AANR Weekly Report – 1/22/2010

By admin at 11:45 am on January 23, 2010 | No comments

*Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director*

*Board Meeting Next Week*

We look forward to welcoming many of you to Orlando/Kissimmee and Cypress Cove next week for the mid-winter meeting of the AANR Board of Trustees. If you have not yet made arrangements for ground transportation, please contact Carolyn Hawkins at pubaffairs@aanr.com or Nanette Wickersham at execasst@aanr.com should you want to coordinate with others.

*Sign of the Times?*

Thanks to those of you who contacted us this week about the election of Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts on Tuesday. As you may have heard, some have called him the “nudist senator” because he posed nude for a centerfold in Cosmopolitan magazine years ago while a student at Boston College law school. (A hand discreetly draped across Brown’s midsection lends a certain tasteful, classic element to the pose.)

We’ll steer clear of discussing politics too closely on this one. And it may take some time to tell whether this experience in the senator’s early life translates into any pro-nudity policies while in office. However, it probably *does* say something about public opinion when appearing nude did not cost a candidate in a closely fought election.

If you wish to see the photo, circa early 1980s, you’ll find it here: http://www.thedailyinquirer.net/scott-brown-cosmopolitan-magazine-centerfold-photo/018633

*Our Thanks to Quartzite Volunteers!*

Did you know that your AANR dues and donations help fund efforts to promote nude recreation and clubs at trade shows and public events throughout the year?

The Quartzite RV experience is among the top opportunities each January. That’s when thousands upon thousands of people drive motor homes to camp for weeks on federal land near Quartzite, Arizona. Thanks to the efforts of many, many volunteers from AANR-West and elsewhere, visitors receive a friendly smile, literature, and answers to their questions about where to go nude throughout the U.S. and Canada.

We would like to thank the many from our Association who braved inclement weather this week to carry on the tradition of this important work. Thanks again!

*Public Relations News*

Media opportunities continue to roll in as response to AANR press releases two weeks ago concerning air travel. Last Friday evening I was interviewed on the Alan Colmes radio program. (Fox viewers will remember Alan’s long-standing role in the Hannity and Colmes Team.) The five-minute interview was light hearted AND provided an opportunity to get the www.aanr.com Web site address out three times to listeners!

*No Report Next Week*

There will be no e-mail report next week. The AANR Board of Trustees meeting will be in session at Cypress Cove Nudist Resort & Spa, January 28-30.

*** The E-Bulletin*

The latest edition of the E-Bulletin went out yesterday. This issue featured a look at interactive nude art shows and much more. Not receiving the E-Bulletin? Go to www.aanr.com and sign up to receive the next edition or to review past issues.

*Terry Justice, Club/Member Liaison*

There is only one directory change this week.

Bluenose Naturists’ e-mail address has changed from bluenosenaturists.comto:

bluenosenaturistsclub@gmail.com . Have a wonderful weekend everybody.

AANR Weekly Report 1/15/2010

By admin at 12:56 pm on January 16, 2010 | No comments

*Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director***

*Our Thoughts and Prayers for the People of Haiti*

We, as the rest of the world, were so, so, sorry to hear about the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti this week. Stories of heroic work by the brave people responding to this crisis, tempered with news of the painful losses endured by so many victims, have this country on our minds. This event provides a strong reminder to cherish the time we can spend with those with whom we love.

*Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Observed*

This weekend marks the occasion for honoring slain civil rights leader Dr. King. He was famous for voicing his dream that people would not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. AANR clubs help take this one step further by recognizing that when we are all stripped down to our bare skins rather than clothed with many of the trappings of society, who we are on the inside becomes that much more important. Members, and indeed our leadership, come from all walks of life in so many shapes, sizes, from many diverse backgrounds. That’s something worth celebrating too!

Our office will be closed on Monday next week and will reopen on Tuesday during regular hours.

*AANR Releases on Air Travel Generate Much Media, Prompt Debate*

AANR distributed two press releases commenting on the state of aviation this week and much of the online world took note.

First, we encouraged passengers to think about the installation of new machines in airports–which produce an electronic scan of travelers in their birthday suits–as a “virtual skinny dip.” The release generated considerable response from newspapers, radio, Internet bloggers, and television stations who covered, re-posted, and commented on our position.

Similarly, AANR members soon responded with thoughts of their own. With a membership as large and diverse as ours it’s unsurprising that there have been many opinions expressed on the Alltogether blog at http://www.aanr.com. A number of these did not appreciate what they viewed as trivializing further erosions of personal liberties and privacy rights. Their points are well-taken.

As Executive Director of an organization with the mission to advocate for nudity (in addition to nude recreation) within appropriate settings, and to inform society of the potential benefits of such, I would not ask them to agree with the release, but to understand the spirit in which it was prepared.

During a week when there has been so much tension and bad news surrounding travel–from a devastating earthquake to security fears–many have found the AANR release a refreshing pause. There are also many polls which show that a great majority of the traveling public believe that scanning is an infringement whose benefits outweigh its concerns.

For AANR it IS important that we challenge the public to think differently about nudity and the human body. We know, for example, that simple embarrassment causes women to forgo mammograms or men to skip procedures that would detect testicular cancer early.

Several years ago when concerns about chemical and biological weapons caused disaster officials to re-evaluate procedures for dealing with casualties after an attack, planners made an interesting discovery: One of the most effective ways to treat large groups of people exposed to an agent released into, say, a building was to evacuate them immediately, have them disrobe from all clothing which may trap such agents against the body, and cleanse themselves in mass portable showers brought to the scene. When faced with such a scenario, the research uncovered that many people would “rather die” than have others see them naked. Is this healthy?

