Edited by Mel Kanner AANR-NW Trustee ———————————————————— —————————
AANR Weekly Report for October 15, 2004
From the desk of Erich Schuttauf, Executive Director: Execdir@aanr.com <mailto:Execdir@aanr.com>
International Naturist Federation Passes Resolution Denouncing Virginia House Bill 158
As you know, a portion of your membership dues helps fund AANR presence in the International Naturist Federation—a veritable "United Nations" of countries who, collectively, support nudism and naturism all over the world. Automatic membership in this organization is reflected with the INF seal on your membership card, which entitles you to discounts when visiting clubs and resorts abroad.
Recently, Dean Hadley of Cypress Cove—AANR's delegate to the Federation—returned from attending the bi-annual World Congress at Valalta Resort in Croatia (http://www.valalta.hr/ <http://www.valalta.hr/> ). He brought with him a resolution signed by over 30 officials, representing twenty one countries as well as key committees like INF Youth and INF Europe, which denounces Virginia's HB 158 and urges its "repeal as soon as possible."
The Resolution noted that in prohibiting the operation of camps for young naturists unless a parent attends, HB 158 is "completely contrary to the INF's recognition of the human right to functional nudity in natural surroundings.for all persons provided that it takes place in appropriate settings."
This resolution 05 well come in handy as AANR and AANR East pursue channels to challenge this law. Many thanks to Dean and to the Federation for assisting with this strong show of support.
AANR Responds to Story of "The Streaking Congressman"
This week countless newspapers and media outlets carried the story of a tightly contested Congressional race in Texas that 05 be impacted by reports that four term Republican Congressman Pete Sessions took part in a college streaking event about 30 years ago! Challenger Rep. Martin Frost, also a longtime Congressman who's opposing Sessions after state re-districting altered his constituency. Frost's camp reportedly noted that "Sessions exposed himself to children and strangers" albeit with about 200 other Southwest Texas State University students back in 1974 and that it was therefore hypocritical for Sessions to have publicly condemned the Janet Jackson incident during last year's Super Bowl. You can read one version of the story from the Houston Chronicle here: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/284251 7 <http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/28425 17>
Believing that the story presented an opportunity to discuss our position on nude recreation with the Bureau Chief who prepared the piece, our office mailed the following letter along with copies of a "Nude 5k Run" release and AANR Press Kit. We view this as a natural extension of our mission and appreciate all the work that you our clubs and volunteers do to help us advance that mission.

October 14, 2004
Thomas Korosec
Bureau Chief Houston Chronicle 400 S Record St Ste 850 Dallas, TX 75202-4884
Re: '1974 Streakin Pete story provokes more attacks' article online at Houston Chronicle.com.
Dear Mr. Korosec,
As Executive Director of the American Association for Nude Recreation, I appreciate this opportunity to comment on the above-referenced article.
With roots dating to 1931, our Association has grown to represent nearly 50,000 members and their families throughout North America who enjoy recreation and relaxation au naturel within appropriate settings. With these many years of experience, those in the Association recognize that a good sense of humor is helpful when initiating a dialog on the subject of what we do.
I appreciated the sense of levity that your article brings to a tense time when elections at the presidential, congressional, and local level have our nation at a crossroads. While enjoying your piece, it occurred to me that the story about Representative Sessions could also present a useful backdrop for explaining the popularity of nude recreation and dispelling a few misconceptions about it.
First, anyone who has given clothes-freedom a try at one of our 270 clubs and resorts—or any one of the 54 million plus people who've gone skinny-dipping according to a Roper poll—would echo Mr. Sessions' comments to the San Antonio News back in 1974: "Just taking off your clothes and running around is kind of a free spirit thing." Shedding your clothes can be a very natural, freeing, experience and it is fun and enjoyable. That's what so many have found when they try a vacation with us, where they pack a little less and relax a little more. The enclosed article from The Wall St. Journal notes just how many people go clothes-free and the $400 million scope of our industry.
Second, what sets our favorite form of recreation apart from Janet Jackson's Super Bowl halftime episode or a college streak is that our members practice it within appropriate settings. These range from AANR clubs, to our families' fenced back yards and private
swimming pools, to recognized nude beaches. Such places and circumstances make our nudity unlikely to be viewed by others who would be offended or uncomfortable.
Third, although we believe it's important to disrobe only in appropriate settings to avoid offending others, we trust you'll agree that the "explosive" reaction to the Jackson and Sessions stories are evidence that too few people are comfortable with the human body.
Finally, to those who would like to try running in the nude (or try it again) we offer a creative alternative. The enclosed press release about our nude racing series of events held throughout many states of the Southwest 05 be just the thing for experiencing exercise "on the light side." Our Association headquarters in Kissimmee, Florida would be happy to provide additional information about this series or answer any additional questions you 05 have.
Please feel free to telephone the office toll-free at 1-800-TRY-NUDE or e-mail clubinfo@aanr.com <mailto:clubinfo@aanr.com> .
