Barnes & Noble Ban on N Magazine

By admin at 3:47 pm on November 29, 2004 | No comments

——=_NextPart_000_000F_01C4D633.23B86620 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
FROM: alonzo_stevens@mindspring.com DATE:29/11/2004 02:37:52 SUBJECT: Barnes & Noble Ban on Nude & Natural Magazine
It has come to AANR's attention that Barnes & Noble, Inc, one of this nation's largest book retail stores, has found it necessary to pull all Nude & Natural magazines from their shelves. The Nude & Natural magazine is published by The Naturist Society and is an important outreach to non-nudist and nudist as well. While Barnes & Noble will continue to sell Playboy and Penthouse, I tend to feel that we are being discriminated against because we chose to be photographed nude and without sexual content.
After some preliminary research on the web, it seems that Barnes & Noble has been involved in two indictments with authors in the past, such as Jock Sturges. These cases in the late 1990's, were regarding nude photography of families, children and others with full permission and consent. The earlier indictment of Barnes & Noble in Tennessee was based on the idea that nudity was per se as "harmful to children"; the thought was that trauma might be inflicted if a person under the age of 18 might see a naked body such as depicted in one of Sturges' books. In Alabama, the threat was even more dangerous, the books themselves were "child pornography". They are not, of course, and were upheld in a U.S. court in the 1990's.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TODAY? Nudist publications seem to be singled out in this incidence. Does this seem similar to the Virginia youth camps measure — an effort to see how far the courts and/or the public will support censorship? Our rights are being challenged and we need to respond as decent, honest, hard-working Americans.
WHAT YOU CAN DO? In coalition with the Naturist Action Committee, AANR is requesting that you write the Chief Executive Officer of Barnes & Noble at the following address:
Mr. Steve Riggio CEO of Barnes & Noble, Inc. 122 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10011
WHO SHOULD WRITE? All nudists who enjoy their freedom to practice nude recreation, in appropriate settings.
GUIDELINES: 1. Do not send anonymous letters, use your true name and address. 2. Using your own words is most effective. 3. State that Barnes & Noble's decision is unfair and discriminatory. 4. If it's about nudity, why do they continue to sell Playboy and Penthouse? 5. Request that Nude & Natural, H&E Natural and Travel Naturally be returned to the newsstand shelves. 6. Ask them to explain why they made this decision to pull these publications.
TIPS AND HINTS: 1. Visit your local Barnes & Noble and ask these questions personally.
NEXT STEPS? AANR Government Affairs and Public Relations program directors are conferring with the AANR Office and Officers to investigate our next steps. We appreciate your concern and involvement and will keep you informed in this newsgroup.

——=_NextPart_000_000F_01C4D633.23B86620 Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; charset=3Dus-ascii"> <META content=3D"MSHTML 6.00.2900.2523" name=3DGENERATOR></HEAD> <BODY><FONT face=3Darial,helvetica><FONT lang=3D0 face=3DArial size=3D2=20 FAMILY=3D"SANSSERIF" PTSIZE=3D"10">FROM: alonzo_stevens@mindspring.com <BR>= DATE:=20 Mon, 29/11/2004 02:37:52 <BR>SUBJECT: Barnes &amp; Noble Ban on Nude= =20 &amp; Natural Magazine <BR><BR>It has come to AANR's attention that Barnes = &amp;=20 Noble, Inc, one of <BR>this nation's largest book retail stores, has found = it=20 necessary to <BR>pull all Nude &amp; Natural magazines from their shelves.&= nbsp;=20 The Nude &amp; <BR>Natural magazine is published by The Naturist Society an= d is=20 an <BR>important outreach to non-nudist and nudist as well.&nbsp; While Bar= nes=20 &amp; <BR>Noble will continue to sell Playboy and Penthouse, I tend to feel= =20 <BR>that we are being discriminated against because we chose to be=20 <BR>photographed nude and without sexual content.<BR><BR>After some prelimi= nary=20 research on the web, it seems that Barnes &amp; <BR>Noble has been involved= in=20 two indictments with authors in the past, <BR>such as Jock Sturges. AANR Weekly Report for Nov. 24, 2004

By admin at 1:57 pm on November 24, 2004 | No comments

Edited by=20 Mel Kanner AANR Trustee ———————————————————— ——————————–
AANR Weekly Report for Nov. 24, 2004=20=20=20=20 =20=20=20
From the desk of Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director: Execdir@aanr.com Best Wishes Please accept our very best wishes for a warm, and safe, Thanksgiving holiday.=20=20 As a reminder, the office will be closed on Thursday and Friday in observance of the occasion.
Thanks for a great board meeting! I=92d like to thank this opportunity to thank the volunteers, AANR officers, and Trustees, as well as our regional presidents, Dean, Barbara, and Ted Hadley and the staff of Cypress Cove, and AANR=92s staff for making a great fall meeting of the Board possible.
2004 TANR (Trade Association for Nude Recreation) Conference, 12 1-4, Harrah=92s Las Vegas. Please call the AANR office to make your reservations for the conference. This is an excellent conference for businesses involved in nude recreation. Georgie & I will be attending and look forward to seeing many of you in Las Vegas.
Water Cooler topic: Is the art world turning upside down? In performing a routine search about what=92s happening in the news media we came across two very recent stories about nudity in the art world.
First, there was some relatively good news when a television anchorwoman went nude =93in the name of art=94 while covering a story about famed photographer Spencer Tunick. You can read more about it here: http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_np=3D0&u_pg=3D1640&u_sid=3D126649 8
On the other hand, a story also ran about a Nebraska school that censored a painting from an art exhibit over relatively innocuous, =93distant=94 nudity in one painting:=20 http://www.canada.com/news/oddities/story.html?id=3De81600ac-e 897-4f94-b6e5-e4079de92b84=20
Why bring this up? Because in interviewing artists for an upcoming story in The Bulletin about a nude art show to be held at Cypress Cove December 11 – 12, those interviews revealed what 05 be a disturbing trend: fewer and fewer art galleries, shows, and exhibitions are allowing nudity. To these artists, nude art shows are more important than ever because, without them, there would be few if any opportunities to display and sell works.
We=92d like to hear from you about whether you=92ve seen more promising developments or disturbing ones. Is the art world, long a safe bastion for the human body, becoming off limits too? Tell us!
Wreck Beach Reminder Reminder: please visit the Wreck Beach Preservation Society=92s site www.wreckbeach.org and sign their online petition. There=92s recent evidence that the group is making progress but they need our support.
———————————————————— ——————————– From the desk of Pat Plumstead, Executive Assistant: ExOffice@aanr.com
Glenn Miller Fund deadline is 12 1, 2004. Interest free $5,000.00 max loans are awarded to clubs. An application can be obtained from the AANR office or from the official AANR forms on www.aanr.com. AANR Weekly Report for Nov. 12, 2004

