Although Tuesday election results are unofficial, it appears that Democrats made ever so slight gains in New Jersey and Virginia netting one seat in the New Jersey Assembly and two seats in the Virginia House of Delegates. Virginia Republicans still have a comfortable majority in the Virginia House of 58 R, 39 D and 3 Independents. In the New Jersey Assembly, the final number will likely be 48 D, 32 R. That is if one New Jersey Assembly Republican candidate holds on to a slim lead once officials tally all of the ballots. In Virginia, 64 of the 100 House races only had a candidate from one of the two major parties.
The big picture remains the same with Republicans controlling 20 state legislatures and Democrats running 19. Ten states have split control and the Nebraska Unicameral is nonpartisan. With Democrats holding governor's mansions in the two off-year election states, they still lag in control of governorships-28 R, 22 D. Democratic gains on Tuesday does give them the symbolic advantage of having more state legislative seats than the GOP by an infinitesimal five seat margin out of 7382.
For a complete table of state legislative party control, e-mail me at government@aanr.com.
Redistricting Changes Soundly Defeated
California and Ohio voters soundly rejected efforts to strip legislatures of their power to redistrict. In both states, voters overwhelmingly decided that they preferred redistricting be done by accountable elected officials rather than a small number of non-elected commissioners. The California proposition that would have shifted redistricting authority to a three member panel of retired judges failed 59.5% no to 40.5% yes. And in Ohio, a measure to give redistricting to an "independent" commission failed 70% no to 30% yes.
CAT on the Prowl the "
I need your club to help me identify those positive CAT projects that we do, but do not take credit for doing. Please e-mail me the CAT contact for your club as the Regional Chairs prepare their 2006 meeting schedules.
Take Pride In America (TPIA)
Go to www.TakePride.gov <http://www.takepride.gov/> and complete the brief registration form located under the "Volunteer" tab. If you have questions on TPIA – contact Kathy Pearson at AANR-East. Let Kathy know if your club has a project in 2006 planned that it can get TPIA credit. You must give 6-8 weeks notice and use the TPIA logo in your advertising of the event. AANR would like to come in the top 20 next year in total hours volunteered.

AANR Weekly Report for 11/4/2005

By admin at 10:11 am on November 5, 2005 | No comments
AANR Weekly Report for 11/4/2005
Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director
New Content on AANR.com
New material has been added this week to the AANR website, including a press release about interesting "75th Anniversary Trivia" from around the country. Did you know AANR has been serving America just about as long as the Cub Scouts of America and other prominent experienced groups? How about the price of bread in 1931 when the association that is now AANR first took root? You'll find these fast facts in the release, which is located in the Press Room section of the site.
Our Club Services area contains information about how Glen Eden is using Megan's Law available databases to improve guest comfort and security. The Cyber-Bulletin contains the latest update on Ilsley, AANR's traveling trophy to commemorate the 75th Anniversary. In Just for Fun we've added three new downloadable cartoon wallpapers with a holiday theme for your computer. Finally, don't forget to stop by AANR's message boards in the Member Benefits area. Over 2,700 of your fellow members have registered for these boards, to visit and post about a variety of topics.
Another Example of AANR Being a Credible Voice
An association's credibility is often a function of not just what it knows and does, but who it aligns itself with. This week an example of AANR aligning itself among the most credible voices within the travel industry comes from ARVC, the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds. Many AANR parks belong to that Association.
What you 05 not know is that in December, ARVC will be hosting its annual convention. Their keynote speaker will be none other than Peter Yesawich, who is a principal in Yesawich, Pepperdine, Brown and Russell–the very same YPB&R that's working for AANR. Here's what ARVC has to say about Mr. Yesawich on its website: "Mr. Yesawich is a renowned, dynamic speaker and author of the National Travel Monitor which YPBR has produced for over 12 years. He is frequently quoted in major newspapers such as USA Today and appears as an authority on travel trends and preferences in all types of media."
Open House at AANR Office
The AANR office will host an open house on Friday, November 18 from 4:30pm – 6:30pm. Please plan to attend and see the operation of the staff.
Models Needed
AANR needs models, all ages and all shapes. This is your opportunity to star in the new merchandise brochure and be featured on our web site. If you would like to start a new career as a model, we are looking for a few good volunteers to model AANR merchandise. The Publications Department will be taking photographs on Saturday following the Board Meeting, so please let Linda Berry know if you're interested: editor@aanr.com.
Trade Association for Nude Recreation Conference Slated for Caliente
November 30 – December 3, 2005
Do you have a club or nude travel related business that you'd like some fresh ideas about managing? Why not consider attending the TANR annual meeting this year at Caliente club in Pasco County, Florida. Special room rates are available to those who book travel early. Conference fee is $275 with additional savings of $75 or more available to multiple attendees from the same business and TANR member businesses.
AANR works cooperatively with the businesses of TANR to encourage growth of nude travel among professionals. For more information on registering for this conference, contact the AANR office at 1-800-TRY-NUDE and ask to speak with Carol Burgos.
Linda Berry, Director of Publications
The Bulletin
The December issue is The Year in Review, looking back over our accomplishments and challenges of 2005. The January issue will feature subtle changes to go along with the branding of AANR, the credible voice of reason for nude recreation.
Miscellaneous
The color brochure What Does AANR Do For Me? is being updated and will now be a single sheet (front and back), to save money on printing and postage. A club member recommended this change because it was increasing the club's postage when mailed with club information. Angie will work on the layout after this issue of The Bulletin has gone to the printer.
Carolyn Hawkins, Public Relations Coordinator
AANR in Print
I heard from the Montel Williams Show but with a different spin. Wreck Beach Towers Update

