Naturist Action Committee At Work

By admin at 5:13 pm on February 7, 2005 | No comments
________________________________
Naturist Action Committee At Work
Submitted by: Shirley Gauthier
I have taken the following information from the NWnaturist yahoo group message board to create this posting. The Nwnaturist site is a family nudist online site moderated by Howard Williamson.
The Naturist Action Committee Board member Mark Storey, a hired lobbyist and Naturist Action Committee Area Representative Howard Williamson recently testified in opposition to Washington State House Bill 1333.
House Bill 1333 was recently introduced in Washington State. This potentially dangerous bill would expand the indecent exposure law in Washington to allow municipal courts to raise an indecent exposure offence to a felony for those people who have a previous record of indecent exposure.
Valuable testimony by Naturist Action Committee volunteers Mark Storey and Howard Williamson resulted in the Committee Chair Representative, Al O'Brien, suggesting that further work be completed on the bill. No committee vote was taken and NAC will be providing documentation to the committee so that the bill can be rewritten.
NAC asks that if you have had an experience with the existing exposure law or ordinance in Washington you contact Mark Storey. You can do so by emailing storey98@aol.com
The amazing modern world of technology brings us the ability to listen to the entire committee report and Mark Storey and Howard Williamson excellent testimony. This audio experience was not only interesting but a fine example of what one can expect when going to the capitol to voice opposition to an anti-nudity piece of legislation. The audio recording takes approximately 40 minutes and well worth your time. I urge you to listen to this audio recording and share it with others. You can do so at -http://198.239.32.151/ramgen/Archives/200502/2005020076.ra
Thank you Mark Storey, Howard Williamson and others contributors for your time, energy and personal finances you contributed to protecting our nudist rights.

A Night at the Bania

By admin at 5:09 pm on | No comments
================================ Nude Night At the Bania
By Howard Williamson (SLUGS)
The Russian "bania" is a centuries old social institution in Russia. Similar "sweat baths" in other cultures are common, such as the "hammam" in Islamic countries, the "sauna" in Scandinavian countries, and the "sweat lodge" among the American Indians. Others are often referred to such as the Roman baths, the Turkish steam room, as well as the Greeks.
The first difference I noted as I began my evening there was that the hot room was huge and was very hot. I later noted that the thermometer mounted on the wall on the third tier of benches read 216 degrees Fahrenheit – a far cry from the 165 to 180 degrees I had been used to in local saunas. The other thing I noted is that instead of having wood covering all the surfaces, only the benches were wood. There was a large brick oven in one corner – about four feet square and from floor to ceiling. It was filled with large rocks, with a large cast iron door, with open grilles at the top and bottom to let the hot air circulate throughout the room. The floor is tile. The net result is that you not only have the hot air of the sauna, but every surface is radiating heat into your body.
The result is a most pleasing soft heat that soaks into you from every direction. For those that don't want the very high heat at the top, each lower level of bench is about 10 to 15 degrees cooler, so you can easily find the degree of heat that suits you. I found that as the evening progressed I was seeking some of the lower levels.
As any good "sweat bath" facility should, Banya 5 has a cold (55 degrees F) plunge pool, and a relaxing room where you could lie down as well as a socializing room with tables and chairs. In addition, there was a salt water pool just slightly cooler than body temperature. This made a wonderful place to both begin and to cool down more slowly than the cold pool. Within the same room, there were two "industrial strength" showers with water pipes about 1-1/2 inches leading to them. The water temperature was controlled to a good shower temperature. There was also a hot tub whirlpool – although fairly small.
For those that like a true steam room, it has probably the finest steam room I've ever been in. I normally don't like steam rooms, but this one seemed somehow different. Maybe it was a high quality steam generator, maybe it was the slight hint of Eucalyptus in the steam – whatever it was, it was the most comfortable and pleasurable steam room I've ever used.
So, let's get back to the title – Nude night at the Bania. Banya 5 reaches out to their current customer's comfort level by offering a nude night for men, a nude night for women, a family time on Sunday, and the rest of the time is Co-ed. Unfortunately, there is no Co-ed nude time. But – that was really the main reason for my visit to Banya 5, to discuss with the partner and General Manager how we might get a designated Co-ed clothing optional time slot. What I found was that he was a card-carrying TNS member, and really wanted to have such a night – if only he could get a reasonable attendance at it. I told him of the potential size of the market in this area, and that there was a pent-up demand for some sort of venue since the demise of the nude swims at the SAC in north Seattle.
So, here's the deal – he is willing to open one night a month for a co-ed clothing optional night – if he can get upwards of 20 people attending. My part is to get the word out to all the naturist and nudist clubs in Washington, Oregon, and Vancouver, B.C. to see if we can generate enough interest to get his minimum need. He is not requiring that we rent the facility, and he will be the one at risk by providing all the staff and bearing the operating costs. This is really a first in this area having a commercial establishment open up for nude use. We are only advertising to established clubs (landed and travel – as well as at-large TNS and AANR members) – and not advertising to the general public. We feel that this will provide us a wonderful opportunity to develop a monthly nude activity.
Details – The first target night is Monday, March 28, 2005 from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm. I know – Monday night isn't the most convenient, but they are normally closed Monday, and this way he doesn't impact his normal schedule or his regular customer base. This is an authentic Russian bania – a high quality experience in a first class facility. As such, it comes at a price – $25.00 – so we need to have some commitment of about 20 people who will come to this first event. Please email me at banya5night@slimetrail.org with your commitment to attend the March 28th event. Or, if you don't have email, please mail me at 1911 SW Campus Drive, #203, Federal Way, WA 98023, but please don't just say "I'm interested" – we need a commitment on your part to make this work. If we don't have a sufficient number, it won't happen. I think once you try out the whole package, you'll be very pleasantly surprised and hopefully want to continue it. Ideally it would be available monthly, but maybe it would be best to be done a couple times a year. These are all things we can work out – but give it a try this first time, and let's see if we can't get this to be a regular event. [End]

