Rooster Rock-Restful Haven-Sauvie Island August 6-7 Events Submitted by: Shirley Gauthier
How do you find the words to describe the successful weekend experienced at Rooster Rock, Restful Haven and Sauvie Island?
You don't!
You hope that the memories of all involved are remembered as great ones that participants take back and share their memories with others. It is impossible to write an article with out mentioning a small bit of history and some thanks to those that make it all happen.
Thanks to all nudists who appreciate the hours, money and time volunteers provide by paying for a membership in AANR.
Restful Haven Health Club located near North Plains, Oregon enthusiastically showed their appreciation for all volunteers advocating nudist rights at Rooster Rock and Sauvie Island. The Rooster Rock beach work party was scheduled for August 6 and Sauvie Island beach clean on August 7.
Restful Haven extended a generous invitation to all participants to stay at their resort for the evening by giving free grounds fees. In addition one couple (members of Restful Haven) donated all the food for a $4 lasagna dinner and gave 50% of the dinner money collected to the American Association for Nude Recreation – Northwest Government Affairs Team (AANR-NW GAT) the other 50% was a gift to Restful Haven Health Club.
Restful Haven's gift to participants made it convenient for those driving a long distance to participate in both Rooster Rock and Sauvie Island weekend event. Restful Haven's continued strong support for advocating nudist rights on public lands is valued and appreciated.
Thank you, Restful Haven members.
The Oregon State Parks Department at a trade show first approached AANR-NW in 2002. AANR-NW turned the adventure over to the AANR-NW GAT. We have now enjoyed a three-year working relationship with Rooster Rock State Park employees. 2002 was a great year for AANR-NW GAT as a great working relationship was formed with Volunteers of the Gorge who we have partnered with for our work at Rooster Rock State Park.
A special thanks goes out to Craig George advisor for the Volunteers of the Gorge who stepped out of the box to forge this partnership. AANR-NW officially adopted Rooster Rock State Park and Sauvie Island clothing optional beaches within the SOLV Adopt-A-River program on March 22, 2004. The Adopt-A-River program partners US Department of Interior, Oregon Fish and Wildlife, SOLV, Oregon State Marine Board and the US Army Corps of Engineers. SOLV, the largest volunteer organization in the state of Oregon, has been an invaluable resource for AANR-NW GAT in our effort at both beaches. We value our adoptions and thank SOLV for the many resources, supplies and educational materials.
AANR officially adopted Rooster Rock State Park (the entire park) through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department ADOPT-A-PARK program. We signed our adoption agreement on January 1, 2005. We now have signage at the park entrance informing visitors that AANR adopted the park.
The Oregon State Lottery provided nice reusable work gloves for our beach projects. Heavy-duty garbage bags suitable for litter pickup cost approximately 14 cents and we thank SOLV for contributing some of the bags. Thanks to the AANR member for contributing $25 dollars for bags that were purchased for this event weekend.
Thanks to every AANR-NW club and resort for your continued support in GAT that makes our beach work possible. Your support and financial contributions make it happen. The raffle prizes are always appreciated.
Fifty-four volunteers registered at Rooster Rock State Park for our 3rd annual Rooster Rock work party. Little did we know that Glenn Littrell a park employee would have a huge challenge for us!
A large section of the trail was to muddy for beach visitors to travel on to reach the beach. Glenn provided the wheel barrels, shovels and instructions and we nudists provided the labor. One volunteer "guesstimated" that we moved over 70 cubic yards of sand to fill in the trail. A trail along the bluff was widened so that the park vehicles could travel to the east end of the park. One volunteer cleared the stair steps of sand while others completed a litter pick up. It was rewarding to see beach visitors enjoying our newly repaired trail while we enjoyed out hot dog barbecue. Thanks to a Squaw Mt. Ranch volunteer for fund raising the funds that supplied hot dogs, condiments and bottles of water.
Immediately following the Rooster Rock event several formed a car convoy to Restful Haven resort where we enjoyed their generous gift of appreciation. The pool, hot tub and dinner were a nice ending to an exhausting day.
Thank you volunteers at Restful Haven.
Volunteers started arriving at Sauvie Island (clothing optional beach) around 10 am August 7. Once our canopies were set up we divided up areas of the beach to clean. Mark Nebeker of the Oregon Fish and Wildlife had asked that we try to clean a textiled area on Willow Road. Four volunteers located the area and after the shock of seeing the litter mess we attacked the litter, which made for a great before and after photo shoot. Once the litter patrols were completed left over hot dogs were barbecued and an afternoon of relaxation at the beach followed.
The Sun Lovers Under Gray Skies from the Seattle area had the most members participating of any club/resort. A family from Grants Pass, Oregon traveled the longest distance to participate.
To the volunteers who gave up their weekend, spent the gas money to drive to the beach and performed the physical work – we give a huge "Thank You".
Beach events like this one are successful because volunteers like you in addition to those who volunteer behind the scenes are committed to protecting our nudist rights on public lands.