By admin at 10:34 am on November 12, 2004 | No comments

Edited by Mel Kanner AANR-NW Trustee
Next week I will be at the AANR Trustee Board meeting in Kissimmee, FL and so will many of the AANR staff. ———————————————————— ——————-
AANR Weekly Report for Nov. 12, 2004
Dedicated to the veterans of the United States and Canada who gave the ultimate sacrifice
From the desk of Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director: Execdir@aanr.com
I look forward to seeing many of you next week for AANR's fall meeting of the Board of Trustees.
FANR at Flapjack Festival – Last weekend I had the pleasure of joining Trustees Bob Erlenmeyer and Elf Anderson of FANR in working the region's booth at Pasco County's flapjack festival. We distributed literature, pins, and other give-a ways to visitors. It's evident that many people know about our clubs in this county and have a favorable impression of them. It's also evident that there's a strong spirit of cooperation with law enforcement. (In fact, sheriff deputies could not have been more helpful with helping me to find parking when they saw the AANR magnets on my van!) Finally, there's considerable interest in nude recreation as a subject as reflected in comments from both guests and volunteers working the festival.
I'd like to thank Bob for working the entire weekend on behalf of AANR / FANR and for inviting me to attend. I also appreciate Elf for introducing me to numerous decision-makers from the Pasco Chamber of Commerce and the tourist development council. You're proof that we're accomplishing the mission of protecting and promoting nude recreation.
Also in the good news department while at the festival, I had an opportunity to speak with Li Bailey, who many of you 05 recall served as our association's secretary / treasurer for several years along with her husband / trustee, Trevor. I'm happy to report to you that they're doing well. Recently they have been taking extensive training as part of their work with a community based non-profit group. That's 12 sharp!
It's a great opportunity to gather a group, car pool to the Columbia Gorge and support the clothing optional beach at (http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_175.php) Rooster Rock. Restful Haven Health Club www.cybernude.com/restful has provided a great mascot for the Polar Dip. Come join us for a group photo with the mascot!
Last year Mike Parker, Ron Coyle, Mark Buchweitz, Kevin Lough and Shirley Gauthier braved the elements to enter the mighty Columbia. Bob Burns showed up late and cheered for us. For reasons only they know someone else will be in charge of making a large sign for the photo shoot. In looking back at the Polar Dip photo taken Feb. 7, I noticed snow on the mountains in the background. This year's dip is one week earlier so hopefully the wind the Gorge is so proud of will be kind to us.
Anyone have a suggestion for a place to gather for coffee or food after the dip?
Now those of you who do not live close enough or are not brave enough are probably asking yourself "How can I participate if I can't be there or simply not brave enough?" Listed below are ways you to can participate without getting wet.
1. Show up and be a cheerleader. Offer a pep talk. Take the group photo. Bring the sign. 2. Purchase a raffle ticket for Henry Yuen fundraiser. Simply make out a check for $5 (each $5 is one entry) to AANR-NW GAT and mail it to Shirley Gauthier, Willamettans, PO Box 969, Marcola, Oregon 97454. Donated funds are used to promote, preserve and protect nudist rights in the Northwest.

AANR Weekly Report for 11 5, 2004

By admin at 1:41 pm on November 5, 2004 | No comments

Edited by Mel Kanner AANR-NW Trustee ———————————————————— —————————– AANR Weekly Report for Nov. 5, 2004
From the desk of Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director: Execdir@aanr.com
Last week the WB Network aired an episode of the sitcom "What I Like About You." In the episode two young women travel to a resort believing it's a "dude ranch" when it turns out to be a "nude ranch." Skeptical at first, the two women give nude recreation a try! At the end of the episode, one of the character's notes, "you seem so relaxed" to which the other character replies, "once you've freed [your body] I guess the rest comes naturally." This shows how our education efforts are paying off.
We prepared a letter to the WB Network praising them for this positive portrayal of nude recreation and inviting them to run a free ad for the show in The Bulletin. An excerpt from the letter follows: Recently, more than ever before, the business community has recognized just how many people enjoy getting a little more sunshine.and the dollar value of serving those people. For example, The Wall St. Journal carried a full page article about how clothing-optional resorts are catering to an affluent au naturel crowd. USA Today, Forbes, and CNN / Money have echoed those sentiments noting that nude recreation is now a $400 million industry. Moreover, recent results from the National Leisure Travel Monitor poll show that about 18% of all traveling Americans would like to incorporate a clothing optional experience into their travel plans. So please let me renew my thanks for WB Network's positive portrayals of our favorite pastime.
Below is a link to the WB Network.: <a href=http://www.thewb.com/Shows/Episode/0
