AANR Weekly Report for December 22, 2006

By admin at 12:49 pm on December 22, 2006 | No comments

=20
AANR Weekly Report for December 22, 2006
________________________________=20
Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director
Wishing You a Very Special Holiday Please accept our very best wishes for a special holiday weekend and for a prosperous New Year in 2007. In observance of Christmas, the AANR office will close today at 12:00 noon. We will also be closed on Monday, December 25, but will reopen on Tuesday. =20
Cindy Horton Recovering Well=20 Cindy Horton, our Financial Supervisor, appreciates your many prayers and good wishes for her recovery from surgery last week. On Wednesday Cindy came home from the hospital and is =93getting her spirits back.=94 =20
In the News
Nude recreation made news in a couple of places this week. First, the Florida Times Union picked up on the Forbes story about AANR=92s outreach efforts to the college market with this piece: http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/121606/bus_6810806.shtml
Later this week, Under theone of AANR=92s participating businesses, received some great press from a major newspaper in their area. See: http://www.sptimes.com/2006/12/21/State/Her_shirts_100_off.shtml
They invite you to visit their Web site at: http://www.underthesunnude.com/ and are open to explore cross linking with your club.=20
A story about Under the Sun=92s upcoming anniversary will appear in the Mar= ch 2007 issue of The Bulletin. Congratulations to Renee and Tom on their success. ________________________________=20
Patricia Orner, Government Affairs Coordinator
I will be on vacation until January 2, 2007 and will not have access to my phone or e-mail messages. Should you need assistance before I return, pleas= e contact your Regional Chair or Alonzo Stevens.
REGIONAL REPORTS=20
AANR DC =96 Thanks to John Hunter for his diligent feedback on the Youth an= d the Outdoors Summit recently held in Washington, DC =96 =93Perhaps the most profound concept presented was: We need a societal structure where kids ar= e brought into the outdoors by a loved and trusted adult. That, of course, i= s one hook which AANR can use to tie into the overall program.=94=20
AANR SW – All is quiet this week in this region.=20
FANR =96 Staff and FANR GAT Chair, Debra Kay Hedding, are working with a Daytona Beach reporter on an article about the progress made at Apollo Beach. While on another assignment the reporter has taken the time to meet with Richard and Shirley Mason and visit Haulover. She told me that she can see the success of Haulover reflected at Apollo but for a severe lack of parking. As with many projects, this crosses between the GAT and PR departments. Carolyn and I feel that this will be a positive venture.
WCANR – All is quiet this week in this region.
AANR EAST =96 State Net reports:=20 LEGISLATIVE DOWNSIZING FINALLY COMING TO PA? Just about every year, one Pennsylvania lawmaker or another introduces a bill aimed at reducing the size of the state Legislature =96 legislation that inevitably goes nowhere. But next year 05 be a little different. Some believe last session's pay-raise scandal and an incoming group of reform-minded lawmakers make 200= 7 ripe for downsizing. "It's more doable now than ever," says Sen. John Pippy (R), who sponsored legislation last session to cut both houses by more than a third. "Before, it was difficult to even get people to talk about it. Now the question should be, 'Why not?' " =20 With 253 members, a staff of 3,000 and an annual operating budget of $348 million, the Pennsylvania legislature is one of the nation's largest and most expensive to operate. New Hampshire=92s legislature, at 424 seats, is bigger, but it's a citizen legislature in the classic sense, with members paid only $100 a year. =20 Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D) supports the idea of downsizing. And the state's top legislative leaders are at least willing to consider it. Sen. Joseph Scarnati (R), who will be president pro tempore of the chamber next year, said, "I think we need to have the public debate," although he added, "If it's just about saving money, there are a lot of other ways to save money." =20 And the man who's promoted the cause longer than anyone thinks it's still a long shot. " Pennsylvania is still the baby-step state, even though circumstances have changed," said former House and Senate member Allen Kukovich, who introduced downsizing measures from 1978 to 2004. =20 The process definitely involves more than baby steps. Reducing the size of the legislature requires a change to the state constitution, which means that a measure would have to be passed in two separate legislative sessions and then be approved by the state's voters. (Philadelphia Inquirer) =20
AANR WEST =96 All is quiet this week in this region.=20
AANR NW =96 Thanks to Steve Hubbard for his work with AANR staff in getti= ng a nomination to hold a session at the 2007 NRPA in Indianapolis, Indiana next Sept. The AANR proposal will seek to educate in a panel setting on the positive economic impact of clothing-optional recreation. We will know in March if our proposal is selected.=20
AANR MIDWEST =96 All is quiet this week in this region. SB 245 passed both houses and heads now to the Governors desk. His approval is expected as the main thrust of the bill is focused on sexual predators. AANR will stand ready should members in the future report prosecution resulting from this flawed law.
–=20 No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. S. B. 245
AANR and AANR Midwest urged our Ohio members to help in the following ways:
(1) Read the NAC alert and the bill
(2) Write and/or call your county sheriff and local political heads and ask them what the financial effect will be on your taxes if the state passe= s this bill as written. The state impact has been documented at a minimal $100,000 annual increase and the unknown effects on your local budgets have not been calculated.
