate businesses in an abundance of caution. HR 4059 has been assigned to the Financial Services committee as well as Trade and Commerce—hence the visits made to members on those committees.

- Major news media reported on AANR’s work including The Hill (a daily that serves the Capitol), NBC, USA Today, and the Huffington Post. See Carolyn’s report for related links.

- Rep. Stupak later made clear in a response to The Hill that he did not intend for his bill to affect nudists.

*It’s Official*

AANR has received the official certificate from Guinness recognizing the 2009 skinny-dipping event (see attached). Now we just have to beat our own record on July 10, 2010.

*Washington**, D.C.** GAT Blitz is On!*

Beginning tomorrow, nearly a dozen AANR members from coast to coast will arrive in the nation’s capitol for a meeting of AANR’s Government Affairs Team (GAT), followed by three days of intensive visits on Capitol Hill. While there, these volunteers will meet with members of Congress and their staff, as well as leaders from federal administrative agencies with the power to impact nude recreation. Materials have been prepared for nearly 150 meetings in those three days!

A complete wrap-up of the Washington blitz will appear in a future report. Meanwhile, you can read a copy of AANR’s press release about the trip on the Alltogether Blog at http://blog.aanr.com/.

*AANR Helping Members*

This week our office took calls from members requesting assistance with two legal matters. Both involved beaches. The first member was cited for simple nudity on a west coast beach with a long tradition of skinny-dipping which has been used without incident by many clothes-free. Some special circumstances of the case suggest that it is a rare citation rather than a change in policy. A second member was cited on an east coast beach by a ranger with only two weeks on the job. We are providing legal materials and other assistance to their respective counsel.
