Getting the Job Done in Government Affairs—Credibly

Montpelier, Vermont — Need an example of how the American Association for Nude Recreation and its regions watches the future of nude recreation in private resorts AND on public lands?  Consider the following story about the Association’s success in alerting, tracking, and responding to a dangerous proposal in Vermont.

Nudity Ban. A state lawmaker introduced a bill (HB 154) this term to ban nudity in any public setting within the green mountain state.  This would represent a major shift away from a very live-and-let-live approach to nudity in settings like the many beautiful streams and ponds decorating the state. In fact, now-U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy once wrote that his state had no interest in regulating skinny-dipping on public land unless a person made a complaint, in which case the “offender” should simply be asked to get dressed.

StateNet Security. Just four days after HB 154 was introduced Government Affairs Coordinator Debra Stevens was alerted to it and began tracking its progress using the StateNet legislative monitoring service.  StateNet flags bills using a vast array of key words pre-selected by the Association and also provides the full text of bills and the location in the legislative process.  The service costs thousands of dollars per year, but enabled sharp eyed members of the government affairs team to respond quickly.

Credible Voices. Given the gravity of what HB 154 would do, a prompt decision was made that we should obtain top quality government representation at the state capital.  Six days later we had a signed agreement securing the services of none other than a former attorney general and his son, who himself served as the president of a prominent legal association within Vermont for four years.  Working on behalf AANR and the AANR East region, this professional spoke with the chairperson of the committee assigned to review HB 154.  He received her promise that the bill would not advance, but because things can always change in a political
setting, continues to monitor the bill.

We are not requesting any action by members at this time.
