Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director
Erich is at NCSL This Week
This week the AANR contingent is in Philadelphia for the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). Philly.com ran an extensive article on the conference Thursday morning, with comments from Erich and accompanied by a photo of Susan Weaver in front of the AANR booth. Here is the link:
New York Times
Last week, The New York Times ran an article discussing differing parental views on nudity within the home entitled, “When is it time for them to put on a fig leaf?” Erich prepared an e-mail to the writer of the story on behalf of AANR, complimenting her on the objective treatment of this subject. His response appeared in yesterday’s print and online edition in the Home and Garden section, identifying him as AANR’s Executive Director. Read his response and the letters at:

Nudity in California State Parks—Update
From the AANR blog (http://blog.aanr.com/2009/07/22/protecting-public-lands/)
As you may have heard, newspapers in California, including the San Francisco Bay Guardian, reported on Tuesday about the status of nudity within the California Parks system beyond San Onofre.
According to these sources, other venues where nudity has been traditionally enjoyed may be under threat now that California’s Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals has issued its ruling regarding the Cahill Policy. This situation is, of course, what the American Association for Nude Recreation feared could happen when the Naturist Action Committee filed suit against the California Parks system.
With reports that other park managers may begin what amounts to a “crack down” on nudity within their jurisdictions given the state of flux created by the Fourth Circuit’s decision, AANR Public Lands Liaison has spent considerable time in communication with the higher echelons of California Parks to obtain additional assurances that no changes in status are planned in parks other than San Onofre.
We have been encouraged by these communications and will dedicate all our expertise and resources to maintain an atmosphere with the Department conducive to protecting nudity on park lands. However, it is equally important to speak to the politically charged atmosphere of the ongoing litigation between NAC and the California Parks. While we will earnestly work for cool heads to prevail, we should be frank with you. The heat is on, and the temperature climbs with every lawyer and judge involved.
At a time like this it is critical to stick to facts, avoid personal attacks, and communicate with your AANR Government Affairs Team about events that concern you. By reducing speculation, increasing the supply of credible information, and seeking common ground, we believe we will be in the best position to ensure the future of the recreation we treasure on public lands.
California—Bonny Doon Beach Update
Submitted by Rich Pasco
Several Bay Area Naturists have expressed concern regarding the article “Trouble at Bonny Doon Beach” (The Frisky Banner, Vol. 21, No. 7: July 15, 2009, page 3)
On Wednesday afternoon, July 22, 2009, I telephoned the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Department and spoke with Deputy Ryan York. I stated that some deputies had been telling people at Bonny Doon Beach to dress, and I asked what that was about. I noted that the only relevant Santa Cruz County ordinance I could find was 8.16.020-030 which prohibits simple nudity only in the “urban area” defined as from the northwest Santa Cruz city limit southeast to the Pajaro River. Bonny Doon is clearly way outside that “urban area.”
Mr. York offered to do some additional research and call me back, which he did about an hour later, having returned to his office and done a little more research which confirmed my reading of the law. He said, and I quote, “Nude sunbathing and swimming at Bonny Doon Beach is perfectly legal, as long as there is no lewd behavior. Feel free to enjoy.”
He didn’t know which deputies had visited Bonny Doon on June 28, but he said that, based on the law, they should only cite anyone engaging in lewd [i.e. sexual] behavior. Simple nudity continues to be no problem, he reassured me.
I thanked him profusely, indicating that the 40-year tradition of nude sunning and swimming at Bonny Doon is alive and well (and that I personally have enjoyed it for the past 36 years).
Mr. York did not mention Bonny Doon’s possible future transition to State Park status, and I didn’t ask. For now, it is still managed by Santa Cruz County, which has no problem with nudity there.

AANR GAT Auction Items Benefit AANR Members!
Thanks so much for your generous support of the American Association for Nude Recreation. Many members have contributed donated items annually to our Silent and Live Auction. It is due to your previous gifts that AANR is able to continue this vital program to “advocate nudity and nude recreation in appropriate settings, and educate and inform society of the value and enjoyment of such…” Your generosity is greatly appreciated.
This year the AANR GAT Auction will be held at the AANR 78th Convention at beautiful Oaklake Trails Naturist Park in the Southwest region. All auction proceeds will continue to provide our members and all like-minded people the benefit of AANR’s advocating for nude recreation and responding to issues that can affect our recreational choice. The AANR Government Affairs program adds membership value through activities such as:
· Documentation and assistance to club owners and members
· Government Affairs Training Workshops
· Advocacy efforts to legislative officials and the general public
· Preservation of public lands for nude recreation
Would you be willing to participate at the same level of sponsorship (or greater) as you have in the past? Are you interested in contributing for the first time? Not only are resort trips and sunbathing towels favorite items, but personal picnic baskets, regional wines and homemade articles have been proven to bring in great bids. If it’s easier, you can send a cash donation to AANR and in the memo note “AANR GAT Auction.”
Please send your gifts by August 8, 2009. All the proceeds of your gifts go to support the AANR Government Affairs Program, a program critical to the advocacy and preservation of nude recreation. We look forward to your donation to support the Government Affairs program this year.
Send your auction items with the attached auction form to:

“Auction Angels” Needed for GAT Auction
The AANR Convention Auction Team is looking for a few good “angels” to assist in the auction which is scheduled for Friday, August 14th. No experience is necessary. Assist with prep work, setup, assisting guests during the auction and checkout. It’s fun and rewarding. Contact Debra Sue for more info: debra_sue@mindspring.com.
