Terrific Concert at Sun Meadow Resort!

By admin at 10:18 am on October 31, 2004 | No comments
November 13th is going to be a special day. Sun Meadow Productions presents Canadian Folk icon James Gordon to the resort for a live after dinner show! Tickets are available from Sun Meadow office for $8. Here's a recent write up on James to wet your musical appetite! Plugged In by: MIKE BEGGS of the Brampton Guardian.com
If there is a latter day Canadian folk icon, James Gordon just 05 be it.
The Guelph, Ontario-based singer/songwriter/guitarist has released more than 30 albums between his time with the respected band Tamarack, and his more recent solo works, while becoming a familiar figure on CBC-Radio shows like Basic Black. [At Sun Meadow he will sing solo and accompany himself on guitar and banjo.]
Indeed, his song Frobisher Bay was named Favorite Canadian Roots Song in a recent CBC Radio contest.
Gordon's latest CD Endomusia (on Borealis Records) has earned his best Stateside airplay to date, cracking the Top 30 on U.S. folk radio. Based way in the folk tradition, it includes a tribute to child murder victim Randal Dooley, a gutbusting protest song againt the new smoking regulations, and tales of his own life in on the road in Impossible Disguise.
He's just off a trip to the Maritimes, where he was teaching songwriting in the schools. He works with every class on a different theme, and at the end an album is recorded. In this way, some of the area's history is recaptured.
Gordon did much the same thing for years with Tamarack, researching about the towns they passed through.
"It's kind of a neat thing to immerse yourself in a community for a while," he said. "I've grown to learn there's a need out there for people to learn about themselves, and their identity. It's a thrill for me."
Gordon is among those Canadian acts bent on boosting the nation's fragile self-image.
"We're so overwhelmed by U.S. culture," he said. "I tour a lot in in the U.S. and they say, "You sound so Canadian". They see it, we don't."
Much as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, he grew up on the music of stellar Ontario songwriters like Willie P. Bennett, and David Essig.
"They took what came before, and carved out their own niche in Canadian music," he said. "The fact you can have a regional sound of international interest is what I've always strived for."
More recently, Gordon has found himself, "wanting to work on a bigger canvas." Among other side projects, he penned the folk opera Hardscrabble Road, and has three other pieces of musical theatre on the go (including one in Tunbridge On Wells, England).
In the past year, he also released the CD, The Song The River Sings commissioned by the Canadian Heritage River Society.
"I've always written songs for rivers," he said. "I (was given) 12 Canadian rivers to focus upon."

AANR-NW Government Affairs Team (GAT) Fundraiser

By admin at 6:57 am on October 25, 2004 | No comments

AANR-NW Government Affairs Team (GAT) Fundraiser Submitted by: Shirley Gauthier
The first online AANR-NW GAT fundraiser made possible by Henry Yuen's donation of a watercolor painting raised over $600.
Henry Yuen sketches everyday scenes of people at work and play and translates his sketches in watercolor paintings, stenciled or pochoir prints and silk-screened prints. His naturist art has been published three times on the cover of N magazine and shown in a Danish exhibition. Henry has been generous in donating art in the past to promote, protect and preserve nudist rights. Check out http://www.hevanet.com/hjlyuen/
Henry has once again donated a beautiful painting to GAT. At the AANR-NW Fall Board meeting held at Fraternity Snoqualmie it was decided this beautiful painting would become our first traveling fundraiser. We named the painting "The Henry" and Sharon McLeod volunteered to take "The Henry" on its first leg of its journey. The final destination and drawing for the lucky winner will be the AANR-NW convention, July 1-4, 2005 at Restful Haven near North Plains, Oregon.
Cost per entry is $5 and no limit to the number of times you can enter. You can support AANR-NW GAT and enter to win the painting by sending a check with your name and address on it to-
AANR-NW GAT Chair-Shirley Gauthier The Willamettans PO Box 969 Marcola, Oregon 97454
If you prefer to have your contribution designated to a certain GAT project you can do so. Simply add a note with your check. An example would be one of the following-
. Preservation of Wreck Beach . Rooster Rock annual beach party (First Saturday in August) . Rooster Rock "Down by the Riverside" SOLV event (May 21st) . Sauvie Island beach cleanup
AANR-NW GAT thanks you for your past support in time, energy and finances. You make it happen!