By admin at 10:19 am on November 2, 2005 | No comments

Subject: GVRD TO DECIDE FATE OF WRECK BEACH TOWERS
Folks,
It looks like we've gotten the message to GVRD that they need to play hardball with UBC.
This IS NOT yet a success.
We need to keep those letters coming. If you haven't written yet, please do so. If you've already written, please write again, sign those petitions.
And, if you possibly can, attend the November 25th meeting referenced below. If we slack off now, it is clear that UBC will continue to proceed with its own plans regardless of what we say. We need to continue playing hardball even more, and encourage GVRD to exercise its authority over UBC development plans.
This is a MUST DO!
Howard Williamson
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE GVRD TO DECIDE FATE OF WRECK BEACH TOWERS
November 2, 2005
The controversial plan to erect high rise towers next to clothing-optional Wreck Beach suffered another set back last week.
At its October 28, 2005 meeting, the GVRD Board of Directors unanimously passed a resolution declaring that the GVRD Board must agree to UBCs proposed development before UBC begins construction of any high-rise buildings adjacent to the popular beach.
The GVRD has regulatory and planning authority over the area known as Electoral Area A, which includes the UBC campus and the surrounding Pacific Spirit Regional Park. However, UBC seems determined to ignore both public opposition and GVRD resolutions
On October 5, 2005, UBC held a public meeting as required by GVRD, to receive public input. The meeting was well-attended, and the public response was overwhelmingly negative toward the towers. But, less than 24 hours after the meeting, UBC quietly submitted its controversial plans to its internal advisory urban design panel (AUDP) for approval, one of the last hurdles for UBC to clear before it issues itself a building permit.
Earlier this summer, the GVRD Board placed constraints on UBCs plans to build additional high-rise towers above the beach. The GVRD resolved that UBC should not construct any buildings that would be visible from low tide. But the GVRD Board also stated that it might consider allowing UBC to construct towers visible from the outer reaches of the beach if UBC could satisfy two conditions. First, UBC must demonstrate that there are no reasonable alternative sites or designs for the development, and second, UBC must prove that changing its plans to protect viewscapes from the beach would result in unreasonable hardship.
Judy Williams, Chair of the Wreck Beach Preservation Society, finds it incredible that UBC is forging ahead with its plans while apparently declining to consider alternative sites and building designs for the development.
The housing density UBC is determined to inflict on this site is too high, says Williams. She points to a study commissioned by UBC which UBC relies on to show that the development is appropriate for the site.
UBCs original study was premised on the development of an 1000-bed complex. Now UBC wants to ram hundreds more students into high-rises, using a design guaranteed to ruin the natural view of the Point Grey bluffs that are so treasured by park visitors, says Williams.
To date 45,000 persons have signed petitions and written 1,026 letters opposing the project.
On November 25, the GVRD Board will be making further recommendations to UBC re the Phase II towers. The public is welcome at 4330 Kingsway, second floor boardroom, 9 a.m..
WBPS applauds the recent GVRD resolution, which demonstrates GVRD authority to resolve planning disputes on UBC Campus and protect public interest.
Williams urges folks who have not yet written or signed the petition to do so now. Sample letters and background information on the struggle are at http://www.wreckbeach.org and any letters should be sent to judyw@wreckbeach.org.
Judy Williams- 604-856-9598 (Home)/ 604-308-6336 (Cell) judyw@wreckbeach.org James Loewen-604-689-9697
