This week our hometown has welcomed AANR East Trustee Bill Williamson and his wife/AANR East Secretary Mary, plus George Morrison of AANR Midwest, AANR President Pat Brown, AANR East President (and Public Relations Chair) Susan Weaver, and the FANR Officers and Board. We wish them a great celebration.
Gen X Outreach. The AANR Marketing Ambassador program for the college/Generation X age set dovetails with the meeting. Tomorrow, and weather permitting, five ambassadors who have been taking training all week, will travel to an island off Tampa used by nude boaters. They will distribute cold water, sunscreen packets, and basic information about the Association as they "reach the beach."
Cape Cod Cleanup Brings Out 51 Volunteers Despite Wind and Rain. Speaking of beaches, the 10th Annual Cape Cod Cleanup with volunteers from the Sunchasers, Sandy Terraces, Pilgrim Naturists, Solair, AANR East, NAC (which also contributed several hundred dollars to the effort), and from many other locations throughout New England, went on despite colder temperatures and rain at Race Point Beach in Provincetown, MA. AANR East Government Affairs Chair Jim Corsentino, Take Pride in America Coordinator Kathy Pearson, and I distributed drinks and sandwiches to 51 volunteers who turned out despite the weather.
I would like to thank these many people, clubs, and organizations for their support. As a Take Pride in America event, their volunteer hours were tracked and submitted to Washington, DC, to help showcase the way nudists give back to their communities.
We took a group picture of these volunteers dressed in bright yellow AANR "Caution Clothes 05 Come Off Without Warning" T-shirts specially imprinted on the back with cleanup details. We later made 5×7 prints of that picture and distributed these on special "Greetings from the Annual Cape Cod Cleanup" messages on letterhead stationery. We later distributed one with basic information about the Association, a copy of the anti-nudity regulation governing the Cape since the early 1970s that we're trying to change, and a Caution T-shirt to each and every office of Massachusetts members of the U.S. Congress and Senate. We personally asked staffers in those offices who handle Dept. of the Interior issues to review the regulation and help us in making a change that's more than 30 years overdue.
Great Outdoors Week a Huge Success The congressional visits described above were part of an overall strategy to meet as many lawmakers, staff, and decision makers as possible in the "alphabet soup" of agencies in Washington that affect recreation during the American Recreation Coalition's Great Outdoors Week.
A full recap with photos will appear in a future issue of The Bulletin. However, those attending with me included:
AANR Government Affairs Chair Alonzo Stevens and his wife Debra, FANR Government Affairs Chair Hugh Williams and his wife Linda, AANR East Government Affairs Chair Jim Corsentino and Kathy Pearson (who, as we've noted, also helps with Take Pride in America), AANR Midwest's Luana Rohrer, AANR Northwest's Steve Hubbard, AANR West's Beverly Price, AANR DC Government Affairs Representative John Hunter, and AANR/AANR E's Maryland Lobbyist Don Murphy.
In all, early calculations show between 60 and 75 personal visits were made with Congressmen, Senators, and/or staff. Other highlights include Steve Hubbard meeting the new Secretary of the Interior (Steve gave him an AANR 75th anniversary lapel pin and explained our sponsorship of Great Outdoors Week), plus several members of our delegation touching base with Fran Manilla head of the National Park Service. (Members of the team also had an opportunity to discuss with officials the emerging developments to curb nudity on the American River in California .)
Nanette Wickersham, Club/Member Liaison There are no address or phone number changes for the Directory this week.
If you wish to receive C.O. changes from this week, or would like an updated Directory (electronic or hard copy), please contact me at clubinfo@aanr.com or 800/879-6833.
Linda Berry, Director of Publications
The Bulletin Hopefully everyone has received the June magazine by now. The response has been tremendous!
The July issue of The Bulletin just arrived in our office late this afternoon. It will go in the mail to you on Monday. Work on the August issue is well underway.
Carolyn Hawkins, Public Relations Coordinator Carolyn is out of the office today doing media training at Cypress Cove. She'll give you a full report next week.
Patricia Orner – Government Affairs Coordinator State Legislation and News From State Net Congress has not raised the federal minimum wage since the days of the Clinton administration. But following a suggestion from the former President himself, a number of states have recently taken the matter into their own hands. This could have a direct financial effect on your club operations. To read the entire story – go to the Government Affairs area of the AANR web site Monday.
The LOUISIANA Senate approved HB 1381, which will ban the sale of violent video games to anyone under 18. It fires off to Gov. Kathleen Blanco (D) (TIMES-PICAYUNE [NEW ORLEANS]). 05/11/2006
HOUSE BILL NO. 1381 was a Substitute for House Bill No. 421 by Representative Burrell. No language in the passed bill addresses nudity, however AANR tracks all bills that are "relative to offenses affecting the health and morals of minors".
ARIZONA Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) vetoes HB 2675, which would have forced local governments looking to invoke eminent domain to declare blight on a property-by-property basis rather than condemning an entire area based on a few properties. Napolitano said the measure "goes too far" (ARIZONA REPUBLIC [PHOENIX]). Beverly Price, of AANR-West, and a registered Arizona lobbyist, has been carefully watching this and all Arizona bills.
The DELAWARE HOUSE approved legislation that outlaws playing a pornographic movie in a vehicle if people in other vehicles can see it. It goes next to the Senate (DELAWARE STATE NEWS [DOVER]).
This legislative body also adopted DE HR 58 " TO REQUEST THE DELAWARE FEDERAL LEGISLATORS TO SUPPORT THE "CYBER SAFETY FOR KIDS ACT OF 2006" which AANR staff is closely watching to be sure that it would not apply to AANR web sites.
GREAT OUTDOORS WEEK The Government Affairs Team arrived this past Sunday in Washington, D.C. AANR staff assisted in last minute preparations and sending additional tools to the team as required. The team was able to hold meetings with many congressional offices. Look for reports in a future edition of The Bulletin.
AANR's donation to the ARC Silent Auction got a lot of attention. We will know soon if AANR raised the most for our partners American Recreation Coalition (ARC).
At the end of the event members of the team from California became aware of a potential issue with preparations of a General Management plan for the Auburn State Recreational Area. AANR was able to provide AANR West Region Chair, Debra Sue Stevens, with details to allow her to take charge of the situation while she was in D.C. and had resources like John Hunter nearby.
AANR CONVENTION SILENT AUCTION Has your club sent back yet the bright pink form in the last club mailing?