Automatic membership in this organization is reflected with the INF seal on your membership card, which entitles you to discounts when visiting clubs and resorts abroad.
Recently, Dean Hadley of Cypress Cove—AANR's delegate to the Federation—returned from attending the bi-annual World Congress at Valalta Resort in Croatia (http://www.valalta.hr/ <http://www.valalta.hr/> ). He brought with him a resolution signed by over 30 officials, representing twenty one countries as well as key committees like INF Youth and INF Europe, which denounces Virginia's HB 158 and urges its "repeal as soon as possible."
The Resolution noted that in prohibiting the operation of camps for young naturists unless a parent attends, HB 158 is "completely contrary to the INF's recognition of the human right to functional nudity in natural surroundings.for all persons provided that it takes place in appropriate settings."
This resolution 05 well come in handy as AANR and AANR East pursue channels to challenge this law. Many thanks to Dean and to the Federation for assisting with this strong show of support.
AANR Responds to Story of "The Streaking Congressman"
This week countless newspapers and media outlets carried the story of a tightly contested Congressional race in Texas that 05 be impacted by reports that four term Republican Congressman Pete Sessions took part in a college streaking event about 30 years ago! Challenger Rep. Martin Frost, also a longtime Congressman who's opposing Sessions after state re-districting altered his constituency. Frost's camp reportedly noted that "Sessions exposed himself to children and strangers" albeit with about 200 other Southwest Texas State University students back in 1974 and that it was therefore hypocritical for Sessions to have publicly condemned the Janet Jackson incident during last year's Super Bowl. You can read one version of the story from the Houston Chronicle here: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/284251 7 <http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/28425 17>
Believing that the story presented an opportunity to discuss our position on nude recreation with the Bureau Chief who prepared the piece, our office mailed the following letter along with copies of a "Nude 5k Run" release and AANR Press Kit. We view this as a natural extension of our mission and appreciate all the work that you our clubs and volunteers do to help us advance that mission.

October 14, 2004
Thomas Korosec
Bureau Chief Houston Chronicle 400 S Record St Ste 850 Dallas, TX 75202-4884
Re: '1974 Streakin Pete story provokes more attacks' article online at Houston Chronicle.com.
Dear Mr. Korosec,
As Executive Director of the American Association for Nude Recreation, I appreciate this opportunity to comment on the above-referenced article.
With roots dating to 1931, our Association has grown to represent nearly 50,000 members and their families throughout North America who enjoy recreation and relaxation au naturel within appropriate settings. With these many years of experience, those in the Association recognize that a good sense of humor is helpful when initiating a dialog on the subject of what we do.
I appreciated the sense of levity that your article brings to a tense time when elections at the presidential, congressional, and local level have our nation at a crossroads. While enjoying your piece, it occurred to me that the story about Representative Sessions could also present a useful backdrop for explaining the popularity of nude recreation and dispelling a few misconceptions about it.
First, anyone who has given clothes-freedom a try at one of our 270 clubs and resorts—or any one of the 54 million plus people who've gone skinny-dipping according to a Roper poll—would echo Mr. Sessions' comments to the San Antonio News back in 1974: "Just taking off your clothes and running around is kind of a free spirit thing." Shedding your clothes can be a very natural, freeing, experience and it is fun and enjoyable. That's what so many have found when they try a vacation with us, where they pack a little less and relax a little more. The enclosed article from The Wall St. Journal notes just how many people go clothes-free and the $400 million scope of our industry.
Second, what sets our favorite form of recreation apart from Janet Jackson's Super Bowl halftime episode or a college streak is that our members practice it within appropriate settings. These range from AANR clubs, to our families' fenced back yards and private
swimming pools, to recognized nude beaches. Such places and circumstances make our nudity unlikely to be viewed by others who would be offended or uncomfortable.
Third, although we believe it's important to disrobe only in appropriate settings to avoid offending others, we trust you'll agree that the "explosive" reaction to the Jackson and Sessions stories are evidence that too few people are comfortable with the human body.
Finally, to those who would like to try running in the nude (or try it again) we offer a creative alternative. The enclosed press release about our nude racing series of events held throughout many states of the Southwest 05 be just the thing for experiencing exercise "on the light side." Our Association headquarters in Kissimmee, Florida would be happy to provide additional information about this series or answer any additional questions you 05 have.
Please feel free to telephone the office toll-free at 1-800-TRY-NUDE or e-mail clubinfo@aanr.com <mailto:clubinfo@aanr.com> . The Streaking Texas Congressman

