(See attached GVRD=20 resolutions). The Governors gave unanimous Board 2 approval to=20 controversial Phase 2 of the Marine Student Residences which=20 included two towers of 18 and 17 storeys, respectively (See text of=20 UBC resolution attached).=20=20
=20 "The simple fact is that only the GVRD can determine if the towers=20 are in compliance with the Official Community Plan. UBC had no=20 business pronouncing its development to be consistent with the OCP=20 by usurping GVRD jurisdiction over planning in Electoral District A=20 in which Wreck Beach lies," said Judy Williams, Chair, Wreck Beach=20 Preservation Society (WBPS)."Please keep in mind that it is solely=20 and wholly within the authority and jurisdiction of the GVRD to=20 determine compliance with the OCP (a GVRD bylaw)," Williams said.
=20
"Now that the UBC Board has approved this phase, we are concerned=20 that UBC will expeditiously proceed to issue itself a building=20 permit, with all its attendant obligations. This could happen before=20 the GVRD Board has had an opportunity to review the current design=20 at its February meeting, in light of its impact on Pacific Spirit=20 Regional Park, and the fierce public opposition to it. We are=20 gratified that the GVRD Board of Directors on January 27 directed=20 its Staff to bring back a full report to the February Board=20 meeting," Williams added.
=20
UBC fails to acknowledge the voices of over 6000 students who signed=20 petitions protesting the towers rising above the treeline. They also=20 are ignoring 1,155 protest letters received from concerned people=20 worldwide regarding this matter. If the UBC towers are not=20 lowered, and GVRD parkland stewards do not call UBC's bluff, UBC's=20 environmental obscenities will continue.
{AANR-NW editor's note: The following are NOT attached.}
For your information, please find attached copies of several GVRD=20 resolutions concerning this matter. Those resolutions set out=20 restrictions on the design of the proposed development, and=20 prescribe methods for resolving any outstanding issues and concerns.=20
Also, please find attached a letter from Tourism Vancouver.=20=20 Finally, the full text of the UBC resolution passed by the Board of=20 Governors January 26th is also attached. AANR Weekly Report for January 27, 2006

