NY Times Article WILL Run This Sunday - As a Cover Story to the Travel
Section
For weeks we have been anticipating the arrival of a NY Times article which has been months in the making. We’re very pleased to have seen advanced copies of the story and can now say that it will appear as full-color story beginning on the front page of the Travel section, and continuing to a two page, full-color spread within. Please be sure to stop by any newsstand selling The Times on Sunday and purchase a copy.
AANR 2008 Election Ballots on the Way
Your ballot for the 2008 election is in the May issue of The Bulletin and on its way to you. Please see Linda Berry’s report for some details on the “mechanics” of bringing your ballot to your door, as well as important information for voting AANR members who do not receive mail from AANR.
Did Steve Say That????
We have received a number of calls and e-mails from clubs and members who have expressed concerns about quotes that were reported in a Tucson, Arizona, area newspaper from AANR Public Relations Assistant Steve Vickers. Given the article, we can understand your frustrations with Steve’s “remarks.”
We can only counter that the quotes do not reflect what Steve told the newspaper.
The comments concern a call Steve received from a reporter who, for reasons that only the reporter could conceive, believed there was a “story” in the fact that she had witnessed a 10-year-old, pre-pubescent girl splashing topless in a waterway area with her parents and other children playing nearby.
The reporter “interviewed” several different experts for their opinions, including an employee of the city’s park and recreation department-who allegedly said that even a nude infant on a blanket was inappropriate in his opinion-to a boys’ and girls’ club employee who allegedly said they would immediately cover a girl “in that condition” up with a shirt, but opined that maybe the girl was too poor to own a swimsuit top.
And the reporter interviewed Steve. As he clearly remembers, the call was brief and he answered that this didn’t seem like a big deal at all. He noted that it is a shame that we as a society could ever be at the point that anyone could have a problem with this girl’s play attire given that the Saturday Evening Post celebrated skinny-dipping for years. He provided AANR’s mission, which includes advocating for nudity and nude recreation in appropriate settings, which include clubs and beaches and other designated areas.
>From this the reporter quoted Steve as saying several things that he, frankly, just never said. Broken up and re-assembled, they joined other comments that the reporter assembled into a piece with no viewpoint other than a scathing commentary on the girl’s parents.
Reporters who flat-out misquote those they interview are a hazard in media relations. There are many other hazards, some of which can be dealt with a bit more easily. A new DVD from the Association is being made available for clubs preparing for encounters with the press.
AANR Helping Members and Clubs
AANR Club and Member Liaison Terry Justice and I conducted phone calls with a member seeking guidance about making his backyard sufficiently private from neighbors to avoid neighbor complaints and legal problems. We also received an e-mail from another set of parents having custody challenged on the basis of visits to nudist parks. Arrangements have been made for a call with counsel.

E-Bulletin
The next edition of the E-Bulletin will be sent out on Monday.
Mail Ballots
Martha Young and I went to Mail Unlimited on Tuesday to coordinate the mailing for the May issue of The Bulletin that includes the voter’s guidelines, ballots, and AANR-NW regional newsletter.
There was a total of 16 sorts that had to be done to get The Bulletin ready to mail. There were two sorts for members of each region, single and dual; National members and clubs; and National AANR-NW members. Single members will receive one voter’s guideline, one ballot, one envelope, one Bulletin, and one newsletter (if in the NW region). Dual members will get one voter’s guideline, two ballots, two envelopes, one Bulletin, and a newsletter if applicable. National members and clubs get no voter’s guideline, no ballot, and one Bulletin. National members who are in the NW region will also receive a region newsletter.
There are also members who are eligible to vote, but have elected “no mail” status, meaning that they do not receive anything from our office. The good news is that those members are still eligible to vote by contacting VR Election Services at 800/218-4026, Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m. CT, or e-mail customerserv@vres.us. Members will need to provide their P number, located on their AANR membership card. AANR also distributed flyers to clubs to post on bulletin boards regarding this policy.
The deadline for voting is June 20, 2008. We ask you to encourage your members to participate in this important process.

Preparing for Washington, D.C. Visit
Your AANR Government Affair Team is hard at work planning for our annual trip to Washington, D.C. The team has been finalizing key talking points and is beginning to schedule appointments with legislators and/or their key staff members. We make this visit in conjunction with the activities of the American Recreation Coalition funoutdoors.com in celebration of Great Outdoors Week. We are also leveraging on the fact of being in one place to conduct a Leadership Forum for one and half days; which will help us define our direction in the future. Be assured your AANR membership dollars are being spent wisely to forge the future of Government Affairs and forward our relationships with governmental decision makers. Thank you for your continued support!