By admin at 9:51 pm on October 15, 2004 | No comments

AANR AANR Responds to Story of "The Streaking Congressman"
{Taken from the weekly AANR report}
You can read one version of the story from the Houston Chronicle here:
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/metropolitan/2842517
See the rest of the story with this week's upcoming AANR weekly newsletter. -pt

Wreck Beach Alert

By admin at 7:17 pm on October 6, 2004 | No comments

——=_NextPart_000_000A_01C4ABE9.F20833D0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
I just received an email from Judy Williams thanking AANR-NW for our financial contribution to the legal struggle pertaining to Wreck Beach. In addition to the financial help Judy asked if we could forward the NAC alert to our members. Please post the attached which I have cut and pasted from her NAC alert information.
Shirley Gauthier

AANR-NW Government Affairs Team (GAT) solicits your support.
Submitted by: Shirley Gauthier AANR-NW GAT Chair

At the AANR-NW Fall Board meeting held at Fraternity Snoqualmie October 2, we voted to contribute $500 the Wreck Beach Preservation Society legal defense fund.

Judy Williams wrote expressing appreciation for our financial contribution. In addition to financial help she asks for our immediate help with the following. Judy asked that I forward the NAC alert. I have cut and pasted the following. We thank Judy and NAC for their work to encourage our membership to help and support.

The threat to the character and possible future existence of Wreck Beach
has reached a point of crisis. In close cooperation with the Wreck Beach
Preservation Society (WBPS), the Naturist Action Committee (NAC) is
requesting your immediate participation in a grass roots battle to
preserve Wreck Beach.

NAC is asking you to send e-mail and postal correspondence to regional
authorities who control the fate of Wreck Beach. Read on for details.

BACKGROUND

Wreck Beach in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, is one of the most beautiful
clothing-optional beaches in the world. It wraps nearly 8 km. around the
Point Grey peninsula and is framed by spectacular forested cliffs. Above
those cliffs lies the campus of the University of British Columbia (UBC).

Presently the pristine forested cliffs above the beach hide any
university buildings from view, giving beachgoers a natural backdrop that
approaches wilderness, despite close proximity to the city. This precious
heritage view greeted Captain George Vancouver centuries ago and is still
enjoyed by boaters and people who visit the tidal flats today.

For years, UBC campus development has threatened the natural character of
the adjacent foreshore and cliffs. But this year University officials
literally went "over the top" when they began construction of the first
of four intended 20-story Marine Residence student towers, only hundreds
of feet from the cliff edge, overlooking the most popular area of the
beach.
Started with virtually no public consultation, the construction planning
has triggered a public outcry, with the WBPS pointing to specific
environmental impacts. Those include:

1) inevitable bird strikes on tall buildings
2) the potential for cliff erosion and the beach-threatening
solutions that will surely be proposed to protect the new
construction from the effect of such erosion.

More than any other issue, the potential loss of the wilderness-like
setting has captured the attention of naturists and nature lovers from
around the world. Simply put, the construction of towers looming over the
beach would forever change the character of Wreck Beach.

The Wreck Beach Preservation Society is asking the official stewards of
the beach, the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) and other
regional authorities to protect the public park from this irreparable
loss. The concerns of the Wreck Beach Preservation Society are shared by
many. As this NAC Action Alert is being released, nearly 20,000 petition
signatures have been collected as validation of the WBPS position.

NAC ASKS ALL CONCERNED INDIVIDUALS TO CONTACT THE FOLLOWING AUTHORITIES

Send correspondence to as many as possible. Anonymous
correspondence is typically ignored. Be polite. Carefully express your
outrage and your resentment, if you wish, but avoid threats and
name-calling.

In your message, state very clearly that you OPPOSE the proposed towers,
as well as the height of the first tower now under construction.

SOME POINTS TO CONSIDER

Please use your own words. You 05 simply and respectfully ask
decision-makers to consider the requests of the Wreck Beach Preservation
Society, or you 05 elaborate on any of the following points

1) The need to protect the environment from irreparable harm
has been inadequately addressed. Those rushing the construction
of the towers have brushed off concerns about cliff stability and
such environmental concerns as eagle habitat.