By admin at 9:21 am on January 28, 2006 | No comments
January 27, 2006

Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director

Quartzite Show a Success!
Carolyn Hawkins remains out of the office wrapping up a tour of the West coast that included visits to some AANR clubs, as well as attending the RV and Travel Show / Flea Market / Extravaganza at Quartzite Arizona.
Carolyn joined numerous AANR / AANR West officers and volunteers in staffing a booth there and all reports are that it was a major marketing success for clubs across the continent because the RV travelers who congregate at Quartzite invariably come from "some place else."
Carolyn will provide a more complete report on her return to the office.
SELF magazine – You've got to get it!
The February 2006 issue of Self magazine is now on newsstands and the shelves of bookstores and grocery stores everywhere. If you're in the nude recreation business, you'll probably want to pick up a copy for the very encouraging message about being comfortable with simple nudity that it brings to today's woman.
Look for a cover that references "Head-to-Toe Healthy" and "Body Confidence!" Then, flip to page 140-141 where you'll find a nude woman embracing the outdoors with the very positive message, "Love Your Naked Self." On those two pages, women of varying ages share what they have done nude, or would like to do nude.and it's very tasteful and affirming.
For example, Amy, a 35 year old military officer from Tucson, Arizona writes, "My secret pleasure is sitting on my balcony in the nude at night or early in the morning, just as the sun is coming up. There is something peaceful and very forgiving about nudity in the dark."
The SELF story does not happen to mention AANR or any nudist club per se. However, two years ago some clever pitching from your collective team lead this same publication to send a reporter to interview Carolyn Hawkins of our office and spend a weekend at Cypress Cove. The current article is evidence that the magazine continues to echo positive messages about why more women embrace nude recreation.
There's one thing you can be certain about: whether it's through the Association's From a Woman's Perspective handed out at a Quartzite RV Show, Self magazine, or even Elle Girl, Cosmo Girl, and Jane magazines last fall, more women than ever are receiving those messages. The support of members and clubs has made it possible.
AANR Helping Members
This week AANR arranged a lawyer referral and provided information and support to an AANR member mom in Florida. She dropped off film to a chain pharmacy that included about four "bare buns cherub" type shots of her eight year old son with Christmas Angel wings (along with many clothed pictures in holiday dress) that she planned on using for a traditional craft project wherein she makes framed gifts / ornaments for close family. Regrettably, the store turned her into authorities who subjected her to rigorous questioning. We'll keep you apprised of how developments unfold in her situation.
AANR not only assists members encountering legal difficulties, but we also prepare helpful fact sheets providing guidance on a range of issues, including nude photography. They're available in the members' and clubs only sections of our AANR.com website.
AANR Marketing Consultants are On the Way!
Last week I shared some "silhouettes" with you about the AANR members who will be traveling to Orlando next week for intensive Marketing Consultant training that they will pass on to clubs. I'd like to share a bit more information about others in our incoming class:
- At least three Consultants currently operate successful non-landed AANR clubs; they have considerable experience building a club even if the club doesn't have a building;
- One member has designed and built an attractive web site to explain many positive aspects of nude recreation. He's in his mid-30's and wants to help the Association reach others (especially in that age bracket) with his entrepreneurial and technology skills.
The faculty who will be training our Consultants includes a former executive with Marriott of several decades (don't confuse him with another executive from this chain whose taking the training that we mentioned last week!). It also includes Brad Nix, AANR's branding expert who has also helped FedEx, Pepperidge Farm, and RJR Nabisco reach their full brand potential. Don't forget Susan Weaver, with decades of experience managing public relations for some of Washington's top agencies. Add YPB&R's team of experts and remember that they're the same firm that ARVC trusts to build the overall campground business market in North America and you have a team that the Association and the regions (AANR East, AANR Northwest, and AANR West) can be proud to support.
Linda Berry, Director of Publications
The Bulletin
The February issue is on its way to you, and March is in production.
Revised Brochures
The merchandise brochure is being revised to coordinate with the other brochures and the Web site. The Enjoy Life Naturally brochures have been revised and will go to the printer in the next few weeks.
Carolyn Hawkins, Public Relations Coordinator
Carolyn is out of town this week. She worked the AANR booth at the Quartzsite RV show in Arizona the first part of the week, and then visited clubs in California the remainder of the week. She'll fill you in on her travels next week.
Patricia Orner, Government Affairs Coordinator
StateNet
There are 36 states, DC and US in Regular Session. There are four states in Special Session. Last week with over 10,700 bills prefiled and over 26,000 introductions, we began working with Statenet on refining our search criteria. They are projecting almost 93,000 bills in the system in 2006. Add to this the untold numbers of regulations that we are now scanning for problem language and it is easy to see why the GAT Committee has set in play a plan to train all GAT Regional Chairs on use of this valuable tool.
Lobbyist
Last year we began a plan with MSA and NAC positioning a well-respected lobbyist who is continuing to carefully watch three Ohio bills. This three way split for the lobbyist also keeps AANR "in the loop" and has resulted in an increasingly cooperative atmosphere.
Ordinances Struck Down
The Associated Press reported this week that a U.S. district judge struck down Daytona Beach, FL's anti-nudity and topless bar ordinances. As of today, this issue is not on the agenda for their next commission meeting. Should they solicit public comment or offer new regulations we will be ready to make our position known. It will be interesting to see the arrest count during Bike Week.
Government Affairs Fund Raiser
Your GAT leadership has already begun to implement plans to increase line item # 4675 (Legal Fund) with a goal of the biggest and most exciting auction ever at the AANR annual meeting in August. The theme of 75th anniversary will carry through the auction with more tantalizing items and advance promotions to encourage bidders. Thinking "outside the box" is encouraged so if you are willing to sit in a dunk tank or challenge another trustee to eat a live goldfish – please give me a call. We have over 100 entries already in the Desert Shadows Challenge. CAT projects to raise these revenues are also being encouraged.

AANR Weekly Report for January 20, 2006

By admin at 4:31 pm on January 20, 2006 | No comments

Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director

January 20, 2006

What a WEEK it's been! There have been exciting developments at AANR in a number of areas, with progress to report in several areas.from our research to help AANR clubs with their insurance needs to favorable media coverage for nude recreation.

Progress Report on AANR Elections
With AANR's all new voting structure in place, this June the Association will conduct its first ever membership-wide election on a one-member-one-vote basis. We are actively working to ensure that this process goes as smoothly as possible, while using a third party service to ensure the confidentiality and integrity of all balloting.

We're pleased to let you know that VR Election systems of Texas will be assisting us with this project. VR Elections brings a wealth of experience in helping members conduct officer and board elections on behalf of associations (including the Louisiana State Bar Association), state pension funds (they handled several state teachers' funds from Ohio to California), credit unions (for their boards of directors) and other groups.