(3) Write and/or call your state representatives and urge them to read th= e proposed language substitution at the hearing on Tuesday. AANR implemented through www.capwiz.com/aanr an alert allowing e-mails to all committee members with a few keystrokes. AANR Midwest President, Harvey Hanna, was th= e first AANR member to utilize this new dynamic grassroots tool. Harvey reported that it was fast and user friendly.
(4) Stand ready to show up at the public hearing on Tuesday, December 12 at 2:00 p.m. Harvey Hanna and a dedicated team of Ohio volunteers spent a very long day in committee chambers as the bill was not heard until close t= o 7:00 p.m. Testimony and details from Harvey will be in the February issue o= f The Bulletin.=20
(5) Call Mark Hammond, AANR Midwest GAT chair, at 517/741-7004 or Patrici= a Orner at 407/933-2064 with any questions on this alert.
The bill passed the committee without amendment and went on the Ohio House Calendar for third consideration on December 14, 2006.=20
AANR staff monitored the session, which is available for viewing at: http://www.ohiochannel.org/index.cfm?action=3Dmedia.legislative_session_det= ail s&program_id=3D26&session_id=3D91808 by clicking in Session #2 on the bill= . The bill passed 88 yea – 1 nay. Curiously, only 28 representatives elected to add their names to the title.=20
The efforts of this joint protest will not go unrewarded. The sheer fact that over 20 constituents sat face to face with the committee members and that reasonable and credible testimony was read into the record will fare well should this law have cause to be challenged. AANR Weekly Report for December 8, 2006

By admin at 4:27 pm on December 8, 2006 | No comments
AANR Weekly Report for December 8, 2006

Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director
VERY SPECIAL VOLUNTEER
Kudos and Thanks to a VERY special volunteer this week! – AANR and its regions are very grateful for the hard work of so many members, club owners and staff, and officers who volunteer so much of their time to make us the credible voice of reason for nude recreation. Occasionally one such leader / volunteer goes way beyond the level of our already dedicated people and deserves special mention.
This week we would be remiss if we did not express our deepest appreciation to Secretary/Treasurer Sharon McLeod who recently agreed to lend an extra hand in getting AANR's Marketing Consultant program on track to help clubs. The program had already helped several, but faced a backlog because our team in Kissimmee couldn't devote all of the time necessary to make the program what it could be. Within weeks of taking on this assignment, Sharon has personally called dozens of clubs and Marketing Consultants alike. She has helped to prepare special articles about progress in the program for The Bulletin and has also created at-a-glance progress charts, timetables, and conducted a conference call for all "Marketeers" to compare notes.
Sharon, you've given us all a lot of items on our to do lists over these past few weeks, but we know you've had three times that many on your own list as you keep us on track. We're very, very grateful for all that you have done and we hope fellow officers and clubs will join us in thanking you!!!
SPECIAL NEWS – AANR GETS HALF PAGE ARTICLE IN FORBES MAGAZINE!!! Be sure to read Carolyn Hawkin's report below for details on this exciting development as an article about AANR's outreach to Generation X appear in the print magazine version of this highly respected and trusted financial publication. Many volunteers spent hours being interviewed for what was trimmed to an article covering the basic facts, but this was well worth it as Carolyn will explain.
CALLING ALL CLUBS AND MEMBERS IN OHIO I know that there's a lot to read in the report this week, but please be sure to read Government Affairs Coordinator Pat Orner's report about important developments in Ohio and how you can help if you live or have a club in that state. We deeply appreciate any help you can offer on this late-breaking move on a piece of potentially harmful legislation.
TANR Meeting at Laguna del Sol a Success Last week the Trade Association for Nude Recreation wrapped up its annual conference at Laguna. Outgoing President and Laguna owner Suzanne Schell teamed up with her husband Wayne and the club's staff to offer the group great accommodations, delicious meals in their recently completed all-new restaurant and an array of speakers on topics from emergency preparedness to getting into the mindset of your customer. While attending AANR President John Kinman gave some remarks that resonated especially strongly with the clubs and businesses there.
Congratulations to Fernando Granger of Sun Island Resort of El Cajon, California, on being elected as the Association's incoming President. We look forward to working with you.
Giving Credit to TNS and NAC on a great idea This week The Cyber-Bulletin on AANR's web site includes a photograph and story about an idea that–we've got to hand it to The Naturist Society and its Naturist Action Committee–was a great one. Just in time for the political season they made low cost election style signs on a stick encouraging a vote for nude beaches! They will continue to offer them, so you can get one for your front lawn. To see the article click: http://www.aanr.com/cyber_bulletin.html .