2) Geotechnical and environmental studies have been released to the
GVRD, but UBC has withheld those studies from the public. The University
MUST make all of this information available to the Wreck Beach
Preservation Society and to the public. What legitimate purpose is
served by hiding the studies?

3) GVRD, entrusted with stewardship of Wreck Beach, must be encouraged
to continue its efforts to prevent the loss of one of Vancouver's most
beautiful and unspoiled viewscapes of forested cliffs by the sea.

4) Months ago, WBPS raised a small blimp to the height of the 20-storey
buildings and demonstrated that the towers would hulk quite visibly
above the tree line. UBC refused to accept that result, but now will allow
no one else to prove or disprove it, although they claim their blimp raised
in June was not visible from the beach. If University officials believe the
Wreck Beach Preservation Society is mistaken about the overshadowing
profiles of the towers to be imposed on the beach, then those University
officials should be happy to have WBPS proven wrong! UBC MUST allow
GVRD staff to raise an impartial blimp to the 20-storey height within the
footprint for each site of the three remaining proposed towers.

5) There is an unaddressed need for storm water management to avoid cliff erosion.

6) There is a desperate need for a full, transparent public process
regarding the design and heights of the three remaining towers, as
well as the height of Tower #1 now under construction. The University
MUST immediately become the good neighbor it has claimed to be.

Judy Williams
Board Member-Naturist Action Committee

If you would like to contribute to the Wreck Beach Preservation Society's effort to preserve Wreck Beach you can do so as an AANR member.

Simply make your personal check out to WBPS and mail it to-
AANR-NW Treasurer- Darrel Brown
PO BOX 937
Marcola, OR 97454-0937

——=_NextPart_000_000A_01C4ABE9.F20833D0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

<META http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; charset=3Dus-ascii"> <META content=3D"MSHTML 6.00.2900.2180" name=3DGENERATOR>

<FONT lang=3D0 FAMILY=3D"SANSSERIF" PTSIZE=3D"10">

I just received an email from Ju= dy=20 Williams thanking AANR-NW for our financial contribution to the legal strug= gle=20 pertaining to Wreck Beach. In addition to the financial help Judy ask= ed if=20 we could forward the NAC alert to our members. Please post the attach= ed=20 which I have cut and pasted from her NAC alert information. =20

Shirley=20 Gauthier

&nb= sp; <P class=3DMsoNormal style=3D"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><?xml:namespace prefix = =3D o ns =3D=20 "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><FONT face=3D"Times New Ro= man"=20 size=3D3>
<P class=3DMsoNormal style=3D"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=3D"Times New = Roman"=20 size=3D3>AANR-NW Government Affairs Team (GAT) solicits your support.</FONT= >
<P class=3DMsoNormal style=3D"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=3D"Times New = Roman"=20 size=3D3>Submitted by: Shirley Gauthier AANR-NW GAT Chair
<P class=3DMsoNormal style=3D"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=3D"Times= New Roman"=20 size=3D3>
<P class=3DMsoNormal style=3D"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=3D"Times New = Roman"=20 size=3D3>At the AANR-NW Fall Board meeting held at Fraternity Snoqualmie Oc= tober=20 2, we voted to contribute $500 the Wreck Beach Preservation Society legal=20 defense fund.
<P class=3DMsoNormal style=3D"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=3D"Times= New Roman"=20 size=3D3>
<P class=3DMsoNormal style=3D"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=3D"Times New = Roman"=20 size=3D3>Judy Williams wrote expressing appreciation for our financial=20 contribution.<SPAN style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes"> In addition to= =20 financial help she asks for our immediate help with the following.<SPAN=20 style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes"> Judy asked that I forward the NAC= =20 alert.<SPAN style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes"> I have cut and pasted= the=20 following.<SPAN style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes"> We thank Judy and= NAC=20 for their work to encourage our mem= bership=20 to help and support.
<P class=3DMsoNormal style=3D"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT face=3D"Times= New Roman"=20 size=3D3>
<P class=3DMsoNormal style=3D"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT=20 face=3D"Times New Roman">The threat to the character and possible future ex= istence=20 of <?xml:namespace prefix =3D st1 ns =3D=20 "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:place=20 w:st=3D"on"><st1:PlaceName w:st=3D"on">Wreck <st1:PlaceType= =20 w:st=3D"on">Beach
<P class=3DMsoNormal style=3D"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt"><FONT=20 face=3D"Times New Roman">has reached a point of crisis.