On Thursday Cindy Horton, Martha Young of Publications and I held an intensive telephone conference with three members of the VR team who will be assisting us directly. VR has (and relayed back to us) a comprehensive understanding of the number of positions to be elected next June, the regional differences in balloting for member trustees, and our confidentiality needs. We have already sent logo artwork to the company which is preparing sample ballots that we will have on hand for the March Board meeting. Internet and mail balloting are included in the current project, with a vote by phone option easily arranged for an additional charge. I would appreciate your input on whether you think the convenience of phone balloting would boost participation.

Beginning next week, I will be providing regular updates on the number of positions for whom we have received nominations, and will be reminding clubs (and the membership) to get talented people to seek office. Sharon McLeod has also prepared an excellent piece on how to serve that will appear in the February issue of The Bulletin.

Forbes Article on Best Topless Beaches gets reposted on MSNBC
Last week Carolyn Hawkins relayed news about a recent story that ran on Forbes.com concerning the best topless beaches. That story included facts and figures from AANR about the growth of our industry, as well as strong support from financial analysts—such as an expert with Price Waterhouse—who study the travel industry and note the value of the niche market in nude recreation. And while the title of the article was "topless beaches," much of it discussed full nudity.

This week that story re-ran on the MSNBC site under travel. This "double coverage" increases our chances that people will see a favorable piece.

Finally, I'd like to express my appreciation to Nicky Hoffman of the Naturist Society, who suggested that the Forbes reporter talk with us in building this story.

AANR Continues to Explore Insurance Options
As many of you 05 know, the Jim Calfee Insurance company which arranged insurance for so many AANR clubs was recently acquired as Jim is retiring from his business. In light of this development, as well as the many changes and challenges occurring in the overall insurance industry, a number of our regions and clubs have recently asked AANR to explore risk management options that 05 be available to (1) AANR Landed Clubs; (2) AANR Non-Landed Clubs (which especially need assistance with obtaining a cost-effective general liability policy); and (3) AANR's Regions.

Today our financial supervisor Cindy Horton, our club liaison Nan Wickersham, and I had a very productive meeting with a vice president from Evergreen Insurance group. He is working on an analysis to address all three of the above areas and has promised to get back with us in a few weeks. Meanwhile, we have also asked some local contacts in the insurance field to tell us what they can do. We'll keep you apprised of how things go on both fronts.

Wealth of Talent in AANR's Marketing Consultant Class
Over the past several weeks we've been relaying how excited we were about the number of very talented volunteers who applied for training as AANR Marketing Consultants. Our "class" will assemble beginning the evening of Thursday February 2 and start intensively training the next day. Here's a sampling of the extremely impressive people and experience that will be available to assist your clubs this winter and spring with a toolbox of marketing helps and training:

-A senior marketing executive with the Johnson & Johnson company for over 30 years;
- A current city manager of a mid-size city, who has experience managing nearly a dozen cities and townships over his career, while also serving on numerous community development boards;
- A member with more than 20 years of management and executive experience with Marriott International;
- A technical writer and communications expert with over 17 years of experience helping to make the complicated more simple, while drawing on what she learned pursuing her Master's degree in education;
- The former Director of Public Relations for one of Richmond, Virginia's largest banks for a number of years, who also holds a degree in journalism. (She also happens to be a successful mom raising a nudist family and owns her own business!)
-The owners of two of the most successful (and largest) AANR clubs on the West Coast (both had extensive marketing and/or management responsibilities before becoming owners during their "second careers" in nudism)
- The retired general manager for one of Florida's largest nudist clubs.

This is but a sampling, and we'll bring you another sampling of our incoming class next week.

It's regrettable that we were not able to invite everyone who applied for the program and, in effect, had to turn away some very capable people with varied skills not unlike the people we've described above. In many cases, this was due to geographic considerations, as we seek to have consultants within reasonable traveling distance of most clubs.

Frankly, I can only say that it is incredible to know that these highly skilled participants and applicants came from the ranks of our membership!

AANR Helping Members
This week AANR has been assisting a Florida grandmother and AANR member with arranging to have visitation rights with her young grandsons at her home in a nudist club. The children are currently part of a supervised program. Social workers and officials with the program unfamiliar with nudism made a "knee-jerk" decision that it's "not allowed." We're working with this member to educate them and change their minds.