For those who will counter by asking whether changes to security procedures that make them more invasive are healthy, we can say touche’ and leave it to travelers to make up their own minds.

(A second AANR release about taking a Nakation to beat increased baggage fees is also gaining traction as noted in Carolyn’s report below.)

*Note from Lucy Heide, AANR-Southwest President*

The AANR-Southwest Board Meeting at Bluebonnet has postponed until February 26-27.

*Note from Mike Parker, AANR Nominations Chair*

The deadline for AANR Officer and Trustee nominations is March 15. There is an online location to download the nomination forms and view the ruling documents/qualification tables. At www.aanr.com, you log in to the members area and go to the download zone then to ruling documents. The forms are all there (officer, member and club trustee, guidelines for candidate profiles). Endorsements can be sent by mail to 1703 N. Main St., Suite E, Kissimmee, FL 34744, by fax to 407/933-7577 or e-mail to execasst@aanr.com. No late submissions will be accepted.

To complete the nominations process, a number of endorsements are required. If you think that you qualify to run for a position but need more information, contact Nanette Wickersham at the AANR office at 800/879-6833 or e-mail her at execasst@aanr.com.

*2010 Elections Forum Online at AANR.com*

As the 2010 AANR elections are just around the corner, a new forum has been created for viewing and comments on AANR’s blog, The Alltogether. The purpose of the 2010 Elections Forum section is to facilitate discussions about candidates who will be running for AANR Officer and Trustee positions in 2010. In the left-hand margin of the page, click on the 2010 Elections Forum category http://blog.aanr.com/category/2010-elections-forum/

Feel free to post comments about the proposed bylaw amendments, candidates and issues, or pose questions to candidates. This is YOUR association and we’re pleased to offer this opportunity. When the time comes, we hope you’ll cast your vote.

AANR Weekly Report – 1/8/2010

By admin at 12:52 pm on | No comments

*Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director***

*Board Meeting Just Weeks Away*

We’re looking forward to seeing AANR’s officers, board members, committee chairs, and many friends later this month at Cypress Cove for the midwinter board of trustees meeting. Carolyn Hawkins is coordinating a schedule of travelers to assist you with sharing rides from the airport if you wish. Please see Carolyn’s report below for details.

*AANR Helping Members and Clubs*

Over the past couple of weeks, AANR has assisted in a number of areas. We helped facilitate communications on behalf of a member preparing a memorial service for her late husband. The service is to be held in an AANR park, and members of “the outside world” who are scheduled to participate in the program were reassured with information about what to expect.

Our office has also been working very closely with the public defender assigned to represent a husband and wife who are AANR members and face prosecution over taking nude pictures of their family.

*Press Releases–Nude Body Scanning*

News media have been all abuzz about whether travelers will be flying naked one day as security measures intensify in the wake of the failed Christmas Day boxer shorts bomber. We have appreciated the editorials and cartoons that many of you have forwarded to us depicting nude passengers.

Yesterday AANR weighed in on the issue with assistance from our public relations team at Ypartnership. In this case, we have prepared two press releases. The first is a serious look at the issue that encourages travelers to put things in perspective which is complete with survey polling data. (Copy available in the press room of our Web site at http://www.aanr.com/press_room_news_releases.html ). It was distributed to major media outlets. A somewhat lighter piece that compares a body scan to “taking a virtual skinny-dip” was prepared for blogs and online editorials. Read it here: http://blog.aanr.com/2010/01/08/nudists-agree-airport-scanning-that-takes-it-off-is-good-for-america/. We have already seen interest from several outlets, which are catalogued in Carolyn Hawkins’ report below.

*Ashland**, Oregon**, Nudity Ordinance Passes*

We would like to thank the many AANR members, and especially GAT Volunteer Shirley Gauthier, for their efforts working to stop an anti-nudity ordinance in the city. This week the measure passed by a 4-2 vote, albeit amended with provisions for nudity on private property and within First-Amendment-protected-protests. Prior to this week’s hearing, the Association distributed letters via Priority Mail to dozens of members in the city asking them to get involved by writing, e-mailing, or phoning city officials and attending the hearing. We are grateful to those who responded.

*Availability of Nude Recreation Considered in Rating Countries for Best Living*

Those who have been following the development of the Nudists’ Bill of Rights know that it advocates the choice of individuals and families to enjoy nudity within appropriate settings as a fundamental one. There are more and more signs that others agree. This week the Magazine for International Living released its annual Quality of Life Index, which ranks nearly 200 countries on criteria ranging from cost of living, to health care, freedom, and recreation opportunity. Results have been widely reported, INCLUDING THE FACT that the availability of nudism / naturism helped elevate Germany to its ranking of fourth overall!

See, e.g.

http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=496971&in_page_id=2&ct=5&in_page_id=2&expand=true

When being nude friendly is a serious consideration for what makes a country great, can the Nudist Bill be far off-base?

*Carolyn Hawkins, Public Relations Coordinator*

*Positive Publicity*

We sent out a press release regarding body scanning at airports. I received a call from the Toronto Star and am waiting for USA Today to call. Toronto Star came from Erich’s message on AANR’s blog, The Alltogether. The Baltimore Sun picked it up, saying “Nudists say airport scans OK – so do radiologists.” Read it here: http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/business/consuminginterests/blog/2010/01/nudists_say_airport_scans_ok_s.html
