AANR Weekly Report for 12/9/2005=20
Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director
TANR Conference at Caliente a Success
Last week I wrote you from the road explaining that the Trade Association for Nude Recreation=92s annual conference was in progress. I can now report that the event was a strong success, drawing about 30 attendees from various clubs who serve as owners and/or business managers. They shared best practices and information on a variety of subjects that can, in turn, benefit clubs throughout AANR. A more detailed description with photos from the event will appear in an issue of The Bulletin in Spring 2006. For more information on that association, see www.tanr.com <http://www.tanr.com/> .=20
Thanks for Your Responses to AANR=92s Question of the Week!
Last week we launched the first of what we hope will be a series of the AANR Question of the week by asking:
On approaching AANR=92s 75th anniversary, it is fitting to reflect on the past half century. During this time period, which consumer or industry trends have had a profound impact and/or shaped the future of acceptance of nude recreation?
We appreciated hearing from Jim in the Midwest with his suggestion that the beginning of Bare Necessities cruises, and the mainstream nude cruise market, was a major turning point.
I=92ll add to the =93pot=94 with an offering of my own: The 1958 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Sunshine Press v. Summerfield. This was the precedent setting case that ruled, once and for all, that nudist magazines were not obscene. Within weeks of the Sunshine Press ruling the U.S. Postal Service extended second class mailing privileges to nudist periodicals like Sunshine and Health. AANR=92s monthly publication, The Bulletin, benefits from such decisions to this day. Indeed, it=92s one of the reasons that the lead plaintiff in the case, the late Rev. Ilsley Boone, is being memorialized with the traveling Ilsley award, which is being hosted by various AANR clubs during our year-long 75th Anniversary celebration. (For more information on Ilsley=92s latest travels, visit www.aanr.com <http://www.aanr.com/> and click =93Where=92s Ilsley.=94)
While we=92re on the subject of input from clubs, we=92d also like to thank those of you who wrote to echo Desert Fountain Inn=92s warnings about possible Internet scams from those booking travel with a fraudulent check while requesting a refund before the check bounces. Your messages indicated several variations on the theme, including those who overpay with a bad check and merely request a refund on the overpayment. By passing on your knowledge to your fellow club owners and officers, we 05 have spared them from falling prey.
How about you? Do you have any other tips and/or milestones for our question of the week that come to mind? We=92ll renew the question for one more week to give you time to share your thoughts with us.
Trained Consultants Program to be Launched in Early 2006
You 05 have noticed that page 3 of your December 2005 issue of The Bulletin includes a half page color advertisement from AANR seeking =93Consultants =96 Educators =96 and Facilitators=94 for a Volunteer Opportunity. That ad notes that we seek =93volunteers with experience in training and working with businesses for an exciting new project vital to the future of nudism and the Association=92s mission.=94 Requirements for the position include=85 =93current AANR membership, strong communication skills, the ability to travel, and a working knowledge of marketing concepts.=94
So just what is this exciting new project? Well, in recognition of the fact that (1) membership sales have been relatively flat for a couple of years; (2) that AANR=92s strength as a brand is its role as the credible voice of reason for nude recreation; (3) that marketing experts like the team at Yesawich, Pepperdine, Brown, and Russell suggest we leverage that strength by providing more how-to information to our clubs; and (4) that our clubs are calling for more assistance with sales and marketing resources this project answers.
On Friday, February 3, 2006 (Thursday the 2d and Saturday the 4th are for travel) AANR will bring from 12 =96 14 experienced volunteers to Orlando, Florida for intensive training on branding, closing sales, demographic trends, and promoting clubs on a very limited budget through specific PR techniques. Airfare, lodging, and meals are included as part of this intensive training.
These highly qualified volunteers (who must commit to working with at least five clubs through the spring and early summer of 2006) will in turn be available to visit and assist AANR clubs with on-site consulting sessions. Reasonable travel in 2006 will be reimbursed by the Association.
The program is made possible by generous support from the following regions:
AANR East – $15,000
AANR Northwest – $ 4,000
AANR West – $10,000
If you or someone you know would like to apply for this prestigious program, we invite you to send a resume to/or request an application from Carolyn Hawkins by e-mailing her at pubaffairs@aanr.com. We look forward to bringing valuable information and people to our clubs.
