AANR Weekly Report for April 7, 2006
Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director
AANR Ballots are Off to the Printer!
This week the AANR staff and some dedicated volunteers finished final proofreads on the seven regional "smart ballots" prepared by VR Election Systems that will be mailed and made available to members online beginning with the mailing of the/05/2006 issue of The Bulletin. VR is an independent firm handling AANR's historic first one-member-one-vote election.
This week we also certified the list of those members eligible to vote in the upcoming election.
Members on "No Mail" Status Eligible to Vote!
In preparing AANR's eligible voter list, we learned that there are approximately 2,700 who have opted for "no mail" status with us. For reasons of privacy, they receive NO communications directly from our office. However, as full members, they are eligible to vote. We're counting on AANR clubs to help spread the word that these members 05 obtain access to VR Elections' online voting–or have a ballot sent to them–by contacting the company and providing verification information. We will make this contact information on VR Elections available as the election approaches.
New Content on AANR.com Website – and How to Access It!
With candidate information on all those seeking positions in the upcoming election available online in our "Ballot Box" area, a number of you have contacted us to request that we clarify the procedures for accessing the Ballot Box and the rest of the members' only area of our website.
First, you should visit aanr.com and select the tab that says member benefits. Someone once told us that the CVB's visitor center is the best place to help steer visiting relatives, friends and acquaintances to sites of interest! (I think the actual comment was: "Could you tell my visiting mother-in-law where to go?") We have many suggested itineraries for day trips and overnight excursions. We know out-of-the-way places to visit and we get some unusual requests, as well (someone asked us last week where the local nudist camp was they had heard Lou Scally talking about it on WJEJ). The Downtown Hagerstown Visitor Welcome Center is open six days per week all year long, and seven days per week from mid-April through October. If you haven't been there lately, stop in and see what we have to offer!
This is example of our relationship with "Visit Florida"The citation is NY Times Style magazine "Travel Spring 2006" (Mar 19, 2006), "Florida — For the Traveler Who Wants Everything." Each page has the logo "VisitFlorida TM The State's Official Source for Travel Planning." The section is a 4 paragraph one headed "Beaches, beaches everywhere." Last paragraph is on Canaveral National Seashore. Last sentence reads as follows: "Your company for miles 05 be a pair of fishermen, a few shellers and, off in the frothy distance, a handful of nude bathers."
Visit Florida is a very good partner and has invited us for up to a week during each month to set up a table at the Welcome Centers and promote nude recreation. We have done this at the I-75 and I-95 Centers and it has proved to be a very good experience.
Clubs Request Consultants
The pre-visit questionnaires continue to come in. If your club has not filled out the questionnaire, or you need a copy please let me know and I will get it to you.
Room Reservations for AANR Convention
Reminder — book your room reservations for AANR's 75th anniversary celebration. This will be one you will not want to miss. You can check with DeAnza regarding reservations, but as of right now they are full. You could go on the waiting list if you like. DeAnza's phone numbers are 619-766-4301, or 877-246-6833. I am including the hotel contact information for the area.
Lux Inn – approximately 7 miles from DeAnza
(619) 766-9005 39739 Avenida De Robles Verdes Boulevard, CA 91905
Room rate is $260.00 for the week, or $59.40 per night
Jacumba Hot Springs Spa – Approximately 3 miles from DeAnza
Phone – 619-766-4333
Room rate is $70.20 which includes use of the facility.
I suggest that you make your reservations as early as possible.
Patricia Orner, Government Affairs Coordinator
Revenue Sources
As of the end of February the Government/Legal income (4675) is down $3,172.05. Holding down expenses $1,759.15 below budget during the same period puts us at a net loss of $1,412.90. A new process for increasing GA Challenge revenues is being implemented this month. Alonzo Stevens has also accepted the responsibility under the umbrella of the GAT committee for the annual convention silent auction fundraisers – starting with this year's event. The nude artwork, so popular at last year's auction, has been producing donations from walk in traffic at the AANR office, and we are exploring ways to expand this revenue source. Donation jars at all beach cleanup events will bring in additional dollars.
Take Pride In America
With April 22 sneaking up fast, this week AANR ordered volunteer shirts for the Friends of Assateague Beach Spring cleanup and finalized the design of the AANR Beach Etiquette Flying Disk. We will have a donation jar at these events to help offset the cost and AANR-East is participating as a sponsor.
Networking
I was recently asked to explain how AANR members benefited by our participation in Partners Outdoors 2006. As I was preparing this week for our GAT trip to Washington, DC in June I was reminded of what was imparted to me by Turner Stokes at Partners Outdoors 2005. Turner told me that money spent making networking connections is harder to find because it is not as easy to picture long-term results. Just like the attorney in Hillsborough County Florida who remembered Erich from meeting years before – personal connections made in the safe environment show decision makers and influencers that AANR members are just ordinary people that prefer to live and recreate without the shackles of textiles. Watch the Government Affairs page on the web site for more on networking as a GAT/CAT tool.
ELECTION CONNECTION
Is there an opportunity for you to make an ELECTION CONNECTION this year? Only if you live in one of the states listed on the 2006 Election Year Calendar available now on the Government Affairs page on the web site. Will meeting a trustee from AANR impress a candidate? Should every club hold candidate forums and invite politicians to come and speak to AANR voters? Should AANR start a Political Action Committee (PAC) fund to let politicians know that we will support those who support our issues just as other associations do?
