Important News on San Onofre Beach
This week AANR public lands liaison Steve Hubbard brought us late-breaking information about California Department of Parks and Recreation’s immediate plans at the beach.
The following notice appeared yesterday on AANR’s Alltogether blog at: http://blog.aanr.com/2009/09/
10/san-onofre-update/
.
We ask members in California to consider the message carefully.
In ongoing discussions with the California Department of Parks and Recreation, California Parks has advised AANR of its intention to begin citing individuals for being nude at San Onofre based on CCR section 4322 regulating nudity within California State Parks. These citations may be either an infraction or a misdemeanor. It must be noted that the California Appellate Court has ordered the prior order issued by Orange County Superior Court Judge Sheila Fell to enforce Cahill reversed and that a new order be issued.
It is important that individuals be aware that a misdemeanor citation can often have long-term consequences and to make their decisions regarding recreating at San Onofre accordingly.
California Parks is stressing that this change in managing nudity in its parks is being limited to San Onofre. Individuals who are aware of any actions that differ from this should report this information to the AANR office at 800/Try-Nude immediately so we can address this with California Parks.
AANR continues to have ongoing discussions with high-level representatives of California Parks to look for long-term answers to protect our rights to reasonable access to public lands for nude recreation in the California Parks system.

This is the day all the beaches get cleaned of trash by volunteers. Nudists all up and down the coasts have adopted beaches to do their share. We are doing Bates Beach. Bring gloves and maybe a poking stick if you have one. We have the trash bags. Relax on the beach with us after the task is completed. California State Parks Foundation (CSPF) – Update
For more information: www.calparks.org
Good news! On September 10th, the California State Senate voted to approve SB 679. It’s now on the way to the Governor’s desk.
Senate Bill 679 preserves the integrity of California's state park system. This bill requires that no land acquired for the state park system may be used for non-state park uses without the substitution of other lands of equal value. SB 679 enacts common sense provisions that are clear and assert the need to protect the state's investment in the state park system. SB 679 is consistent with policy that exists in Public Resources Code (PRC) 5401. PRC 5401 prohibits governmental bodies from acquiring properties that are currently in use as park properties and using them for non-park properties. However, no statutory protections exist for situations when lands that are already being used for park purposes are being proposed to be used for other park purposes. SB 679 addresses that gap in the law.
It is expected that due to budget cuts more than 100 state parks will be closed to public access. There is still no closure list at this time.
The California State Parks Foundation (CSPF) was founded in 1969 by William Penn Mott, Jr., former director of both California's Department of Parks and Recreation and the National Park Service. With our 100,000 members, CSPF is the only statewide independent nonprofit membership organization dedicated to protecting, enhancing and advocating for California's magnificent state parks.