Many Thanks for your Holiday Cards and Goodies
We deeply appreciate the number of you who have sent your warm wishes during this holiday season to our headquarters in Kissimmee. We enjoy reading and receiving them from across the continent. For those of you sending food=85 maybe we won=92t be thanking you when it comes time to work off the extra pounds in January!=20
In Memory of Fred Allan
For those who wish to make donations in memory of Fred Allan, please send them to his wife Drew, or to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 12502 Pine Drive, Tampa, FL 33612.=20
Linda Berry, Director of Publications
The Bulletin
The January issue is about ready to go to press.
=20 Carolyn Hawkins, Public Relations Coordinator=20
AANR Convention
If you need room reservations for AANR=92s 75th anniversary convention at DeAnza Springs, please be sure to contact them at 619/766-4301, or 877/246-6833 to reserve your space. We expect this to be a largely attended celebration.
Council of State Governments
Steve Vickers and I had the opportunity to attend and exhibit at the Council of State Governments, (CSG) in Wilmington, Delaware. The show was very successful. We had the chance to speak to legislators, senators, as well as many others. We were asked questions about families, and it is good to have Steve there to talk about growing up at a nudist resort. We are very well accepted at this show.
There are various side trips offered to attendees, such as shopping trips, visits to museums, etc. Since next year=92s Council will be held in Phoenix, Arizona, I thought that it would be a great idea to offer a side trip to Shangri La Ranch. Surprisingly the representatives agreed. We have a year to work on putting something together, and I look forward to our participation.
I am still working toward the Montel Williams Show, but nothing definite yet.=20=20
We finalized our comments for Glamour Magazine. This will be about the growth of nude recreation and it will be in the January 2006 issue.=20
Another reminder — the nude cruise is quickly approaching. If you or your club would like club brochures displayed at the AANR table, be sure to get them to me as soon as possible. If you are going on the cruise feel free to carry them and bring them to the AANR booth. Please send them AANR, 1703 North Main Street, Kissimmee, FL 34744, Attention – Carolyn=20=20
A special thank-you is extended to Bob Erlenmeyer, AANR Trustee from FANR . Last Friday, Bob drive four hours (each way) to work the AANR table at the I-95 Welcome Center for the FLA USA Fall Festival. FLA USA provides us with a complimentary table, and we are able to pass out AANR brochures. Bob said that he greeted many of our members, and they were really excited to see AANR there.=20
Patricia Orner, Government Affairs Coordinator=20
CAT on the Prowl
Reading the Orlando Sentinel I spotted an ad with the headline =93Sunspots =96 If left untreated, can become unsightly and embarrassing.=94 Reading on and looking at my arms, I came to the conclusion that I (and many of my friends and neighbors at Cypress Cove) might in fact suffer from Tinea Versicolor so I called and spoke to nice young man named Joseph. When I told him where I live and where I work =96 he said a friend of his and his wife vacation often at Cypress Cove and have invited him and his wife to go with them. After letting me know that he was still not sure he could ever visit =96 but agreed that residents at a place like =93that=94 could easily be what they were looking for — and based on a verbal description he felt I would qualify.
My CAT whiskers were twitching as he had an appointment set to screen me as a candidate for a clinical research study being conducted in Clermont and Jacksonville, Florida. I chose Clermont. The study pays =93compensation up to $100 for time and travel and four clinic visits are required: a baseline evaluation – 14 days later revisit and obtain more cr=E8me – 14 days after that revisit and 28 days later last visit. I met with Barbara Hadley (owner of Cypress Cove) and she agreed that if the program looked to be valid =96 I should give the details to Ted (manager of Cypress Cove) and they would see if their members would be interested.=20
WHY you 05 ask were my CAT whiskers twitching? Community Awareness Team projects are those opportunities (some of which require thinking outside of the box) that will inform, educate, interest, and lure club members into becoming active. They often require that they provide an immediate source of gratification (my club really cares about my well being) or (I can take 1-4 day trips to Jacksonville and someone will pay me $25 a trip and I just might find a treatment for my sunspots). They always need someone who will be available to spot the possibilities and probably a few more to follow through on them. They will result in positive things (like GAT volunteers) or (articles in The Bulletin) or just a happy member. CAT projects are really important. Next time I will report on how this one is working out. If your club has a CAT =96 please let me know. If you want to start a CAT =96 let me know. If you want me to let you know if I come across an opportunity =96 let me know.=20
=20
