=20 AANR Weekly Report for February 9, 2007
=20
Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director
E-Bulletin Distributed to AANR Clubs and Leaders this Week
Yesterday the first edition of AANR=92s all-new E-Bulletin made its debut appearance with a dispatch sent to all clubs, officers, and trustees. Of all copies distributed, only 14 =93bounced back=94 due to full inboxes, etc= . The E-Bulletin is designed to mesh with the look of www.aanr.com <http://www.aanr.com/> and to echo our brand.
If you received your edition, we=92d like to hear from you with your though= ts about this full-color electronic newsletter that will soon be sent to all AANR members who have an e-mail on file. If you didn=92t receive your issu= e but got the report you=92re reading now, please e-mail back to E-Bulletin editor Lynn Von Hagel at e.bulletin@yahoo.com so we can troubleshoot the problem.
We can already tell you that 40 percent of those who received the E-Bulleti= n opened it. Our link to the story about Buff Bowling in Maine received the most click-throughs although the folks organizing Here Comes the Fun (AANR= =92s 2007 Convention at The Willamettans) will be pleased to know there were als= o click-throughs to their registration page.
We look forward to bringing all members with an e-mail address this =93publication=94 within the next two weeks, and to bringing them a fresh edition every two weeks from then on. Expect a short, newsy piece with links and timely info about what=92s going on in the world of AANR and nude recreation.
AANR Planning Response to University of New Hampshire Study
There were considerable stories in the press this week about a UNH study reporting that 40 percent of youth ages 13-17 had been exposed to pornography on the Internet. Normally that wouldn=92t be an issue with us except that the stories noted that, for the purposes of the study, pornography was defined as a picture of either sex between persons or an image of a naked person.=94
Recognizing that newspapers don=92t always get things just right, Pat Orner= , our Government Affairs Coordinator, called the UNH research professor who coordinated the study. Turns out the study was done in 2005 but that it wa= s true=85 they defined pornography to include any naked person explaining, = =93we couldn=92t find an easy way to distinguish between nudity and porn.=94=20=20
Our inquiries, =93what about art works, painting, biology texts, [or simple nudist material]?=94 were met with a long pause and a =93we never thought a= bout that.=94
We are in the process of preparing a written response to the University which diplomatically outlines the problems we see in automatically equating all nudity with pornography, and offering to serve as a credible resource i= n framing future studies. We=92ll let you know how things go.
—————————————————————————= – —————-=20
Carolyn Hawkins, Public Relations Coordinator=20
Carolyn is on the Bare Necessities Cruise.=20
—————————————————————————= – —————-=20=20
Linda Berry, Director of Publications
THE BULLETIN
The March issue goes to the printer on Tuesday.=20
—————————————————————————= – —————-=20
Patricia Orner, Government Affairs Coordinator:
All clubs are needed to get the word out about the latest tool in our GAT/CAT arsenal =96 The AANR Legislative Action Center. Members wishing to receive alerts on legislative issues, those who want to check who their seated politicians are and/or all CATs, NEED to visit the Web site as soon as possible and make sure the correct e-mail address is set up. This latest benefit of AANR membership is available now directly from www.aanr.com <http://www.aanr.com/> on the MEMBERS AREA and GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS pages.
SESSION SUMMARY
There are 42 states, D.C. and U.S. in Regular Session. OH is in Skeleton Session. DE is in Budget Hearings. IL is in Perfunctory Session.
This week, State Net Smart Search added 259 bills to the list to be evaluated because they contain language that 05 affect AANR members. All summaries are read and those requiring additional attention are referred to your Regional GAT chairs for evaluation. At the same time, AANR staff reads the text and then communicates with the Regional Chairs to determine if a bill will be watched, targeted for immediate attention or suppressed if in fact it is not relevant to our member=92s issues. Your GAT team receives weekly a report from State Net on all bills they are watching. Some bills require daily or even hourly tracking. These dedicated volunteers give freely of their time to help ensure we get the word early on an issue that needs to be watched. The reality is that the machinery of legislatures ofte= n moves quickly and your team needs all the eyes and ears they can get to mak= e this a successful program. That is where CAT comes into play. AANR needs every club to select a Community Action Team (CAT) volunteer leader and get that name and contact number to your regional GAT chair. REMEMBER =96 State Net only tells us the bills and regulations active at the state level. No similar tool exists that will alert your GAT team to local ordinances.=20
REGIONAL REPORTS=20
AANR SW =96 No staff support requested in this region this week.
FANR =96Staff is still watching HB 269 and working closely with AANR/FANR G= AT Chair Debra Kay Hedding.