Linda Berry, Director of Publications

The Bulletin
The Bulletin went to the printer on Wednesday of this week. We should have our advanced copies on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Carolyn Hawkins, Public Relations Coordinator

The forbes.com article was picked up by MSNBC on 1/19/06. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6822385/

Every year we are invited by FLA/USA to participate in the festivals at the welcome centers. This is a complimentary service because we are a partner with them. Bob Erlenmeyer manned our booth in December 2005 and as a result found we could set up a booth with our brochures for a week at a time depending on space availability. Per Bob's request I followed up to find that these folks are excited that we want to spend several days with them. I plan to work out a schedule, so if anyone is interested please let me know so I can get you on a list. Again, based on availability we can set up at any of the following welcome centers. I-95; I-10; 231 and I-75. If any of these are in your area and you have interest let me know. The days are flexible, weekdays or weekends.

We are still working with YPB&R on an article for Time Magazine.. They are focusing on females in 4 areas — seniors, generation X, baby boomers and youth. Nothing final has been done, but we will keep you posted.

Another spin is Cosmopolitan focusing on the male nudist. Steve Vickers interviewed with them. This issue is scheduled for March 2006.

The cruise is just around the corner and time is running out to get your club brochures to me. Thank you to the clubs who have already sent in their brochures for display on the cruise. You still have a little time, but if you are going to send them to me please do so as soon as possible to be sure I receive them in plenty of time. Please send them to AANR, 1703 North Main Street, Kissimmee, FL 34744, Attention – Carolyn

Reminder —- book your room reservations for AANR's 75th anniversary celebration. This will be one you will not want to miss. For information on rooms at DeAnza as well as local hotel information, call DeAnza at 619-766-4301, or 877-246-6833

We have closed the consultant training and we are completing the process for the trainers and now we look forward to the knowledge we can gain from this program.

Patricia Orner, Government Affairs Coordinator

I am working on pulling proposed legislation for careful scrutiny. The following states open their regular sessions: AK, AL, AZ, CA, CO, DC, DE, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MO, MS, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, US, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV.

Does your Regional GAT Chair have the contact details yet for your club Community Awareness Team (CAT)?

Thanks to Steve Hubbard for reporting that WA HB 1333 (2005-06) "Including municipal indecent exposure and lewd conduct convictions in the state indecent exposure felony determination". The bill was, by resolution, reintroduced January 9, 2006 and retained in present status. We began watching this bill last year when it did not make it out of committee, and will continue tracking.

I am also watching WA HB 2624 which could affect our senior skinny-dippers:
Authorizes the commission to deny or revoke any Washington state park pass for cause, including but not limited to the following: (1) Residency outside the state of Washington; (2) Violation of laws or state park rules resulting in eviction from a state park; (3) Intimidating, obstructing, or assaulting a park employee who is engaged in the performance of official duties; (4) Fraudulent use of a pass; (5) Providing false information or documentation in the application for a state parks pass; (6) Refusing to display or show the pass to park employees when requested; or (7) Failing to provide current eligibility information upon request by the agency or when eligibility ceases or changes.
Statenet reports :"On a lighter note, at least one state legislator appears to have found inspiration in the "droopy drawers" bill that made VIRGINIA the butt of jokes in the news across the country and around the world last year. Florida state Rep. Gary Siplin (D) wants individuals who display their underwear "in a vulgar and indecent manner" to be punished by up to 10 days in jail. "We have to change the way men, especially young men, dress," he said. "I had an Afro when I was growing up. We had some things. But showing your underwear? That doesn't look good. That ain't cool." (ASSOCIATED PRESS, BOSTON GLOBE)" Here is a solution – NO PANTS NO PROBLEM
On the Beach Scene – A very positive piece by Forbes can be found on the MSNBC web site at: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10823891/from/ET/

The following is a sampling of their discussion:
Steve's Question: "In general, what are your views of nudists and naturism in Canada?"
Nancy's Answer: "As I gain a greater education of nudism, especially within Canada, I see how important it is to ensure that there is a safe and respectful attitude towards those who are practicing nudists.I believe in what WCANR stands for and how they hope to work with North American associations such as the American Association for Nude Recreation.to protect such places as Wreck beach and local clubs in Canada."
Nancy closed by stating, "I look forward to gaining greater insight on your organization and hearing about ways that I can be of assistance as a sitting Member of Parliament. AANR Weekly Report for 1/6/2006