Texas HB 772 – Prohibit Youth Camps

By admin at 8:24 am on | No comments

From Alonzo Stevens Subject: Texas HB 772 – Prohibit Nude Youth Camps
Dear AANR Members and friends:
February 2, 2005, Delegate Bryan Hughes of the Texas Legislature introduced HB 772 to prohibit nude youth camps in Texas. Specifically, the bill states that "A youth camp 05 not operate as a nudist camp. The executive commissioner of the Health and Human Services Commission by rule shall adopt the standards necessary to implement this section."
Two years you 05 remember that Representative Hughes introduced the same bill under a different number. That bill was stopped in committee, in large part because it had been introduced during a special session of the legislature.
AANR, the SWSA Region, and the Naturist Action Committee are currently conducting research to assess the bill prospects and plan our defense. We are not asking you to take any action at this time but to be ready to do so if it is appropriate. We will keep you apprised of developments as they unfold.
We appreciate all you do to help us protect nude recreation in North America.

AANR Weekly Report for 02 4, 2005

By admin at 12:16 pm on February 5, 2005 | No comments

Edited by Mel Kanner AANR Trustee
________________________________
AANR Weekly Report for 02 4, 2005
From the desk of Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director: Execdir@aanr.com <mailto:Execdir@aanr.com>
Victory in Virginia – UPDATE: HB 2806 TABLED BY FULL COMMITTEE as of Tuesday, February 1, 2005
On Tuesday morning, the Virginia House General Laws Committee voted to table HB 2806. This kills the bill for this year.
However, the bill's sponsor, Delegate Charles Carrico (R-Galax) has stated that he will re-introduce the bill next year. In politics, like sports, the best defense is a strong offense. After this General Assembly session is over, we urge all Virginians to actively work to educate our elected lawmakers on what nude recreation is all about. We need to dispel the myths with factual information.
We thank AANR and AANR-East for all their support and help in defeating this bill that would had effectively banned children from attending any nudist facility or activity in Virginia, with or without their parents. AANR and AANR-East provided the funding for this fight against HB 2806, which enabled us to hire one of the finest most effective lobbyists in Virginia. If not already a member, we strongly encourage you to join AANR. AANR and AANR-East are strong proponents and defenders of your and your family's right to participate in social nude recreation. These efforts do require major expenditures of funds, the primary source of these monies being member dues.
We also thank all of you for helping us achieve this victory, especially the restraint you showed in refraining from contacting Virginia legislators and the media.
Working in conjunction with our Virginia lobbyist, we are organizing a family Open House specifically for elected officials from throughout Virginia. We'll publicly invite them to attend through the media and personal invitation. We'll be asking AANR youth to host a question and answer session with the lawmakers. We will be asking you at a later date for your help in our educational efforts.
As always, we'll continue to alert to any future threats to your right to enjoy nude recreation.
Bob Roche
White Tail Park
Texas Threat – We no sooner were getting the good news in Virginia when some bad news from Texas came in. There, Representative Bryan Hughes (R Minneola) is proposing the same bill to ban youth camps that he offered in the summer of 2003. It is not uncommon for a story to run on such a website and then have journalists from other media outlets expand or follow up on the idea in their columns or broadcasts. These websites can spawn additional publicity that might not have originally taken place."
Just an early reminder that Nude Recreation Week will be celebrated July 4 – 10, 2005. We now look to support Bob Roche and our Virginia lobbyist as they work on youth forums with lawmakers. Education before this legislation is introduced next year as threatened is a powerful tool.
The youth camp fight now moves to Texas where HB772 looks to have "NUDIST YOUTH CAMPS PROHIBITED". As in VA we need to be certain that all requests for media interviews on this are handled VERY VERY carefully. If you must speak to someone – get their contact information and simply and friendly advise them that AANR is aware of the bill and that you will have Carolyn Hawkins get back to them. Call your AANR staff immediately and let's give those who are working to crush this as easily as we did in VA, the best chance for success. Get your GA volunteer lists with email addresses to me ASAP – so if we need to spring into action we can alert the troops. Have them watch the web site Government Affairs page and the Yahoo.com Chat room for status reports.
It's easy to have faith in yourself and have discipline when you're a winner,
when you're number one.
What you got to have is faith and discipline when you're not a winner.
Vince Lombardi