News to Use — Home Nudity Theme Prominent in Popular Cartoon "Zits" for a Whole Week From December 1 – December 7 the cartoon comic strip "Zits" ran a continuing theme built around the main character (15 year old Jeremy Duncan)'s decision to romp around his house naked while his parents are gone. Jeremy's initial joy and fun at giving nude recreation a try ( "this is so out there.so rock and roll!!!" ) wanes a bit as his aunt, the UPS man, his girlfriend, then his best friend, show up unannounced in rapid succession. The antics end with best friend Pierce's consoling words that going around the house naked is a right of passage and nothing to be embarrassed about.even if Jeremy's the only one who ever got caught doing it. (Note: December 3 was an unrelated cartoon.)
Fortunately the Seattle Post Intelligencer keeps an archive of about a month's worth of Zits strips, so you can see the whole set online right now. To view the first day, click here: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/fun/zits.asp?date=20061201 . View subsequent days by selecting dates from the drop down menu.
Have FUN!
——————————————————
Linda Berry, Director of Publications
The Bulletin The January issue is in progress and will go to the printer Wednesday of next week.
MERCHANDISE BROCHURE The new merchandise brochure is available and has all the latest in nudist fashion. There's plenty of time to order your Christmas gifts from AANR for your family and friends. Towels, T-Shirts, and pendants are popular items. Call Carol DeAldana at 800/879-6833, ext. 233 with your order.
——————————————————
Carolyn Hawkins, Public Relations Coordinator
PUBLICITY
The article hit in print in the December 25 issue of Forbes Magazine titled "Naked Pitch" by Suzanne Hoppough. This is a positive article picked up from PR Week. It focuses on Steve Vickers as a member of Generation X. We do not simply send out the most enthusiastic consultant or the consultant located closest to you-we send what's best for your club.
Do you need Marketing and Public Relations expertise? Perhaps you require someone with club management experience. Maybe you want to build membership in a particular area. Possibly you're involved with real estate details. With sixteen trained consultants, AANR can provide expertise in these areas and much more.
If you have questions about the changes to this program, please contact Sharon McLeod at acornpubs@yahoo.com. AANR Vice President George Morrison has suggested that we tell our members each month what we do to advocate, educate, and inform the public about nude recreation. Clubs and regions are invited to submit a short paragraph to The Bulletin each month about the trade shows, conferences, PR or government affairs opportunities that they have participated in. There were 1,388 tickets sold in support of AANR's continued legislative and legal defense fund. Be sure to look for the details in the January edition of The Bulletin.
The Mira Vista Challenge has already brought in over 100 tickets sold. Each five-dollar donation gets your club member one chance to win a seven-night stay for two including grounds fees and one dinner for two at Mira Vista in Tucson, Arizona. Several clubs have begun using the Challenges as local fundraisers. Buy $100-$500 and if your club wins you can hold an on site drawing with AANR publicity. It is a fun way to do your part and help AANR protect your member's rights.
If your club will help with promoting the challenge fund raisers with a counter card for your check-in area PLEASE e-mail me at government@aanr.com today. AANR is also setting the schedule now for 2007 fundraisers, and at the recent Fall Board of Trustees meeting Alonzo Stevens introduced "WALLY THE FIREMAN" and challenged every club to hold in 2007 a $500 fundraiser to help put out the fires of prejudice. Look for WALLY to make his first appearance in the February edition of The Bulletin.
REGIONAL REPORTS
AANR EAST – This week AANR staff continued following up the beach efforts in the Assateague and Cape Cod area. Bill Falconer has volunteered to be part of the team at NCSL 2007 which will be held in Boston. Bill recently assisted the AANR staff in responding to a member's inquiry about a possible $50 fine on Martha's Vineyard at Aquinnah. Bill reports that "there is no proof of this from the rangers or local media." Bill and the AANR staff are continuing to research this issue.
AANR WEST – Bev Price and AANR staffer Steve Vickers are currently manning the AANR booth in Phoenix, Arizona, at The Council of State Governments annual State Trends and Leadership Forum. Look for their feedback in the February edition of The Bulletin.
AANR MIDWEST – All is quiet this week in this region.
AANR NW – All is quiet this week in this region.
AANR DC – All is quiet this week in this region.
AANR SW – All is quiet this week in this region.
FANR – Watch the January edition of The Bulletin for an article I will have relating one of the successful political positioning plans I was able to implement during the recent election cycle in Florida. This week Debra Kay Hedding, Carolyn Hawkins, and I had a positive conference call with Richard Mason of SFFB and Haulover Beach fame. All agreed that things are moving well on the TACOBA project to leverage the success of Haulover to the Pinellas area and that maintaining good working relationships at all governmental levels is an essential part of any beach success. Plans are in the works for Debra and the AANR delegation to meet with 10-20 Florida legislators and hopefully the new Governor next March during Visit Florida Day in Tallahassee.
WCANR – All is quiet this week in this region.
DIANE ARBUS STORY
The movie "Fur" released this week, documenting the life of Diane Arbus. A recent Orlando Sentinel article stating, "The film, framed in a post-Lionel visit to a nudist camp," caught my attention, and I am researching to see if it was actually shot at an AANR club or other nudist camp. If you have seen the movie or hear about this please e-mail or call me.