By admin at 11:53 am on January 6, 2006 | No comments
Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director
January 6, 2006
Let me begin by extending our very best wishes to you for a happy and prosperous New Year in 2006.
Train the Consultants
This week our "window" for submitting an application to AANR's train the consultants program in February draws to a close. We again wish to thank the AANR East, AANR West, and AANR Northwest regions for their generous support for this program. Carolyn Hawkins' exciting progress report below helps demonstrate that it's been worth it.
Time Magazine
Carolyn's report also brings some exciting news about inquiries we received from Time magazine this week. We hope it will lead to a favorable article in the future.
INF
INF's "home" country is changing. International Naturist Federation (INF) Delegate Dean Hadley recently contacted AANR about a change to the country in which INF is officially incorporated. Long a Swiss corporation, INF has migrated to a German company, although the Federation's headquarters will continue to be located in Antwerp, Belgium. The change is largely a housekeeping measure to take advantage of some economic and political opportunities.
Those of you less familiar with INF 05 not know that your AANR membership automatically includes membership in the Federation. In addition to saving AANR members money when they travel abroad, an INF card serves as an introduction to nudism in over 60 member countries. Moreover, our members join over 300,000 others who formally belong to their respective country's association. We're proud that your membership makes you a part of a very special family like this.
Year-End Membership Count
AANR official year-end membership count will soon be under way. As you know, AANR's new voting procedures are, more than ever, significantly tied to the Association's year-end membership count. For example, we will use this count to set thresholds for various voting "tiers" representing clubs of various sizes. Within just a couple of weeks we will begin rapidly processing that count as all clubs have until January 15, 2006 to postmark their membership transmittals.
Linda Berry, Director of Publications
The Bulletin
We've had positive comments about the new look of The Bulletin. February ads and club news pages have been built and proofed. Angie is laying out the editorial now.
June 75th Anniversary Magazine
Thanks to Mike Parker, we have a list of all AANR convention dates and locations for this issue. Judy Grisham has sent in some old photos, and a couple of clubs and regions have indicated that they will be sending a brief history and/or photos. Please show your support for ASA/AANR by sending in some photographs. They will be returned upon request.
Miscellaneous
We've been proofing the pages of the AANR Web site for possible corrections and revisions; the AANR NW Nudescene is in the works; the new Cyber-Bulletin is up; new magnets have gone to the printer; ads are in the works for two different publications.
Carolyn Hawkins, Public Relations Coordinator
Consultant Training
There has been a tremendous response to the ad in The Bulletin regarding the consultant training. As of today we have had 24 actual resumes/applications. The team has already started reviewing the paperwork and a decision will be made early next week.
Positive Publicity
I had an interview this week with Clear Channel Radio regarding the growth in nude recreation as well as the growth in clubs
We also have a lead from Time magazine from a press release sent from YPB&R.
Club Brochures for Cruise
Time is running out to get your club brochures to me for the cruise.
Room Reservations for 75th AANR Convention
Reminder — book your room reservations for AANR's 75th anniversary celebration. This will be one you will not want to miss. For information on rooms at DeAnza as well as local hotel information, call DeAnza at 619-766-4301, or 877-246-6833
Patricia Orner, Government Affairs Coordinator
Partners Outdoors
This has been a busy week, as I get ready to travel Saturday to Phoenix, AZ for Partners Outdoors 2006. This four-day session will focus on "a much more ambitious effort to stimulate creative and partnership-based efforts to enhance recreation on public lands". Bev Price has agreed to also represent AANR.
States in Session
Sessions are opening and prefiled bills are in process of being pulled for Erich to evaluate. PREFILING: AK, AL, AZ, DE, FL, GA, IA, KS, MD, ND, OK, SC, SD, TN, UT, VA, WA & WY.
There are 11 states (CA, DC, KY, MA, ME, MO, MS, NE, NH, NY, RI, VT) and DC in Regular Session and OH is in Skeleton Session. AK, AZ, GA, IA, ID, KS and WA regular sessions will convene on 01/09/2006. PA and PA "a" are in recess until 01/03/2006; CA "a" until 01/04/2006; DE "a" and DE "b" until 01/10/2006 and OK "a" until 02/06/2006. US held an Organizational Session on 01/03/2006.
CAT Teams Link with GAT Regional Chairs
Clubs are being asked to get CAT teams linked in with their GAT Regional Chairs so that grassroots alerts make their way to the team in time for positive action to occur.
GAT Chats
GAT chats are being held as live conference calls now twice monthly by the Regional Chairs and activity in the regions is picking up. Calls will be recorded beginning with the January 10th call to allow more access to the shared information.
Legal Front
On the legal front this week, we are working with an issue of internet access from public library locations involving our web site. We are also monitoring child custody issues in more than one state. It goes without saying that AANR can be of greatest assistance when we are able to offer input early in a legal process. Helping locate council experienced in a specific area and/or providing educational and reference materials can make a real difference and hold down expenses.
